your character has no forehead and his hands are smaller than his eyeballs. I feel as though you ran out of room after drawing the head, and decided to cram everything in afterwards. The first step to a decent drawing is making sure everything has a proper proportion. If that means leaving some things out, then so be it.

If I were to redraw it, I'd move the eyebrows/eyes/nostril group down, so that the nostrils share the same horizontal as the bottom of the ears.

I feel as though your weakest fundamental is proportion. look up anime proportions and practice one you like until you can do it from memory

the left foot was drawn incorrectly and because of that, the entire left leg looks much worse than it actually is.

The left arm is inactive which makes it look as if he's reaching for something, rather than supporting himself
with it.

Remember: active muscles contract, which is how they pull bone. and when they contract they appear fatter than they do when relaxed. if you know which muscles are active in a certain position, then you know what to fatten and what not to.

your weakest fundamental is perspective. you don't have to stop what you're doing, but i recommend studying foreshortening until you have it locked down.

These aren't bad, but they're not great either.
I can tell from the drawings on the right that you understand observational drawing, and you clearly know how to draw faces, but the head shapes are absurd.

Form is your weakest fundamental.
I'd hate to throw memes at you, but studying loomis is probably the best thing you can do if you want to get rid of this flaw. practice drawing loomis heads until you understand the form of the head. Once you're done, the next time you do those quickpose gestures, you'll have an easier time.

I did this self portrait almost 5 years ago. It was the most recent one I have done though. I am about to get back into drawing etc, and wanted to see what you would fix with this (I am sure there is lots) This took me an hour and a half at the time. (Was done in grey-scale then colored quickly with an overlay layer)
>>
>>2569385
Im not OP, but the main issue I see here is your still stuck in symbol drawing. You aren't drawing something even remotely real. Manga/anime style is based on distorted reality. You are also drawing in 2DOther than the boots there is no depth.

DON"T DRAW ON LOOSE LEAF! At the bare minimum invest in some heavy poundage printer paper.

Your drawing is also too small. The larger it is the more easily you will be able to add detail.

Look at the way you made the hands. Imagine holding your hands that way it would be awkward.

Lots more that could be said but the main thing is ditch symbols and draw what you see/imagine.
>>
>>2569385
This thread will do absolutely nothing for you.

>>
>>2569414
not bad. if you were to refine this art style it'd be fantastic for a webcomic or an american cartoon. It's always challenging to give advice for stylized characters,

I'll redline these first thing tomorrow. I know what's wrong but it's hard to put into words. a few small tweaks and it'll be solid.

>>2569418
you have the exact opposite problem of >>2569317
it looks like you know the shape of the head but you're using symbols (football eyes, L nose, etc.) in an observation drawing.

I recommend reading drawing on the left side of the brain, in combination with keys to drawing.

If anyone else is reading this:
Symbol drawing is a tool, and by that I mean, it's not a bad thing if used wisely.

If you are drawing anything without reference, you are symbol drawing by default. If you draw a god-tier illustration without reference, you are symbol drawing. Murata, KJG, whoever else, are all drawing using symbols.
If you've ever seen a portrait done in someone's art style before, like in futurama, south park, or even someone like kr0n, The reason why you can tell who it is, even though the drawings are way different, is because they are properly filtering reference through their own symbols.

Symbol Drawing is only controversial when used in observational drawing, because the excersise is to get rid of bad symbols. Even then, there are ways to use it to improve an observational work: like in pic related

Not op but it's pretty obvious you are new. Your tits are fucked and your perspective is also fucked. Look up keys to drawing (Bert Dodson) read it and do the excises. After that redraw this. Also at the beginning the more you draw the better. I wouldn't spend over 2+ hours on a piece on your level.

When it comes to perspective , u need to practice. That being said , my way of trying to draw correctly when it comes to stuff such as perspective is to break everything into cubes and circles. Cubes are easier to put in perspective. From the cube then , you kinda try to shape what you want . Again i'm not OP. I'm just telling you from experience .

Competent enough but it doesn't capture much beyond her general likeness. Feels a bit like a drawing of a mannequin.

For your next portrait, try sitting closer to your subject's eyeline, and play music or talk to them--something to keep them alert.
>>
>>2570823
Draw your studies at a larger scale so you can work on the details.

