I was under the impression that those that are willing to talk to foreigners want to learn English and realize that most foreigners don't care about their country outside of those that are interested in Japanese culture, since there's not much reason to care otherwise. My girlfriend is Japanese (and ~7-8 years older than me). We met through work, while she was here on a visa. We really started talking and going out after we found out we liked the same music (metal, punk, rock in general, etc. We're both huge fans of Maximum the Hormone and we both play bass guitar). Of course, since she was here on a visa, she had to go back to Japan and won't be back until the summer at least.
I planned on going to Japan this Christmas, but unfortunately one of her family members is in a coma and will most likely die within the month or so, so it would be a bad time for me to go there. I think I'll postpone it until Spring Break, though. It's nice knowing that her mother is learning English to be able to speak with me, though, so I'm really excited to go to Japan and be able to speak with her in my bad Japanese, and for her to speak with me in her bad English.
There are a lot of Japanese women online, though, I would say if you're looking for "a Japanese girlfriend" then you're probably going about it wrong. My only real advice is to try to make Japanese friends in general and explore the culture. Ask your Japanese friends to teach you about their ways of life, what they like, all of that sort of stuff. It's relatively easy to turn a good friendship into a relationship, if you're socially aware enough.
Let things happen organically, really. That's the best advice I could give.

Well that's the thing. I'm a bit of a unique looking dude myself (half middle eastern, half black, giant afro sorta hair), so I expect to get some looks wherever I go. This thread reminded me of this dumb promise I made with my best friend back in junior high. He got this urge to watch a lot of anime during vacations after I recommended him cowboy bebop and one day told me "dude we should take japanese as our third language in college and take a semester/year as exchange students in japan! I already checked and both of our universities hold an agreement with the same uni!" As we go to different universities for different reasons.
His jap classes are really killing as it's a 2-year intensive course to receive some sort of "pass" to enroll at a nip university. Meanwhile, I just take it easy doing 3 hours a week with plenty of time to continue with my other stuff.
I don't think he's really looking forward to the day we go as exchange students as he's on a point right now where he could lose his scholarship due to some projects and constant lack of time.
Do you really think it's worth the time he has sunk so far just to travel to japan as exchange students?

Not the guy you replied to but I've found about 2 dozen total Japanese friends on that website, but I stay in touch with about 6 on a regular basis. It all depends on the person and you, really. There are a lot of creeps who respond to women on japan-guide, so if you're the kinda person that immediately hits on someone in a crass manner, then you'll get a lot of blocks. It's a good way to learn Japanese and teach English though.
