As others said, this is indicating shapes by not drawing them, WWF logo is a famous example of that (the one with panda). In the words of /gd/ it's part of gestalt psychology, Prägnanz, Law of Closure.

Generally it's good to get into graphic design if you want to be a better painter.
Recommendations: "Universal Principles of Design" by William Lidwell, both book and his short videos.
