I do not get it. I fail to understand where the fun comes from when playing a visual novel. I don't understand why am I just reading text on a screen. If the author wanted to release his art, couldn't he have done it in a book or an enovel. I know some visual novel games like phoenix wright if that is a visual novel have some gameplay. But why is something like this have none.
Because they want a multi media experience, they just don't have enough budget to do a full multi media experience.

I was curious about the game/novel "When they cry" because I keep seeing the characters posted here on /jp/ mainly rika and lambadelta. So I thought okay I guess I will check this out and maybe I will like it like touhou. I did not even understand, the lack of gameplay. It seemed very alien to me.

It's a novel that has visuals. Visual. Novel. Have you ever read a book? It's similar to that. It just has pictures added in.
When was the last time you read a fiction novel, OP?
It's the only medium where you can tell a long story with visuals and sound. Novels/manga don't have the latter, and anime/movies can't practically be anywhere near as long as a VN, nor do they have narration for the most part.
Though it doesn't apply to Higurashi, they can also have branching plots and sexual content. Certain types of stories can only be told as VNs. Look at Subahibi, for example; it wouldn't really work in any other format.

Basically, it's like reading a book but with visuals and sounds. Don't expect any gameplay, you should "play" a VN for the story and characters, though I wish VN in general would be more like CYOA with very frequent choices.
