You cover a photo with shitty strokes, this is just sad.
>>
>>2577613
That really does look like you're just drawing over a photo, and this is in no way a compliment. Even if you did actually draw that from a ref (or from scratch) you killed it. Definitely an improvement though, keep it up.

So basically I cherry pick the worst drawing I did on January 2014 and the best on December 2015 and say it's only been a year of progress?
>>
>>2577677
Yes anon. Every single artist in the world is out to trick you and deceive you, but you are such a smart cookie that you see right through their feeble attempts.
>>
>>2577640

People aren't calling it a photobash/paintover because it looks too good to be drawn. They're calling it that because it looks like one.
There's a visible difference between a painting that achieves realism, and a photo that's been painted over. Even if it's the former and just looks like the latter, that's a problem.

>mechanical stuff
I just really like robotics. I used to build a lot of Gundams which are good for spatial visualization of joints and panel separations.

It's like if you like tits, you will probably spend extra care and time to draw them perfectly to your liking. Just replace tits with robots. The converse is also true. I hate looking at people's faces, and I do a shit job drawing them - unless those faces are turtle.fish.paint faces... I digress

I am not saying that you could not of drawn this and made a lot of progress but the skill set behind this progression is very uneven. The drawing lines up with the photo very well. The colors are exactly the same, but spread out in different intensity. The brush strokes look terrible.

How could some one have such a good eye for drawing and color, but have the strokes of a chimpanzee with Parkinsons. That is what we are debating. People dont generally nail one thing with 100% accuracy and then entirely lack an adjacent skill set.

Pic below shows them overlaid and the palette.

All I'm seeing is that you got less creative over time
>>
>>2580216

Anyone who studies life gets told they're becoming human photocopiers, anyone who draws from imagination / stylize is told they need to study more from life.
>>
>>2581053
I don't see what's wrong with that statement and that's no reason to ignore >>2580216 advice. Do you draw from life? if not start drawing from life.
>>
>>2581077

I'm not tableguy, but I draw from life almost exclusively and I'm shit at imagination drawing, which is why I can appreciate somebody working on their imagination drawing rather than just pumping out studies like a lot of /ic/. I'm merely making an observation. Getting out of your comfort zone always means temporary shortfalls as you get used to something, "draw more from life" is not the magic fix-all solution to learning to draw from imagination, you actually need to practice drawing from imagination.

tableguy, how did you get so good in a ridiculously short amount of time? It fucking kills me, because I haven't progressed nearly as much. In 2014, I was where you were 2013, but I'm still not where you were towards the tail end the next year, when you started using copics.
Please, teach me your ways.

Alright, I'll try to do that, but one question.
What does that even mean?
I understand the concept of master studies, but whenever I try and do them, I feel like I;m wandering aimlessly, way out of my scope.
It's hard to explain... It's just as though they're so far and above my ability that all it does is trigger (fuck I hate that word) my low self esteem.
>>
>>2580896
not saying that my shit is any good, but a blob of spikes? come on
>>
>>2581168

No, i stand by it. It took me a minute to see it was supposed to be an arm. That image shows me nothing.

I'm not saying you as an artist isn't good. The point is I can't tell if you have practiced fundamentals, because I can't see them.

It is just a blob of shapes, spikes and shadows. There's no thought into doing this, only what you think looks cool. Don't even pretend that's not true.

It's an awful image to show off how much you've progressed, because you could be anywhere on the scale of beginners.

Routine? Any tips firez? What would would you do differently if you had to learn again? Mirin
>>
>>2581102

From what I can understand you're supposed to draw from life/use reference so that you get new information/knowledge about how things work. Then you apply what you learned by drawing from imagination.

If you just stick to your imagination without taking in anything new it's like inbreeding.

That female figure is way fucked up my FiRez. Are you really trying to get the fashion proportions of 8+ heads?

It just looks so out of place since she has such a small and cute face. Fashion proportioned bodies also look really unnatural in my opinion.

Apart from that, there is just simple errors with the construction and inconsistencies in the perspective.

the faces look cute though

>your ways
I only draw what I want to draw. I only study X when I want to study X. If you always do what you want, you end up enjoying drawing, and you gain mileage quickly. But the lack of discipline makes it hard for me to study fundamentals.

My earlier attempts to study faces were a waste of time because my heart wasn't in it so I learned nothing.

