'Keeping your files and shit organised' thread.

How do you keep all your files neat and tidy /ic/?

I had a system a year ago, but it's gone to shit with file names like finalfinal123-final9.ai.

If you have a reference library filled with images and other artist's work you like, how do you keep it organised so you can find things by subject etc?

I was thinking of using OneNote for my documents and write-ups, but I don't know if its versatile enough.

Share your ways /ic/, help us out.

I have an art folder, with sub-folders "books" "drawings (my art)" "inspiration", "resources" (where I keep all my templates / palettes / etc), "scans" (where my scanned stuff automatically goes before I organize it into my drawings folder), and "tutorials"

I categorize my art in folders by month. I have a "wip" subfolder in each month for the various versions, and then the final version goes in the month folder. Eventually that goes into a year folder. I also have a folder where I put my favourite stuff each month so I can flip through it and measure progress.

My inspiration/references folder is largely photos, and generally I just create a folder whenever there's a subject that that I have a lot of refs for. A few have subfolders too. I should probably organize it, a few could easily go into other folders here.

Generally with filenames I just go by some keyword that's relevant like "knight" or "old man", most of my organizing is at the folder level.

I create yearly folders and have a naming scheme using the international date format like
>15-12-18 random title.sai
Other than my own files I don't save much. Resource hoarding is a bad habit. I try to download one book at a time and work through it.

I get anxious when saving so I screenshot with sharex and put that on tumblr then I save the original on some folder like d:art then when that fills up I put it all in one folder called art old. Then I repeat when that fills up again (when Windows starts to struggle viewing everything ) .

It sucks but it's better than my old system of "desktop>desktop OLD> backup 2013 > unsorted >downloads > untitled folder (2) > desktop " that I have on an external somewhere.

It's good for hiding porn tho. And nostalgia spelunking

Forgot to mention: I keep stuff I really like on my google drive. For bookmarking I use pocket

More or less the same as this anon minus the monthly thing.

My inspiration/references folder/subfolders are a mess but it's perfectly fine.

kek I always crack up at artist's filenames. Mine got pretty bad using all different variations of denoting that this file was indeed the final one, even though there more often than not was yet another.

It's leaving future me to deal with the mess so I cam have 5 seconds free in the present!

Also, what do you guys use for search? Windows new search since 10 has been broken for me. Is there a software that can maybe isolate all your psds or images into one big mega folder? I use Adobe bridge but it never indexes right.

I have an external harddrive where I keep all my photos (I work traditionally). The first thing I do when I transfer the photos is create a folder wothin my "camera" folder with today's date. The transferred photos are put into a folder called "original", where both the jpegs and raw are. When I want to edit the photos, I duplicate the "original" folder and name it "edit1". It's important to keep all the originals intact because one day when you write an essay about a work or something, maybe you want a wip pic, and find out you deleted all those pics. Always duplicate folders and keep the original intact.

The finished edits are moved to another folder called "finished work" where I have folders named "year_month title". You get a feeling of accomplishment when you have a proper list of everything that's complete.

Also, I store my stuff on my computer, my external harddrive and on Dropbox. Always store your stuff on multiple units because hard drives can break sometimes!

I can't help my packrat nature. So usually once every 6 months or so I delete pretty much everything but the bare essentials. They usually go through trials folders within folders where I pack them up and wait a month and stuff comes out that I actually use and I delete the rest. Being a chan whore with a penchant for saving shit is hard because I end up with gigs upon gigs of photos and shit ill never actually study from or use.
