I don't know which is the best but I have some candidates in mind. In no particular order
>Hong Kong
>Singapore
>Tokyo
>Taipei
>Shanghai

Hong Kong has been stagnating in terms of innovation but both MIT and Alibaba have started to invest in HK's startups. Resurgence of the 亞洲四小龍 when?

Probably not very soon, I think they've had most of their growth.
The relationship between Hong Kong and Shanghai depends on CPC policy. If they decide they want to concentrate all trade in Shanghai they could probably draw a lot away from Hong Kong.
Tokyo probably doesn't fall into the comparison. Japan modernized earlier, and unlike Hong Kong, Singapore and Shanghai it is less like a first world city surrounded by third world. It is linked to the surrounding country in a different way.
Taiwan's future is kinda uncertain.

Proof that all good countries aren't "white", since Japan and Hong Kong are better than 90% of "white" countries.

The Korean clothes of the Korean drama are Korean fantasy.
Korea didn't have dye and wore white linen clothes.
The full dress of the official wife was the clothes which bared the breast.

During the rule era of Japan, 20century, Japan taught Koreans dye.

Because Koreans discriminated against craftsmen, the technique was cut off.

Only the noble who exploited the people were able to obtain the dyed cloth from China, but it became difficult as time goes by.
>>
>>52068184
Oh wow.
Some of my far ancestors dyed cloth for a living, it used to be a rather prestigious profession a couple of centuries ago.
Most of the common people here weren't able to afford dyed clothes either, especially dyed anything else than brown. Blue was known to be particularly expensive.

Korean Confucianism respected courtesy, and looked down working as something vulgar.
Craftsmen and merchants and warriors were vulgar people for Koreans.
The nobles who didn't work were respected.

I think the reason why Koreans look down upon Japanese would be that we are craftsmen basically, and that we are the race who has been repeating training as philosophy by military arts.
>>
>>52067493
Pop music anywhere is pretty awful but you do get a couple gems every now and then. HK cinema is losing its touch, while Taiwanese movies are extremely popular in HK btw. Still, I am excited for the new Yip Man movie.
>>
>>52069558
>Pop music anywhere is pretty awful
I disagree. I can understand why it wouldn't be your cup of tea, but it's easy for someone like me to enjoy dance tracks from Korea or some more vocal pop from Japan. Utada fucking killed it back in the day, and the production values of KPop stars these days is unbelievable. But Taiwanese pop music is, worse than everything else, just fucking repetitive and downtempo. No emotion, no rhythm, just piano and acoustic and vocals that hardly go beyond humming. It's absolutely lifeless.

>Taiwanese movies are extremely popular in HK
No surprise there, it's like recycled Japanese and Korean garbage, but now in Chinese and starring chink actors. The Sinosphere is a human centipede

>>
>>52069463
Before I forget to reply to this post
>I think the reason why Koreans look down upon Japanese would be that we are craftsmen basically, and that we are the race who has been repeating training as philosophy by military arts.
I think there are many more reasons why Koreans don't like Japan, but let's not go off topic too much.
Any society in which the craftsmen are really looked down upon is rotten. Every work is noble in its own way, as long as it contributes to society in some positive way.
>>
Taiwan is the pleb Chinaman's true ruler.
>>
>>52069463
>I think the reason why Koreans look down upon Japanese would be that we are craftsmen basically
And you'd be completely wrong. Korea has a huge craft economy these days and a much bigger drive towards warfare than you. They look down on you because of their history of subjugation, and the fact that they went into an unsuccessful civil war that left their country ravaged immediately after the sweeping changes you implemented in WW2, so they never got to see the infrastructural benefits that Taiwan enjoyed.

>>52069874
So basically you know almost nothing about Taiwanese pop culture. That's good, because neither does the rest of the world.

I agree with you.
I really do.

