Anyone here a guru with a spray can?

I create string art and I'm currently planning out a new piece. Part of it, however, i want to spray my canvas differently (rather than the usual flat black color).

I've noticed a lot of street artists making outrageous work with spray paint and gloss paper. One technique in particular is layering a bunch of colors and then laying a piece of newspaper or plastic to peel some color off and make a textured look.

My question is, can i create the same effect if I do this on a wooden canvas?? Or will the wood absorb too much?

If anyone knows any other cool techniques i can incorporate into my string art, drop it here.
