Hands are wonky and I kinda have trouble getting the right amount of contrasts into the entire picture.

Rendering is super scary to me too. That's why so much of this is kinda blurry.

it looks as if you spent considerably more time/ effort on the face, put that quality throughout the whole piece. your shading in the face looks very intentional, where as on the arms and such it looks rushed and scribbley. also, the shading scribbles in the background are very distracting. nice one tho!

What I meant was people are very unrealistic in their expectations of skill progression. But you're right in thinking for a months or possibly a year or so your art won't get a second glance in the big leagues.

how do I learn about color for real? I've read a lot of little guides about hue and hot/cold and lighting but every time I come to pick colors and try to make skin or anything look good it turns out terrible.

I just don't get it.
>>
>>2513624
paint from life or images
>>
>>2513624
Skin is the single hardest thing to color. You have to deal with extra problems specific to it, such as subsurface scattering, hue variation in face zones, etc. Our brains are excellent at recognizing humans, so you'll only have shitty skin paintings and very good skin paintings, while a merely decent painting of anything else (say, an apple) is still gonna look decent rather than shit.

Don't start with skin. Start with simple objects.
>>
>>2513634
makes me sad cause I finally got somewhat "decen"t (or better than horrible) at drawing waifu heads and wanted to give them some life.
>>
>>2513635
Well, you're in luck, because waifu heads aren't the same thing at all.

You wanna look for guides on stylized coloring for that. The alternative art thread had a youtube video on coloring waifus two days ago, it's still there.

To make "cartoony" coloring look decent, you can get away with using as few as three tones. A warm diffuse light, a warm shadow, and a cool/white highlight. Use a soft brush to shade core shadows, and a hard brush to shade cast shadows.

You can definitely get fancier and bring relative hue/saturation to areas of the face, certain shadows, etc. but when I look at the average weeb shit on sites like danbooru none of them are doing anything particularly complicated.

If you think you're fucking up and aren't sure why, post your stuff here and I'll try to figure it out with you.

If the brow line is not parallel to the ground (which is what I assume this is), you need to make sure the other features are showing more of their bottom plane to push that we are looking at a non-parallel browline. Which you didn't.

I quite like the idea behind this as a tower of babel. From a design standpoint, what is the purpose of the red light? Why is her head a beak-shape? In what way does this mesh with the idea of why the actual story of why the tower of babel was actually created?

I know you weren't putting effort in but things like these are fun to think about.

Also you mightj want to think about a higher PPI.

i need help

im doing a drawing course on eyes and im supposed to draw eyes from reference in roughly 5 minutes

I constantly make mistakes, and I could get a decent eye, but it would probably take me an hour of drawing and erasing constantly, which is insane.

I'm trying to draw the socket first and brows, then the eye ball, the place the lid over the ball, then the iris and pupil.

pic related took me 12 minutes. im feeling really frustrated. I've been repeating the exercise without much improvement. I always end up symbol drawing unless i go EXTREMELY slow.

are you doing vIlppus nma head course?

>>
>>2514340

>>
>>2514343
i got quick at drawing in life drawing classes, and now i also do those timed figure drawing videos on new masters academy daily. Set a timer for 5 minutes and stop drawing once the timer finishes, then move onto the next pic. Just grind it and resist symbol drawing and you'll get somewhere
>>
>>2514350

Ill try it. How long can I use the same references? I don't want it to become a memory exercise over observation
>>
>>2514357
I try not to use the same reference twice. Been through all the nma timed videos, now i'm going through the image gallery using my phone as a timer...yeah having it turn into a memorisation exercise seems like a bad idea.
>>
>>2514361

How do you evaluate yourself? Just compare it to the reference? or do you always get crit?
>>
>>2514363
Ah..like i check the reference to make sure it's captured it. But mostly like making sure it makes sense in 3d space, playing with linework to see how it effects how the image reads, making sure the gesture is good. It's kinda gay, but listening to how my brain feels about what i've drawn and wether it reads as a decent figure or 3d object to my mind. Like all the masters work just clicks in your head as an obviously 3d object, which is what i'm working on atm. Putting things up for crit now and again is good, like old mate showed me the proportion errors i had which i was blind to. Dunno.
>>

As a beginner, most of the time it's not the best idea. -especially- if your gestures are not as fluid as they should be.

>Pic related is sadly way better than when I copy from quick poses
[citation needed]

Seriously, these don't seem like they could even really count as gesture drawings. Save for the middle of the three rightmost poses, which has some flow, everything else is very stiff, to a degree that you're effectively drawing the tentative position of *limbs* and nothing more.

The best advice I can give you is to drop the idea of constructing a body altogether. Across those drawings, I notice you're consistently giving your figures a body consisting of three boxes (chest and pelvis, joined by a middle box)and having limbs that come out of the shapes' corners. The one drawing where you didn't do that, and actually have a leg flow as an extension of the body's "central" curve (the contrapposto), happens to be the best one because you don't have boxes and sticks constraining your gestures.

