when do you know you're good enough to do commission work?

when you propose them and people say yes. Theres a ton of shitty people doing commissions.

How many hours do you spend on doing those commissions?

Dude that's like..
$2400 a year
Your time would be better spent improving your skills to make more money with art rather than stagnating yourself with commissions.

Watch this podcast, it talks about the dangers of using your passion for desperate money and how you should keep your day job until you're able to pursue your passion in it's purest form

That's the gist of it. People will buy crap for a crap load of cash. I've seen really amateur work sell for like 70 bucks, or worse, pic related.

I see that you've already figured out the secret to exploiting people's insecurity into cash. I'm thinking about learning to write motivational and self help things too.

Those are average gallery prices. A 5x5 oil with simple framing runs about 100$. Chuck in a BFA and solid reasoning/aesthetics and that shit goes up. Part of a finite body of work, ask the printmakers about limited runs.

It's not shit, it's what it's worth. Minimum wage at 8hrs nets about 100$ and can be trained in days. How do you value a lifetime of skill/study/experimentation that goes into these works?

Although I watched a landscape artist net 50k in 10 minutes at a reception the other day. Midcarrear stuff, nothing groundbreaking or over 5000$ but it sold.

Dollar menu artworks are a crime.

Holy fuck, I should really finish my non-art-related studies and get good in area that isn't commercial art because shiiiieeet...I'd rather keep art as hobby and paint for myself than scraping for generic ideas of others just to make ends meet while rejecting everything else in life that isn't "art".
>>
>>2567357
Yeah and I make $5000 a month as a concept art intern.
>>
Do you charge $10 or $20 for your tumblr commissions?
>>
>>2567357
That's really not much money at all. Have you broken it down hourly? The lowest price I'll take is about $400 and that's for one tiny little editorial piece, black and white. I mean shit that will take me 5-6 hours from sketch to completion to do. No bigger than 4" on the longest side.
>>
Is there any way to do commissions without anybody knowing your real name?

What you'll do for $400, I'll do for $75. Though I typically get about $250 for a full size color piece.

Sorry if this is a noob question or not alowed in this board but what are the average prices for watercolors, oils or other comissions?
What's the 'fair' price?
I mean, I know it's very subjective and relative but I'm pretty lost and any insight would be appreciated

Don't post those, they're fucking garbage. The prices in that guide are for professionals that people actually want to hire, not amateur jackoffs from Craigslist. I wouldn't say so.
I personally would try not to experiment or try anything new when commissioning, out of respect for the client, so it's just pulling from what you already know you can comfortably do.

Suuuuuure

This is why "show your work" is the best argument for threads like this. It's a meme for a reason. Threads like this are absurdist bullshit, it's like /ic/'s own indigenous artform - make believe storytime / delusional play by post.

But then again this is my favorite part of ic, so keep it up!

How can you get into commissions? Is there a specific website?

Should I just post on deviant art my work and wait?
>>
>>2578761
>>2584843
What he said. I'd rather draw for $10-20 an hour than not make any money at all. I've been paid $75 for an unfinished sketch that I wasn't trying to sell, and I've been paid $300 for book covers. They each probably took the same amount of time. I've also worked on RPG books amd boardgames, typically for between $75 and $150 per illustration. $75 per piece doesn't sound like a lot, but when you're commissioned to do 54 at one time, it fucking adds up fast.
>>
>>2567357
You realize if you worked retail you'd make a little over $200 a week on around 30 hours? (give or take where you live)
$200 in one month isn't an impressive number. It's not something you can live off of. Being able to make enough money to live off of is the dream.

If you live somewhere where you can survive on $200 a month you either don't pay rent (How's your mom's basement?) or live in a shitty area. You have nothing to brag about. Feel good about it, it's still an accomplishment, but it's not worth bragging about yet.
>>
>>2586421
Have you even stopped to think about your own question?
>>
>>2567359
>Get a good amount of people asking why I don't take commissions.

I feel like I can't do it at this moment, I'm definitely not ready to start taking money for work. I think my work is pure junk
