Feel free to post your original works as well if you're trash.

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

I deeply apologize if this was in the sticky and I missed it but I don't think so.
My job forces me to stay in the middle of nowhere in the pacific ocean this summer with a lot of time for myself.
Sadly it also means that resupplies are very rare and getting enough paper to draw 5 hours a day for 6 months might be a problem at times.
Is it possible to start efficiently with a tablet?
Thanks in advance!

The tablets work well enough.
If you've got a decent laptop you can just buy an Intuous pen tablet. (you'll need a pretty good computer for it to work flawlessly, so a shitty laptop wouldn't be good)

Not sure how tactile the touch tablet PC sort of variants go. Check out the Cintiq companion 2, sounds alright.

The sticky rule about tablets is fucking retarded, /g/ doesn't want to talk about that.

How long were those? It looks like you're focusing on contours and detail before getting the gesture down, and in the process ending up with wonky proportions and stiff poses. You should be using landmarks to establish relations between forms and make the pose more accurate, not just for the sake of adding detail.
The sketchy line quality makes the more complex poses like the top right hard to read. Work on paper if you're having trouble putting more confident lines down digitally, practice gestures trying to make as few and as simple lines as possible, and then build on top of that as needed.

/beg/ i have a question

Loomis - Figure Drawing for all its worth

Talking about the "cape" shown in red, how is it comfortable "laid over" the thorax shown in blue? I'm having issues putting the mannequin together and that bit never seems to go quite right. Is there some good way of thinking about it, or just a matter of yet more practice until it starts looking right first time? I've been learning the more detailed mannequin for a couple of days and while the rest of it progresses fine, this one part hasn't been clicking.
>>
>>2548441
Fix all your fundamental face structures before you even think about colour and lighting. Forehead is too big, eyes are symbol drawn, mouth and ears are malformed, shoulders sloping away too steeply, facial features aren't fading away properly given his head turn.
>>
File: lats.jpg (777 KB, 1100x1906) Image search: [Google]
lats.jpg
777 KB, 1100x1906
>>2548478

It will probably help you to gain some more anatomy knowledge. Part of the reason why this is a slightly flawed simplification is that it masses the lats and the shoulder girdle and scapula into a single entity. Whereas, if you look at the lats in isolation you can see that curve nicely round the edges of the thorax and attach at the arms (and they are the main form from which the hood shape is derived).

Essentially, you'll help yourself by studying in detail the actual the parts that Loomis is trying to simplify for you. Just copying his solutions has its limitations. it's certainly a viable strategy to learn to map out of the figure initially, but you'll be well served to enrich your understanding by going back and forward between how you simplify and a intimate study of the composite parts that make up the figure. (and by extension how much real life you can get into those simplifications).

Personally I prefer to think of the upper shoulder and scapula as one object and the lower abdomen and lats as the hood starting lower.

"All things are implicated in one another and in sympathy with each other. This event is the consequence of some other one. Things push and pull on each other, and breathe together, and are one."
>>
>>2548503
Hmm, I see what you're saying, makes a lot of sense. I only started learning a few days ago, and the philosophy I've taken during the approach is to get /pretty/ good at each step before going further - so I start with gesture until that becomes natural and not stiff, then move on to the more detailed skeltal, where I am now, and I don't plan to move on until I can comfortably draw such a skeltal in most natural poses from different angles before moving on to perspective, and anatomy later.
Although you're probably right, part of the slowness in this step is trying to reason with a simplification. I'll give your approach a go and see how it works out, thanks!

Compared to source, eyes are slightly oversized, eyebrows are too high, brow is too pronounced and hair is dramatically oversized. Not sure if this caricaturization was intentional or not.

About 50% of the facial linework is somewhat off. Ear's too short and too wide. General shape of the nose is right, if you don't zoom in, minus the ala, which is quite off. Where the upper end of the nasal bridge curve turns (viewer's) left isn't turning hard enough. Far sides of the upper lip are too thin.