You're already doing it a bit, but try to concentrate on sculpting areas of value rather than outlining shapes. Nothing in real life has an outline, just contrasting areas of dark and light.

You can be a special snowflake and use bright colored pencil if you must, but there's a reason most people use charcoal (or pencil if you have to work out of a sketchbook).

Same with you. Work on your perspective and wrapping around volume. Start simple to get the right perspective. Observe the way the facial features wrap around the skull. The eyes and lips are usually the part most people struggle with. I drew some arrows to show how an eye further from us is different than the one closer. Same with the lips. Overlap form.

>symbol drawing

Is it really symbol drawing when you have spent years studying how to draw various objects?! Symbol drawing refers more to when people are drawing things that they don't know how to draw. They have to refer to an unclear memory which becomes symbolic of the object, but not a realistic depiction of it.

If I studied drawing badgers to the point I can do a pretty realistic from memory is it really symbol drawing at that point?!

>>2577937
I agree, OP is wrong there. What he described is not the definition of "symbol drawing" as generally referred to by artists.

Symbol drawing is drawing, say, "an eye and eyelashes" as opposed to "a circle, arches, and lines" for example. In other words, not thinking in a visual language. The upside down Stravinsky exercise is a way to escape from this way of thinking.

This is one source that goes more in detail

http://painting-course.com/106/drawing-lessons/symbols-of-drawing/
>>
>>2578153
Just to correct my post: the eye example wasn't the best one because it can be misunderstood.

I mean that if you stop thinking of what you are drawing as an eye, or what you think an eye should look like, and instead think visually--of masses, lines, forms, etc-- then you can overcome symbol drawing.

Artists such as kjg can draw an eye in various situations, lighting, and angles, manipulating, and sometimes omitting, forms and lines--and that is the expression of his visual language. It's certainly not symbol drawing.

Well you made her right eye crooked and slimmed/elongated the face without knowing what the subject actually looks like.

Based on the sketch alone I can only say that the eyes are too large and the angle of the chin is too sharp.
>>
>>2578341
you do realize i split the pear in half right?
Also concerning the chin, you just proved to me you don't draw.

Literally what?

In the sketch the chin is at a 100 degree angle where it meets her cheek. It's highly unlikely that the original model had this feature in real life.

Instead of making the chin more realistic for the sketch, you idealized the model and gave her a chin from your imagination. OP clearly emphasized the dimple in her chin.

I don't even know what you're going on about pears for.

Get your basics straight before you try "fixing" things that don't need to be fixed.

Good to see someone actually bothering with construction, it's not bad at all.
>tips:
1. Work on your line quality, it's pretty shit. There's a ton of exercises on that, you have no excuse.
2. Add one more step before sketching construction - gesture. An arm in this position would be very uncomfortable. Lots of tutorials on gesture out there, try it, it's actually fun.

Fucking awesome colors. However I feel like there's a bit of inconsistency with the textures and line thickness. Namely the arms have very modeled musculature compared to the torso and the hands have very dark lines.

I also feel like it would have a greater impact if it was more carefully centered and symmetrical considering the pose and composition.
>>
>>2580113
I agree with >>2580325, but I will say that you have potential. You have, at the very least, a basic grasp of things like construction and form, and could probably git gud given enough practice.
As for specific critiques, I would advise that you exaggerate the expressions a bit more, and stop with the chicken-scratch linework.
I really do think that you should read the sticky, and use the resources that it provides.

other guy was a dick, I like your panel composition, overall pretty easy to follow. But, there are a lot of things to work on : anatomy, rendering/shading, proportion and staying on model would be a good start.

You use the same texture for shading everything, so things appear flat. There's no contrast in anything, so the composition is dull. Additionally, you need to pick a direction for your light source if you're drawing from imagination, it's all over the place.

Secondly, the anatomy is fucked, look at how long the torso is compared to the legs on your left figure on panel two.The hand also lacks structure and looks flat, among other things. The feet lack detail/proportion, and right guy's torso in the last frame is weirdly proportioned to his head/misshapen. Clothing you should look at, and understand what it is. Your clothes don't look like actual clothes. They look like what you think clothes look like.

You really should do more figure drawing/anatomy studies/drawing from life if you want things to look good. You also seem to have trouble staying on model for the characters, black haired dude looks different each panel. Try to construct and understand what you're doing, don't be afraid to use references, and your comics will look better for it.
