I have almost zero experience with animation (fucking around with stick pivot years ago) but I know it's a career I want to pursue. Most likely due to nostalgia, I am highly attracted to 2D/traditional, but I'm wondering if it would be a failing field to follow. With today's world riding 3DDick I don't know if I could ever be involved in any big films or something besides anime. I know I would love it, but I don't want to starve to death.

Take the risk, anon.

Your life ends at some point, along with every single question about which career choices are sound according to other people.

No. Even if 2D animated movies were still popular, I doubt you would ever made it, and even if you did, animators were still treated like crap. Your only hope is tv, or like the picture of your opening post, with a kickestarter or something similar.

Are you fucking serious

This is one of the best stop-motion shorts I've ever seen. Her facial features, the movements, the mood:

WHATEVER YOU FIND WORTH YOUR TIME, INVEST TIME AND MONEY IN IT AND FIND OUT HOW IT MAKES YOU FEEL AFTER A WEEK, A MONTH AND A YEAR OF PURSUING IT. YOU CAN ALWAYS QUIT WHENEVER YOU FEEL LIKE IT.

MAYBE YOU WILL ANIMATE INSTEAD OF GETTING DRUNK, MAYBE YOU WILL ONLY ANIMATE WHILE DRUNK.
MAYBE YOU WILL WORK ALONE, MAYBE YOU WILL WORK WITH OTHER PEOPLE WHO SHARE YOUR PASSION.
MAYBE YOU WILL WATCH THE CREDITS OF A SHOW YOU HAVE LIKED WHEN YOU WERE YOUNGER AND UNDERSTAND HOW WHAT YOU DO RELATES TO WHAT ALL THESE NAMES AND JOBS HAVE ADDED TO SOMETHING ENJOYABLE.
MAYBE YOU WILL REACH THOUSANDS, MAYBE YOU WILL HAVE FEVERED FANATICS.

YOUR EXISTENCE IS YOUR OWN, DO WHAT WORKS FOR YOU, BUT NEVER ASK FOR ONE THING: PERMISSION TO FIND HAPPINESS IN AS MANY WAYS AS YOU CAN IMAGINE FOR YOURSELF.
PEOPLE ARE VERY BAD AT DECIDING WHAT'S BEST FOR SOMEONE ELSE AND TEND TOWARDS ADVISING INACTION BECAUSE IT MIRRORS THEIR INABILITY TO DECIDE FOR YOU.

I BELIEVE THE ANIMATOR'S SURVIVAL KIT IS A SOLID FOUNDATION FOR ANIMATION. BUY IT, READ IT, WATCH IT AND START WORKING.

As in I've never animated before...I don't see the problem
>>

>I've never done surgery before
>I want to be a surgeon
You can want to do something you've never done before because it interests you
>>
>>2544190

>As in I've never animated before

then how do you know you want to?

>>2544192
performing surgery to yourself and others without prior study is illegal in any country of the civilized world. it is a practice that requires instruments and a team of specialists to accomplish

drawing is something toddlers will do automatically if they can reach a crayon OP doesn't need a team of 5 professionals behind him to draw, he doesn't need millions worth in equipment and instruments. to claim you care about animation enough to choose it as your career whilst having zero experience in the craft means you are either trolling or simply retarded.
>>
>>2544209
Okay, well use a different example. What if someone really responds to music and loves the sound of a piano, but has never played. They decide they love piano so much they will go to school to learn how to do it. What's so crazy about that?
>>
>>2544183
I agree with this anon. OP you should actually try to animate for a while before saying stuff like this. Do you understand what it takes? It's not for everyone. It's incredibly tough and time consuming you need to love and I mean really LOVE it if you want to make it your career. You have zero experience, fix this.
>>
>>2544224
You can't get a piano easily, but you can get get pen and paper. I don't think the guy really feels passionate if he didn't try something you could have been done in a notebook.
>>
Not gonna make it.

>>2544228
its right. it will cost you nothing to try animating by hand and it will be a good task for you.
also 2d animation is actually a field which is payed less and less since media os overwhelmed by anime and 3d stuff. even 2d films are nowadays done in 3D and its growing more and morde. i assume due to your nostalgia you choose animating, but it will end up at you learning 3d stuff etc. you need to coneptuate films and characters first since this is the basis of all animation.
i'm an animator myself but more active in graphic and motion design. i like traditional 2d animation films and there will always be a field for 2d animators but its quite shitty payed but as many anons said: if you think it fulfills you and its worth your time you should do it
>>
>>2544209
Because I understand how it works and I'm going to practice it for a while before I get a job to see if I like it.
>>2544228
That was the plan
>>2544661
What would you say the average salary/income for 2d animators would be?
>>
>>2544111
>I know I would love it
Well, the only thing that exists is anime
>but I don't want to starve to death.
Then tough luck. Nobody pays animators what they deserve. It's all 3D shit now
>>
>>2544729
>The only thing that exists is anime
My favorite show is Rick and Morty
>>
>>2544661
>overwhelmed by and 3d stuff.
But everything in animation was destined to culminate in 3D. Even back during Disney's golden age they would physically build background/foreground cutouts, line them up, take a picture, and then animate on top of it. Nowadays we do the same thing for "2D" movies and the only difference is we can use software instead.

>>2544679
I don't think there's really a difference between 2D and 3D pay anymore, as most 2D animations are actually animated in 3D. 2D probably pays less than 3D, google agrees. Somewhere around 40k~ a year.

I understand you though, OP. Drawing has been the only thing I've ever actually felt passionate about, but I don't like illustration or the fine arts. I'm starting my associate's degree in 3D animation next semester.

Not sure if 3D animation is exactly what I want to do, but the degree involves a ton of classes that look super fun, story boarding/animatics, 2D/3D animation, and normal drawing/figure drawing/color classes. Hopefully while I'm there I can really nail down exactly what I want to do and make friends with professors and just overall ask them every question I have.
>>
>>2544661
What program do you use to display traditional 2d animation? Like you scan it and stuff right? Then put it through some movie maker, I assume to be able to adjust timing and such. I only have regular printer paper, but I don't really know how else I can see it animated aside from flipping through the pages.