Neck's a little too thick and the line connecting the (her) right side of the neck to the head is curved in the opposite direction. Coat's a fair bit off, but that's not really the focus here.

Overall, for a quick study without bothering with minor detail, it's decent. The anime-esque caricaturization is the biggest inaccuracy by those standards, which you shouldn't be applying when trying to copy the likeness of a real face.

I just aligned your study over the source and played with transparency to write this, which you should do yourself, if you aren't. It's the harshest and most objective study critique you can get.

I was mainly joking around at the fact it looked like you were just starting when I said "I can tell what it all is".

If you're using this time to practice drawing an area from a perspective then you've done okay. It's just painfully obvious that this was done in a rush because it needs tidying up/your shading is noticeably rushed.

It makes a lot more sense if you're practicing getting a grip on perspective and the placement of objects relative to their surroundings. I'd personally focus on drawing objects and getting a feel for how the light falls on them before doing this if you haven't already. It's hard to tell how good you are from this one sketch.

I'm gonna give you a serious reply but warning that some people on this board don't like anime-esque drawings.

The hair looks stuck to the head. I also got into drawing through anime (then onto more realism and stuff) so I also had this issue when I started. To circumvent this you need to:

1) Recognise that those bits of hair "spikes" for the fringe don't stop when they connect to the next, they go all the way back to your hairline, you don't need to draw that but you do need to indicate it.

2) Use shading to show distance.

Body outline needs to be a bit clearer and you should look at some sillhoettes or just pictures of people to get an idea of body types. This shouldn't be that difficult since you have a basic grasp anyway.

The lines in the hair sometimes aren't indicative of anything. The one right in the center above the fringe looks kind of unnecessary. Related to this, the folds in clothes are a bit too much and need to have shading showing shadows made by the folds.

Her collarbone is too strong and should go upwards towards the neck gradually way before it gets to those straps. It's also a bit low. Think about your own collarbone. It connects to your shoulders, it doesn't go straight across your chest. This can be fixed by erasing the edges and just drawing the line going up before it reaches the shoulders.

Piece of the left (my perspective) palm is missing. Right hand is not as good as left hand but you're surprisingly good at hands for a beginner.

Right arm has no indication of where the forearm starts beside a slight bump which I assume is the elbow. This requires shading or some other indication. The wrist is also kind of weird.

The folds above her armpits are hanging too low which is very masculine. These should be less bold and higher up.

Shoulders too large.

Too much indication for knees.

Hair should be darker near the body since you have indications that it's curving inwards which would cause a shadow.
>>
>>2549321

The area of her vagina is kinda uneven. You should further shade in the right side to fix this, but also slightly erase it since I think the area below is way too dark.

Her eyes indicate she's looking straight forward but she has only one ear even though the hair on the left side doesn't appear to be covering an ear.

Other than this you're doing fine for a beginner, great job on the face and upper body.

looks like you screwed up the basic shape of the face anon, maybe try again from scratch focusing more on the basic shaped first. you also seem to be slightly symbol drawinging the features but I can seethereis effo being made to capture their likeness.

when drawing the eyes you dont need to outline them perfectly, for example the upper eyelids that in the photo reference look darker then the lower eyelids, he also ha thin bags underhis eyes which you have overlooked and instead drawn a thick black outline around the whole area.
>>
>>2547997
Got frustrated when drawing the right eye cause I couldn't getting to look the way I wanted so I left it the way it is.

I'd actually recommend drawing anime for beginners. I'd say it goes like this:

Anime drawing > draw a ball and turn it into a sphere with shading > practice perspective > draw something real, with an anatomy book or something for reference.

It's a lot easier to draw a 2D character than it is to draw a 3D person. I think many would give up if they don't get that easy start.
>>
>>2549529
If you're having that much trouble watch this and try it a few times first, should help you out:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9RmHOvmPJjE

The Loomis method can also work here, you just have to account for the face shape when following the instructions. If you use this a few times eventually you'll get a feel for the shape of faces from memory.