I would strongly encourage you at least post some of the gestures you drew from reference if you want feedback, and a better understanding of what gesture drawing involves. I'm not terribly good at gesture drawing myself, but if you show me some drawings along with their references, I can try to show you some of the flow you might be missing or not searching for properly.

I keep drawing those boxes so my brain can under what the pose is supposed to be doing. I want it to look as close to a real like body as possible
I know that is wrong but when I see the pros do gestures they look so close to the real thing and I keep making a conscious effort to do just that
When I draw gestures without the boxes I can hardly understand whats going on in the pose that I'm trying to replicate
Hope this makes sense honestly

Because I think you did such a good job rendering the skin comparatively, I should point out that you'll get better result if you don't draw every single strand of hair with the same amount of detail. You wanna pick one or two areas where the texture of your hair is most intense (on her right side, just above the hairline, as well as the loose strands covering her ear, which sadly won't pop because your values aren't dark enough) and add definition around these parts the most. The rest should be rougher, and hint at the texture.

Your poses are much too stiff
Your shading is completely inaccurate and doesn't create the illusion of volume thus all your picture look flat.
The spine of the man in the top picture is completely inaccurate. It simply does not move that way.

>>2514543
Gesture drawing should be kept as simple as possible while retaining the action of the pose. Remember, the action is what's most important, not the contour nor details.
Focus on only drawing C curves, S curves and straight lines. This is an easy way to stop you from drawing detailed contour.
Don't chicken scratch. Make sure your lines are bold and controlled.

I've been practicing circles for a week now, and I still feel like a cripple trying to draw them.

I want to set a goal, do X pages of circles by Y date, and see how much I've improved. but I'm worried that I'll do it, and come out having not improved at all, and that'll just demotivate me a lot.

Should I try to set a goal and risk getting bummed out?
>>

Don't bother doing nothing but circles for X weeks/months.
Just make it a habit to warm up everyday with couple of pages of circles from the shoulder.

>>
>>2515303
>I'm worried that I'll do it, and come out having not improved at all, and that'll just demotivate me a lot.

That's a bullshit mindset that will get you nowhere. Set goals, reach them, feel good about it, repeat. That's it. Do it one page at a time if you have to. I wouldn't grind ellipses for days. If they're giving you trouble make a conscious effort to practice them for a couple pages every day. Don't torture yourself.

It's understandable to have trouble with specific things, and ellipses are universally considered hard to draw. I'm guessing you're doing drawabox exercises; do the rest of them too. One exercise that helped me a lot (from the book "Freehand Drawing and Sketching") is to draw spirals. Start from the inside and work your way out, keeping them as tight as you can while keeping them smooth and not letting the line cross over itself. The increasing diameter and no clear target forces you to draw from the shoulder and really feel the curves you're trying to hit. It's also a nice exercise because you can see a clear progression in the tightness and smoothness of your spirals.

Shoulders are stiff, even for an upright pose. Try out gesture drawing?

You shouldn't need half a dozen lines a quarter-inch apart to define a ribcage. Forcing yourself to work with individual lines (straight lines and c-curves) will give flow to your drawing, which will help it look more natural and lively.

Your ribcage also begins too high, it's supposed to start at the pit of the neck for a front view.
>>
>>2515384
i tried gesture drawing but it was really hard without knowledge in anatomy. It ended up just being me copying the contours.

I mostly just want to get the upper body right before moving to full on motion and full body.

Also aren't the shounders in the ref pretty blocky anyway?

So I am trying to color the legs here, am I doing this right or is there a way to make it smoother? I know it isn't 100% correct at the moment and will fix later but is this some what correct in terms of blending? Would appreciate some tips.
>>
>>2515387
The shoulders are blocky, but there's a flow to them. It would be a lot easier to capture if you could draw the hands, because they terminate the flow lines (you had to stop yours at your wrists so you couldn't properly display those lines). I wouldn't stress too much though, when you're starting out any kind of practice is good, even if you can't nail every element.

Gesture drawing is a pain if you don't understand basic anatomy. But longer drawing studies are also going to suffer if you don't understand gesture. It's kind of a catch-22, but honestly I think you just gotta focus on whichever you feel is weakest, and then jump between gesture, proportion and anatomy while purposely trying to improve each a little.

If you're a complete newbie any kind of progress is good. I also felt like I couldn't benefit properly from gesture drawing until I understood how torsos worked and how limbs were articulated. (even though that's not the point of gesture lol)

Use a big, soft brush? This was done in roughly a dozen brushstrokes (mostly to mix different colors), there's no need to blend everything with hundreds of strokes if all you want is to have a smooth blending.

Also, remember to zoom out and look at a smaller version of your picture to see where your shading bands.

I've found doing it in color actually makes it look more metallic, since you can capture the reflections a lot more easily (IE the stuff on the top reflects the sky, stuff on bottom reflects grass, etc). I think the big thing though is just have at least one or two things that visibly reflect on the armor, it just gives a clear indication to the viewer "that shit's reflective."