There are a lot of foreign students from Korea in my university and I think we are a kind of good friends.
But I feel some gap that I cannot explain, when I sometimes talk about the history with them.
We cannot talk based on the facts.
All we Japanese can do is to apologize.
It doesn't matter whether we really did or not.
I really tired with this condition.

But still, I love Korean movies and some dramas.

>I plan to learn Russian after I finish learning Japanese, though for now I only know blyat.
Quite good. You are on the right path!
Russian may not be a difficult language to learn for you, I say this because I've met many Chinese in Beijing who seemed to speak it fluently, though sometimes with irritating grammatical mistakes. I'd say the worst learners of Russian I've seen are Europeans for some reason. It's like they're too arrogant or falsely confident to really try.

Hell, we've also been hit by communism hard and we have our traditional Russian problems. I love my country, but it's been on a downhill slope.

I'm also learning Japanese, though I don't know if I'll ever use it for real communication. It's just an aesthetic language for me, that and well, I don't like translated content anymore. If I ever feel content with my Japanese skills, I'd really like to learn Chinese, at least just to speak first, something like Beijing Mandarin since I like the way it sounds the most.
>>
>>52077612
>If I ever feel content with my Japanese skills
Protip: you never really will

I think the Europeans you met are worse at Russian because:
-they are probably more likely to learn it than Asians even if they don't have a good motivation to take it to the end
-they probably learn it like they learnt German, French or English at school, disregarding the fact that they should put a lot more focus on vocab as the language is a lot less related

I think Russian is a difficult language for any non-slav. The Asians you met probably just did a better job studying it seriously.
>>
>>52077612
I appreciate the vote of confidence. I am learning Japanese because I want to read untranslated novels like Overlord and I travel there a lot.

I love Cantonese but it is much less useful than Putonghua, not to mention more complicated, so yeah you should definitely go with Putonghua if you like the sound. Do you prefer simplified or traditional characters?

I have a few questions. How do you feel about Putin and why are you living in Germany?

I suppose you're right. A big part of learning Russian is learning to understand Russian culture, which not everyone can do easily. Well, our own culture and mindset are constantly glorified and given such attributes as "mysterious" and "inexplicable", so not even Russians themselves can express clearly what they think is the Russian way of life. Hell, I digress so much.

>>52077973
To me Japanese was also my first window into East Asian culture, and it's how I learned 漢字, though they've always been Chinese to me (of course).

To me any variety of Chinese is legitimate but as you say Putonghua is simply the most useful. If I end up settling down in Hong Kong I'll make an honest effort learning Cantonese.

My opinion on the use of simplified and traditional is a bit... mixed actually. Generally I like traditional more but sometimes it feels like overkill to be writing always in traditional, and it's acquired a Taiwanese / HK connotation for me so I even imagine traditional characters as read in a southern accent. No matter what though, I just don't like the way simplified looks, so... gotta go with traditional. Sometimes I even feel that Japanese shinjitai should be un-simplified; some of the shapes are foreign, like the top of 学. I wasn't surprised to learn it was one of the Japanese simplifications adopted into Chinese..

>I have a few questions. How do you feel about Putin and why are you living in Germany?
Putin is a player, well, an admirable politician, I would say he is a true Russian statesman, but as a consequence of that, he cares more about projecting his power than improving the life of the average Russian. I'm in Germany temporarily, I switch countries every several years as a matter of lifestyle.

So, more autism from me, since this thread is so cozy:

I have an interest in learning Classical Chinese (文言文, 漢文 etc.), but is there any point in trying to do that without the knowledge of modern Chinese? It seems to me that the grammar is fundamentally similar at least in principle, and the characters often have special readings which is all of course lost on me, so lately I've been feeling that I just need to learn to speak Chinese first.
>>
>>52078729
Ah, figures. I don't think US soldiers are very popular there. Some stuff with a child that managed to get under a military vehicle among a great many other incidents.
You could try to learn the language though, probably the easiest way to becoming a bit more popular there.

classical Chinese is an entirely different bird from modern Mandarin. It has more in common with southern dialects such as Cantonese. you could study a modern dialect in preparation if you really wanted to, but that's like learning modern English so as to understand Beowulf in its original text.

