Mm, PhD is really what I'm after, but if I didn't get it a Master's is qualification enough to be an adjunct professor at a university or a tenured professor at a community college in the US. As I implied, though, I'm not planning to stick around in the USA. I'm curious to see what kind of doors a Master's will open up for me abroad.
One of my Japanese friends here said that with a Master's degree I could easily teach English at a Japanese university, but I don't think he understood that my Master's won't be in English education, just English literature (I'd be getting one in English education but I was offered a graduate assistantship - which means free tuition - in the literature program rather than the education program).