It's hard at first. I've read somewhere that the easiest way to practice is to use the tablet for everything. That way you'll get used to it pretty quickly.

youre missing the tilt of the head. pay close attention to the distance between her nose and her lips. Her top lip is too big. pay attention to how her Philtrum forms her lips. and don't half ass the eyes, its main part of the picture. good luck
>>
>>2550020
chill with the chicken scratch lines and slow down a tad.... look at the distance between her nose and the right cheek ( its making her look fatter then she is). her jaw is messed up ( its too small) and all the corners are way to sharp. look at how round her chin is the picture. lastly her face is just overall too small. look at the distance from her eyes to her ears. these are really easy to fix but could've been avoided if you would just slow down. no point in doing this, if your not learning anything.

HB pencil + any paper

Loomis says any pencil that you can make a "convincing" black - meaning you have to easily be able to distinguish the black lines from the rest of the piece, and that you can actually call upon that black line when you need it. Whatever you do, don't get in over your head on making sure you get the "right" tools - as a beginner you should just focus on technique and eye, media can come later

theres a thing called a cone of vision (scott robertsons book) that you're supposed to stay inside of , and keep vanishing points a certain degree apart in relation to where the 'camera' is positioned. so you're right, if you want less distortion, move the vanishing points apart. it's in scott robertsons book which is a must read on perspective

>>2549860

you're thinking of vanishing points the wrong way. look up what happens to a cubes vanishing points as it rotates. and if you want a consistent field of view, you don't vary up the vanishing point degree's between different cubes much at all

So, I've been doing drawabox exercises for about a week and a half now. I think I have really improved a lot so far; things aren't great, but when I started my lines were much much worst.

After about 1000 or so boxes (I did a lot of side research on boxes, mind you), I think I'm starting to kinda get how a box works, but sometimes I get a little tired of boxes.

Since my lines now actually look like I intended them to be straight, I figured I could start checking out some other books on the side, books which I didn't start with because I couldn't get over how bad my lines were, but I wonder if you guys think it's a good idea to start reading something else before finishing all the drawabox lessons (a goal which is months away). Specifically, I was thinking of "fun with a pencil".

tl;dr: is it advised to study multiple books or should I finish one before going into others?
>>
>>2550306

Yeah, I know, and it doesn't help that my lines are so shit. I'm wondering though, why should I drop fun with a pencil?

>>2550568
Maybe you're right. I think I've always had this fear of "following the wrong path", but maybe I should be more open to trying things out early. I guess I'm just worried about picking bad habits if I learn things "out of order".

Something else I wanted an opinion on: I've spent the last hour just doing 20 or so lines with the ghosting technique (my arm hurts, and they're not great), which I think is cool, and I feel good about it, but sometimes I think I could be spending this time studying something that would be more useful, but I don't know, especially since I HAVE been seeing an improvement to my lines. What do you guys think? I've been drawing these lines every single day now, I've got some pages filled with them, but am I focusing on this too much?

The line exercise is merely a warm up. But it's fine to focus it until you don't chicken scratch. Just keep doong what you do. Drawabox has enough resources to keep you busy without a book. Perspective is taught in a fairly quick manner as it relies on you to figure it out through many pages of work. As long as you keep rotating boxes, you can do the same with anatomy and it's all good from there. Advanced perspective isn't all that important until you're already pretty good since it has almost no use in typical sketches.

No point at all. Are you an idiot? Do you know how to manage time? Asking this question and being on this board at all says a lot. Are you trying to run away from your work or something? Focus on those and only those. Don't waste time on useless shit like /ic/. Fleeting motivation is terrible. Be good at what you have now instead. your boxes are incredibly distorted. i think it would help if you drew in 1pt or 2pt grids instead of random boxes floating in space (i recommended how to draw b/c i think the perspective section in drawabox is really really watered down). also, stop worrying about your lines so much. smooth linework come with mileage. imo fun with a pencil helps with construction, but is ultimately useless. that's just my opinion though, it might help you but i definitely didn't need it.
