Strãbunicul sãu dinspre tatã se numea Simeon Zelea, de la zale, trãgându-si probabil numele de la îmbrãcãmintea strãmosilor sãi, ostasi moldoveni, care mergeau la rãzboi îmbrãcati în zale.
În timpul ocupatiei austriece si anume în epoca posterioarã anului 1786, când Bucovina a trecut sub administratie polonezã, devenind, dupã expresiunea d-lui prof. N.Iorga, în >Histoire des Roumains de Bucovina< , pag.61 : >Un simplu district al Galitiei<, numele acesta de Zelea a fost transformat de autoritãti, în scoalã sau în armatã, în acel cu rezonantã polonezã de Zelinski.
peratia aceasta de polonizare a numelor moldovenesti era, de altfel, generalã în acea epocã în Bucovina. Sistemul fãcea parte dintr-un ansamblu mai vast de >persecutiuni sistematice împotriva oricãrui lucru care amintea în administratii, în scoalã si chiar în viata socialã, epoca Domnilor Moldoveni<.(N.Iorga, op.cit.pag.62).
