Multi-tap (once for -a, ..., five times for -o) system works best for me on phone. The main alternative is hold-and-slide (select base key, don't slide for -a, and for the others slide up, down, left or right). You can use romaji entry as well, if necessary. Can get full keyboards as well but they are cumbersome.
