Hey Simon.

No. To understand why look at people like Ruanjia, Mullins, JJ and other top chinese. It's good by everyman standards though.
>>
>>2571110
Ruanjia and Mullins are great, not good. OP's pic is good by pretty much anyone's standards other than frustrated Dunning Kruger sufferers from /ic/.

TOPPEST OF BAITY BAITS MY GOOD FRIEND HERE IS YOU'RE (You) ;))))
>>
>>2571088

Are there any other artists with a similar retro-dystopic feel to their work? I've only seen it in Stalenhag because its been posted on /ic/ multiple times.
>>
How do we know it isn't photobashed?

Woah Simon don't get so mad bro. It was just my opinion.
>>
>>2571119
Faggots like you are so unbelievably predictable. It's literally always the exact same pattern.

>make stupid statement about some pro's artwork
>pretend anyone who calls you out on your stupidity is the artist in question
>>
>>2571088
Nop. Maybe a good drawing but that's all.
>>
>>2571118

It's not photobashing since there is no actual photographic elements in the picture. He uses photos to build his reference though and sometimes he paints over them. Technically not photobashing if the photos are not part of the finished work, though.

it may be good in the internet art circles.
on the whole, hell no, not even close to good
>>
>>2571112

I don't see what makes Ruanjia better than Stålenhag. It's more like they have different strengths. I'm not convinced that Ruanjia would be particulary successful in emulating Stålenhags flat goauche like style and Stålenhag wouldn't do great trying to be Ruanjia. Stålenhag's storytelling skills are light years ahead of Ruanjia IMO.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Reads as a rendering excercise more than a illustration with a narrative to me. Composition is so so. Overall has a rather patchy look. I don't think the image in OP is Simon's strongest work, far from it, but his illustrations give me a sense of a real world that I could take a step into. This doesn't make me feel anything.

>I don't see what makes Ruanjia better than Stålenhag

because he doesn't color pick from photos.
>>
>>2571136
agreed. Its a matter of taste also
>>
>>2571088
I find his stuff to be boring and dull, just in terms of how it looks. Boring compositions, flat dull colors, boring mark making. But also boring when it comes to story. It's always the same thing - something weird standing around in a normal scene, with a person standing around looking at it or pointing at it. Meh.

His drawing is good and shape language for the weird things is ok. He'd probably make a decent spaceship concept artist.

dude, it's just lots of rendering. ruanjia is the meme artist of /ic/
>>
>>2571274

I'm around his age and grew up in the same city as Stålenhag so that's probably a huge part why his work speaks to me so much. Obviously specific things like public transportation vehicles from the 80's wouldn't have a nostalgia factor for a non swede