Also, only compare your progress to your past self. Everyone operates under different conditions with different goals. For the past year, I've been trying to draw more green dots (imagination) and do more digital so I only compare myself in 2016 with myself in 2015 with respect to these 2 goals. Also, I enjoy creating these "drawing timelines" to reminisce about memorable/challenging drawings, and not necessarily to gauge progress.

>>2581156
>what does that even mean?
For years all I've been doing is copying favorite artists... and /ic/ gives me a lot of shit about it, and it is well deserved. Perpetual "studying" is not good path, but it felt good so I did it and still do it.

Maybe my brain is just wired differently than yours, but if I can identify a skill level delta then I know exactly where I should focus my work next time. Knowing what I want to work on is reassuring - it doesn't make me upset.
>>
>>2581530

Thanks anon

I'm afraid I don't have a routine, my days are so contrived that I just try to do draw as much as possible, However, I do try to split my daily drawing time in 50% pure learning 50% personal works and until very recently, commissions.

>Any tips

Try to provoke a mood/state of being in your finished illustrations and a solid grasp of form in everything you do (intersections, awareness of 2 point perspective, line weight are key for this).

>What would would you do differently if you had to learn again?

I would try to find and follow some sort of curriculum (these days I try to finish books and follow the NMA videos) and spend more time on pure drawing before jumping to painting,

It looks like in 2013 a guy didn't bother finishing the painting/didn't spend so much time on it and in 2014 he went an extra mile to correct things.

Yeah, I see that there's some alteration to bust, collarbone etc., but this is minor stuff. Painter could have made 2014 painting in 2013 by just committing a bit more to it.

In truth I suspect that he left in 2013 being fed up with it, dig it up in 2014 and decided to change stuff and finish detail and lighting.

Could you explain why you think Im trolling? Perhaps its because ears.. I just like them, but furry stuff is not my goal. I trying draw everything, focus on characters. Right now Im very inspired by Rafael Santi after saw his work at the museum. Madonna of the Pinks and Christ Blessing are so grateful paintings.

Just really started trying to learn how to draw this past year or so. I'm more of a writer by trade, but I had a cartoon idea and I knew if I ever wanted it to work I'd at least need to be competent enough to do some basic storyboarding and concept.

How am I doing so far?

the progress isn't terrible your moving forward with technical ability, just looks like a bad case of study sickness. try and look at artists that inspire you and draw what you like even if you don't have the skills yet. after a while of doing that, you get a better idea of what you should be studying and you might not feel so lost

It's not what i'm doing right now, i only put in 5-6 hours a day, and don't pick up the books nearly as often as i could. 6-8 hours is a comfortable ideal amount for me, and while anything above that could be helpful, i'm not at a point that i could consistently put in that time and stay focussed on learning.

It wouldn't be a schedule that you could just jump into, you'd have to spend a while building up to it, and i'd strongly recommend taking this advice into account beforehand too >>2586694

if you really focus on perfecting everything in the books, one step at a time and not skipping a step until it's solid in your brain, it seems ridiculous to say you wouldn't improve a lot.

Perspective, construction and form building, along with pen skills. i'd put this stuff as a priority.

do some figure studies every now and then. same with gesture drawings. it doesn't even have to be that often, but you need to get decently competent with those. you need to get good with studies in general in order to learn how to draw what you see.

other than that you need to review more. way more.
constantly review your own work, and compare yourself to the pros. and not to the lowest common denominator, no. i mean compare yourself to your favorites and the very best out there.

compare, and be brutally honest. right now you can't stand up to them at all. compare, think about the differences and figure out what you need to work at to get there.

it's good that you're drawing so much, but you need to be more goal driven. again, chase after your absolute favorites in order to understand where you want to go.
right now you're still weak sauce.

At first glance those bottom two looked pretty shit, but I think that's just bad photo quality - you're actually progressing quite nicely, IMO. Also you're only 18 so just keep drawing all the goddamn time no matter what.

My recommendation is you get to work grinding on some figure drawing and anatomy stuff when you have the opportunity - if college classes aren't an option, look for a community art center that offers life model sessions. You can go back to playing around with distorted proportions like you have in the wolverine later on - "know the rules before you break them" and all that. Keep it up!