Not sure about black iron, though, and obviously if it's dirty/rusty/tarnished it'll be less reflective too.

Seeing a hand like that means you aren't drawing what you're seeing and both books handle that subject very well. Enjoy the journey anon

>>
>>2516159
line berth?
>>
>>2516143
this sounds like such a cliche on this board but, chickenscratching. You're not being as accurate with the forms as you like and letting the varying shifting strokes trick your brain into seeing the most pleasing shape automatically as well and letting the lines control your hand too much when you start using smaller strokes (see: raised forearm). You also need to train your eye a bit more to draw what you see instead of what you think you're seeing (whenever you catch yourself looking at the paper too long, look at your reference and review what you just drew in the seconds prior), example: the spacing between the obliques and the abs is not properly represented and instead condensed into an outline of the abs alone. Notice the serratus anterior in your drawing, you used delicate and unconfidant lines since you draw what you see somewhat however you arent giving proper respect to the accuracy of your proportions (proportions do not automatically refer to the proportions of the human body)

please please please remember that the goal of a study isnt to copy an image as accurately as you can, it's to learn as much as you visually can about the subject you're studying and apply it to your own work. That's why it's a STUDY. You want to be as accurate as possible because you want to absorb everything you can from the subject.

I'm not that anon, but the main things that stick out are that a) the proportions aren't right (chest, arms, parts of the skull, legs) and that b) the shading is off. (Your shading on parts like the neck piece are individually good, but as a whole it looks wrong/off).

It definitely comes off as something done 100% from construction. It would have benefited a lot more from making heavy use of referencing and studies.

The concept itself is quite nice and you're definitely getting there in your sense of linework and light/dark levels though.
>>
>>2514339
You're thinking too symbolically. Don't try to draw what an eye should look like, but draw what shapes you see. Based off the photo, the pupils should actually be bordering the tops of the eyes, and the bottom of the eye has more curvature to it than you drew.

Also its not going to look really realistic until you start adding tone to it. The line drawing will always seem kind of off.

You mind if I copy your style btw? I quite like it.

I'm not that anon, but to summarise; It's like him trying to tackle a Lvl.30 boss for 8 hours when he's just Lvl.7 saying "I'm just trying to learn how to down it".
He just ain't at that level yet and he's better off killing small fry first (quantity > quality). I'm not saying that he shouldn't learn to color but smaller projects would be more beneficial for him at the moment.

You're right about the detail. I'll try to keep that in mind for the rest of the drawing.
copy the style, by all means! I used fineliner to outline and detail and a simple shadow with pencil.

Why do beginners love mediocre/crappy deviantart tutorials so much? My pet theory is that they feel more accessible than books and tutorials with actually good art. They look at those chicken scratchy lines, the wonky anatomy, the lack of perspective, the weird proportions, and go "hey I could do that!" and feel motivated to draw. If the looked at some Vilppu stuff they'd feel like they would have no idea to accomplish something like that at all. Any other theories?

>My pet theory is that they feel more accessible
It's exactly this. That's also why Jazza is so popular - he makes it seem easy, whereas most other guides on YouTube expect a basic knowledge to fully understand them. Most beginners are extremely intimidated by the flood of stuff they need to know (fundamentals) and don't know where to start or what to practice first. Also most beginners don't want to draw basic forms and practice basic perspective first, as it's not what they want to do (stylized drawings), so they look for the easiest route to achieve it. Last keep in mind that most beginners don't have the knowledge to estimate what's most useful or how good an artist is. That's also the reason why folks like Sakimichan are seen as some sort of art gods, while, compared to other professionals, they're not that special at all.

tl;dr A lot of beginners want fast results with minimal effort.

That, and also they just don't want to draw realism; they want to draw simple anime. Why bother learning the muscles of the forearm if they're never going to use them?

Eh, I think there's a lot you can learn from spending 8 hours on coloring something, and 8 hours is just 1 day's worth of work at most. It's fine really.

Im having trouble getting into drawing something beyond just doodles. I want to create something with depth, but something is holding me back. I've tried sticking with simple objects like swords from games i like, but i can't seem to even get into those before giving up not even 10% into the drawing.

pretty much, teachers that make things look easy tend to be way more popular than teachers that actually teach. That's just another downside of the massive anarchy that is the internet, it's hard for newbies to find gems among all the garbage. But still, anybody who learned some basic common sense and critical thinking from a young age will probably turn out okay in the long run.

>Feel more accessible

Incorrect, if you read the very first thing on that tutorial it perpetuates that you are a special snowflake where everything you do is okay and that there are no such things as a bad drawing or mistakes and that everyone draws differently otherwise known as muh style.

It is this sugarcoating and pseudo-boost of self esteem that attracts the majority of these overgrown sheltered babies for a lack of better term. As a consequence we have a vast majority of one trick ponies who feel entitled to praise and recognition and when someone points out their flaws they get defensive and retort.

Even people who are "naturals" worked to aquire their skills. You want to build a car when you haven't taken the time to learn how to tighten a screw. Just give up on life please.
