I don't think so, if it looks even if you don't understand it, I don't see how knowing how to actually write the characters ruins the aesthetic value. I guess it's the same when someone has really pretty handwriting, just because it's "simple" or rather something you're used to writing yourself doesn't change the fact that it's pretty.

There's a way to remember kanji which relies on you making stories for each character. The most popular one is Heisig. I'm doing Heisig right now, and I end up making all my stories about each character sexual, just because it makes it easier to remember. If you study it that way, it might ruin it but I really enjoy it.
