Maybe it won't be available to public, but in South Africa (not the state), they sure are developing prosthetic limbs for the military.
Well, I say military, in late 90's private company bought all of their research.
What they were trying to do, was that they would replace bones and muscles with synthetic materials that would boost the abilities of the user (getting bit sci-fi now), and then connect it to the nervous system, but it sidetracked and they started positively making prototypes of prosthetic limbs.
Problem was that nonetheless how good the technology was, they weren't able to connect the limbs in order for the user to feel again.
That is of course the biggest problem - loosing the cervical nerves in the part of that body.
In 2006 or something, they started experimenting with amniotic fluid, which actually brought some results - which was that some subjects were able to regrow fully functional cervical nerves, which seemed impossible until then.
While they were growing, they were able to attach synthetic material to the nerves, which resulted in user being able to feel his leg again.
That would all be great, but the user died of complications with his brain, due to his brain failing to use the new "tools" correctly.
Happened to few people that they tested, but some were actually able to fully function with those new augmentations.
Last thing that I heard was they almost tweaked all the details, and that they should go official in 10-15 years.
That was 2 years ago. All that's left now is rumors that they were successful and that in few years they will be able to start mass production for public.
No doubt it would be expensive as hell, still.
The man who told me that is now dead, but I can guarantee that he was speaking the truth, since I've seen pictures of the place.

There's no entry test to BSc / BA uni courses, your matura functions as your entry test instead. All written exams are state-wide, but I'm not sure about the oral part. You can take a basic or an advanced exam from each subject. Picking at least one advanced exam is pretty much a must if you want free uni.
Some other factors like language exams and sports medals also factor into your university entry score. At some point the gommies wanted to give you free points for being a Gypsy or being preggers, but they had to back out.

I think that since they revised maturas in 2005-ish, a foreign language has been obligatory. I didn't have to do it because I already had a language exam by that point.

We had the basic/advanced for math and I think the languages had it, too but they abolished it 2-3 years ago, I think.
Our prof at uni told us he once tried the advanced math exam and he had it done in 75min (the time limit in 90min) but god only knows how were the students supposed to do that shit when someone doing math as long as they lived had 15min to spare

Matura grades, and grades from the end of the third HS year and from the end of first semester of last year. And some bonuses if you have some and if the school accepts them. Friend signed up for some Microsoft program, finished it - then he shows it at uni and no bonus from it and it was IT, Microsoft apparently isn't IT enough.
For English I think if you have at least FCE then you don't have to do it, but I'm not sure.

I think it's a recurring complaint here that some years the advanced exam is piss easy, and it's bitching hard in others.
The math test sheet got leaked the year I did my matura, and people who applied for science majors had to re-write it. I'm a humanities fag so I could've kept my mark, but I re-wrote it anyway because I'm a gud boi like that.
It was so easy that I got a 5, even though I went to the Math For Retards class that my school launched for special cases like me.

The mark you get doesn't count for shit.
With a 60% Advanced test you only get about as many points as you'd get with an 80% Basic. When you do Advanced, you do it for the extra points on your uni applications.

Yeah, point requirements depend on the university, faculty and field, and the calculations are different for each too. For example, if I were to apply for social sciences or something, I'd get more points for my advanced language matura, but if I applied for programming I'd have less points because they don't care about that.
