In New Zealand, the bulk of the population lives in the North Island (About three quarters I think).
The North Island is less mountainous, had far more Maori Settlements and still has a much bigger Maori population and Pacific island population. More immigrants in the north but the two larger cities. Nicer weather and nicer beaches.
The South Island has better scenery with ski fields, mountains, native forests and most of the LOTR stuff you associate with New Zealand. Only really has two cities of note.