>>52078953

I see, all right then.

>>52079108
To be fair Japanese has prepared me for some of the peculiarities of the grammar but the only way I can articulate the text in my head is by using Japanese readings which sounds ghetto as hell. You might find it funny though
>>
>>52079298
which is weird, but hell, the Mandarin pronunciations wouldn't help you much either

>>
>>52079397

For example the following sentence

寡人之從君而西也、亦晉之妖夢是踐。

I pretty much read as:

Kajin shi juu kun ni shi ya, eki shin shi you mu shi ze sen.

I can substitute some readings with the Japanese kun'yomi but then the text verges on being converted into Japanese outright, with restructurisation and all, and that's what I decided I want to avoid. At any rate, I guess these on'yomi are enough for now.
>>
>>52080122
>shi
sei, 西 is that in Japanese. Some leftover Mandarin there... Sometimes I read 而 as ji and sometimes "er" as in Mandarin. It's weird as hell t b h, which is why I thought I wanted a system to contain my autism.
>>
>>52078933
We learn Classical Chinese beginning from grade school, autistic Simplified Chinese and everything. A high school graduate is expected to be able to decipher any random body of Classical Chinese text with minimal annotations if possible. The grammar is completely kek though, lots of inverted sentence structures going on. Unless you are a designated Sinophile, I would recommend against spending too much time learning Classical. There's just no pragmatic use except for impressing your Chinese friends at a house party.
>>
>>52080122
The stuff about kunyomi was a joke by the way, it wouldn't work one single bit.
I can't read classical chinese of course, so I don't really bother trying to think of the pronunciation.
If I wanted to know the pronunciation I'd be better off just looking everything up in a chinese dictionary than substituting it with any sound that I know to certainly be wrong or at best a vague approximation of the real sound.
>>
>>52080352
From what I read it should be considered an integral part of the study of Chinese, only at a much more advanced level.

>>52080352

Yes, I would call it the zenith of Chinese studies. Academics of Classical Chinese are the most prestigious amongst other Chinese fields. If you really choose to fuck off Classical, then I would give up my approval. What basic readings have you been over?
>>52080503
Nah mate, that grammar is far too ambiguous and all those “通假字”, that would be a migraine for most beginners. I say continue with the teachings of Classical, but stick to vernecular for beginners.
>>
>>52080352
>There's just no pragmatic use except for impressing your Chinese friends at a house party.
That's pretty much what I'm going for, thanks for the reply. I will always be small time though.

>>52080378
It's when it comes down to something really weird like different tonal readings of the same character 為 that it gives me pause (wei2 vs wei4), how do I observe that distinction at all.
>>
>>52080730
>Nah mate, that grammar is far too ambiguous and all those “通假字”, that would be a migraine for most beginners. I say continue with the teachings of Classical, but stick to vernecular for beginners.
Amateur opinion here but something of a much less ambiguous grammar can be distilled from the surviving classical works if the abbreviated style is discarded. It's what was done to Latin in Europe during the Renaissance. Anyway, I'm not qualified enough for this discourse.
>>
>>52080730
Pretty sure the Singaporean was making a joke.
>If you really choose to fuck off Classical, then I would give up my approval.
I don't think I quite understand what you mean with this sentence, would you mind rephrasing it?
>What basic readings have you been over?
I haven't read any Classical Chinese as my knowledge of it is virtually nonexistant. What little I know of it is mainly famous quotes from old texts and it being mentioned in several Chinese learning resources as eventually being important to learn, but only after quite some time.
>>
To Japanbros, I'm curious, to what level of Classical Chinese can you decipher?
Here's a simple excerpt (forgive my asshat Simplified Chinese).
