They're geographically close to countries that don't speak alien meme languages, plus it's harder to get away with knowing just Finnish when there's only 5m of them (compared to like 110m Japs or whatever).

Because our languages are closer to English than yours. The reason Japanese is hard to us is the same reason English is hard to you, languages are only hard relative to a person's native language and how distinct the two are. In comparison Korean should be super easy to a Japanese person, as it employs very similar grammar and shares a lot of vocabulary by way of chinese loanwords.