It's like no one has actually learned how to basic shit and all you fuckers do is look up tutorials on absurdly specific things. Mastering someone's guide to "rendering hair highlights in photoshop" doesn't mean much when your dude has a baby arm and a body made of turds and play-doh

never actually talked on /ic/ or gotten critiques. i've been finding myself in a really horrible slump and i've come to the realization that i have almost never drawn backgrounds or done architectural studies technical studies, anything useful, nothing like that just because i've always considered myself bad at it, and i give up so easily.

i feel awful cause ive been drawing since i could hold a pencil but my improvement pace has not been what i wish it was. i really want to branch out and get better but i'm nervous and have always stayed in my comfort zone.

pic related- it's mostly (digital)shit from late middle school, but the stuff on the right is from freshman year. this was 4-5 years ago. it's basically the kind of shit i draw nowadays, even though i'm a bit better now. this is just to show the lack of variety in content and i'm just really disappointed at how little my art's subject matters have changed from the stuff in this pic. i have no idea where to start branching out and i'm afraid it's too late. i'll post some recent stuff to show my progression. i'm not sure how harsh the critiques will be and i've already prepared myself for the "just give up now" kinds of comments.

is it "cheating" to paint backgrounds directly from reference? what kinds of backgrounds are best to start with?

oh hey trips get
anyways
this is more recent stuff, within the past year. the cat was painted last week(fuckin lol at the placeholder background) and the "realism" portrait was painted yesterday, with a reference. i can post the ref if anyone's interested. i wanted to make a realistic version of one of my characters and that's what came out of it.

those two aforementioned pieces are intentionally more detailed than the others(not so much that cat but yeah), especially the portrait, because i'm wondering if i fucked up by focusing on just drawing my own way rather than learning from realism and life. i'm not even sure if it's better for me to just start studying real life and drawing realism at this point, but it just makes me feel bad and unoriginal. i don't know where to go from here and what specific things to focus on. i've read shit tons of books and tried some studies with faces and bodies....and i've looked for good background references. now that i'm serious about art (cause i just graduated and i'm a hopeless case in every other area and really have no choice but to be serious about the only thing i can kind of do) i really want to improve quickly. i just feel so bad because i see other people that are my age and so much better than me and i sperg out before i can ask them what they used.

posts like >>2588266 give me a little bit of hope for myself, since /ic/ seems to be intensive and harsh but effective.

sorry for the autistic mess of a post but yeah i just don't know what to do.
>>
>>2588333
>is it "cheating" to paint backgrounds directly from reference? what kinds of backgrounds are best to start with?
You mean like copying background from photos? It's a good way to start I would say, since it's hard to imagine and draw something you've almost 0 experience with. Once you've done quite a number of landscape then it would certainly be easier later on.

You should check out Noah's first video on landscape btw, I believe this would make it easier for you to do landscape work later.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kQfF-P70V2Q

Rocks and clouds might be easier to start with, compared to the like of trees but that's only my personal opinion.

>I'm in college right now so I still have some time to git good at art.
No you don't. Trust me. I make cartoons, and I've always been a better writer than most of my peers, but also a worse artist. I figured it was fine. I've won awards, and everyone says "it doesn't matter how it looks as long as the story is good!" But do you think a Pixar movie would be even half as effective if it looked how you draw? Now all my friends who are better artists have jobs as animators, and I'm working retail after college. You. Do not. Have some time. Get studying.
>>
>>2588341
glad i could help.

First priority should be to learn how to self-critique, so you don't have to waste time asking "amidoingitrite" for every drawing you make.

>always finish what you start
>never leave any mistakes you can fix.
>think of ways to do it better.
>try not to make the same mistakes as last time.
>repeat

Improving fast requires a lot of discipline. You have to be willing to draw a lot, read a lot, and pay attention. Consistent action is the only way to make gains, and that means studying when you're not drawing, drawing when you're not studying, and building a love for the art process over time. You literally have to develop Stockholm Syndrome for the artistic process.

Don't forget that you want to improve, even when you don't feel like it, That means drawing through depression, and staying healthy so you can work hard. If you absolutely don't want to do anything, you have to decide to hate yourself, and draw regardless.

Most of the improvement process is deciding to eat past the ice cream headache, i.e. continuing to draw even when you don't see improvement, feel like it, have an art block, etc.

You've gotten better but as I was scrolling down I kept wondering when you'd fix the skull issue. You need to pay more attention and actually put some sort of anchor to your guidelines instead of just randomly putting lines, it's like I can see you drawing it too fast like a speed painting.

I'm liking the shapes in your studies though, some have more flow than mine.

It's possible to be too ambitious in the beginning. Start small and slowly work your way up, this is the way to make the best progress.

You need to practice the very basics. The fundamentals, as some would call it. Practice with simple shapes first.

Do life studies at different angles of simple objects, such as a pencil sharpener. You will gain observational skills without being too overwhelmed by an immense and complex subject.

Best of luck to you.
