does anyone have tips for doing a halftone gradient by hand?

does anyone have tips for doing a halftone gradient by hand? Like I typed into Google "how to do halftone gradient by hand" and all the results came up with instructions for Illustrator or Corel.

That looks awesome and I'm bookmarking that for a future project, but what I need for this project is a much larger scale and I'm wanting to just do it by hand with a pen.

Because I find repetitive tedious stuff like that to be relaxing and meditative. I'm just wondering how people did it back in the day before digital graphic design.
