i cant get how you can be one country already with spain for over 9000 years yet there are still shitload of "languages" inside which are not considered part of the spanish dialect continuum (like german and italian "languages"), nor even colonists like mexicans speaks it

so what I get you were part of the crown of aragon, yet your languages (aragonian and catalan/balearic/valencian) are not even related in modern day

and spaniards for some reasons grabbed galicia whose language is intelligible for portuguese and used to be one and the same in older times

i cant understand spain, you look like some fucked up version of yugoslavia, and they weren't even united for that long. even italy makes more sense
>>
>>52693840
Spain is kinda like Italy, the concept of a unified Spanish nation didn't appear until the 19th century. Up until that point, since 1492, Spain was just a different territories, with their own laws, languages and cultures that happended to be ruled by the same king. If you wonder about the colonization thing, and why Catalan isn't spoken there, the king of Spain didn't give permission to Catalan ports to trade with Latin American colonies, and proportionally, few Catalan immigrated there. The only Catalan explorers I can think of are the ones that colonized California, Gaspar de Portolà (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaspar_de_Portol%C3%A1). Aragonian language is pretty much extinct, and Catalan survived because the Spanish weren't succesful at erasing it, as the French did
>"In France and other Francophone countries, patois has been used to describe non-standard French and regional languages such as Picard, Occitan, and Franco-Provençal, since 1643, and Catalan after 1700, when the king Louis XIV banned its use.[3] The word assumes the view of such languages being backward, countrified, and unlettered, thus is considered by speakers of those languages as offensive when used by outsiders. Jean Jaurès said "one names patois the language of a defeated nation".[4] However, speakers may use the term in a non-derogatory sense to refer familiarly to their own language[citation needed] (see also languages of France)."
Catalan is just a romanic language, like Spanish, French or Italian. Did this clear your doubts? Ask me anything you want, I'm eager to answer.

Also, Catalans were later allowed to trade with Latin America, in the 18th and 19th centuries, and a lot of Catalans immigrated to the Caribbean, specially Cuba, in search of Wealth. Many made a lot of money with sugar plantations and rum distilleries and came back to Catalonia as rich people.(https://ca.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indi%C3%A0) Sorry, no English link. For example, the rum company Bacardí was established by a Catalan immigrant (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bacardi)
Also a lot of Catalans immigrated to Argentina and Uruguay.

Que tan viable seria una Catalunya independiente?

Independentists will tell you it would be paradise
Non-independentists will tell you it would be hell
To know the truth we would have to let it happen and watch.

>>
>>52696023
I see. Im currently learning some catalan on duolingo, if I ever go to Barcelona how will people react if I talk to them in catalan? My first language is spanish btw
>>
>>52696186

>>
>>52696199
surprised probably, no matter how shit your catalan is, people will praise you for trying. Keep in mind that, althought more than 90% understand catalan, 60% consider Spanish their main language, so some people might not give a shit. But if you happen to meet one of the 40% Catalan speakers, they will be impressed
>>
>>52696255
>>52696261
>>
>>52693840

It's far from strange. It was normal to have a plurality of languages and cultures. Think of Germany or France or England. And Italy ofc. It's just that some countries like France or Germany have cucked this variety of cultures and languages they once had into extinction via the official french/german nationalism discourse. The Dutchies do the same to the Frisian culture and language.

Also, Galicia was not "grabbed by the Spanish" it was a constituent part of Asturias-Leon from the Portuguese County broke off.

Also, the Spanish Monarchy was a collection of Kingdoms with their own institutions andshit, and America was Castillian clay, not Aragonese, and that's why the catalans couldn't into anything else than Sicily and Sardinia. Until the reformation of the system by the Bourbons in the XVIII.
>>
>Baltics not invited
Very rude
>>
>>52696514

How do Basques think about Catalonia and vice versa?
>>
>>52696945

>>52697065
not much, we have allied in a few thing to ask Madrid for more rights for our communities, but not a lot in common otherwise

sometimes yes, but the Basques have more economic privilegies (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basque_Economic_Agreement) in which they basically keep and manage their taxes, which Catalonia would like to have but isn't allowed to. That's why Catalans and Baques are not 100% friends.
But otherwise yes, there has always been good relations, and for example the football game Barcelona - Athletic, biggest team in Catalonia and Basque Country respectively is like a party, with good athmosphere.
Plus, there is a traditional game every year in Christmas (It was today!) between the Catalan and the Basque national teams
