I am becoming 27 in a month and I've barely picked up a pen since I was in elementary school. I can't afford fancy wacom tablets, I have depression, I need to get a job or start school, I should deal with my weight and stillborn social life, and I have little motivation.
All I want to do is draw porn and design characters. Is it too late for me?
>>
You think random strangers on the internet can make your life decisions for you better than you can?
>>
>>2488613

never too late, brah, and all you need is the cheapest pencil and paper you can find, but usually when people are depressed failures they tend not to stick with anything so I don't know if you should bother if you aren't concerned with improving anything else about your life.

Never too old OP. Some people don't start drawing till their 70's. Read the sticky, get a pencil and scrap paper (or a cheap sketchbook if possible) and get to grindin away to get gud. Im 24 and i just started last fall. Live the dream amigo.

blog?
>>
>>2488616
Considering who I am, kind of, I know that sounds self-deprecating but I have a hard time with motivation and taking decisions.

>>2488617
So printer paper and pilot pen? I understand that depressed people don't improve much, knowing myself I think nothing is going to happen, but I still want to know my options and at least have the possibility for it to happen.
>>
No its not too late. Being in your late 20s is still considere young for the industry even if you're just a beginner.

Just know you're gonna get shit on a lot. And if depression is already your excuse, quit now.

No way, don't be so pessimistic. Depression pushes a lot of people to become masters of their hobbies. What you need to remember is that learning to draw well is like learning any other subject well, it really comes down to objective decision-making on a really small scale. A depressed person can do that just as well as anyone else as long as they have the focus to understand it after a while

I can already tell OP has a lack of self-discipline and if his(?) interests in art are only to draw smut he's also an idealist. There's no way this man(?) will muster up the energy or dedication to get good at anything let alone art.
>>
>>2488665
>he's also an idealist.
I'm curious how you inferred that?
>>
>>2488665
can you even make money online drawing smut art? I talking about enough money that you could live of comfortably..

There's a few who can, mostly furries.

im guessing mostly people making some money would be freelance concept artist or something? And few like Sakamichan or whatever the fuck his nickname is

My thoughts exactly.

this man said "I have a hard time with motivation and taking decisions"

he needs to fix that before committing to art
>>
>>2488613
If you have no motivation and depression, art will only make it worse, mate.

But yes, it's never to late, you just need a lot of motivation and can't afford to procrastinate too much.
"outsiders" often highly underestimate artists and the amount of work it takes to be a professional, it's extremely difficult and exhausting, especially mentally. Most of the time it's not gonna be fun if you're just starting out, it's gonna be very hard work, drawing and studying focused every day for at least 5 hours (depending on your situation, but if you're a neet, you should do more than 5 hours).

Making it in porn art is especially difficult because you need to make a huge following. You need not only be great at art, you need to be a master marketing guy, pandering to a particular group, being great at making people love you. if you just find 2d porn hot and want to make your own, that's fine, but only that is not gonna give you money.

I've been clinically depressed for years and art has only made it worse. Not art itself, but my attempt at making it my profession. So I really hope you're gonna find some sort of back up plan because too many novices end up wanting to kill themselves after they realize becoming a professional commercial artist is not what they had expected. It's a job after all. Get a shitty retail job or whatever you can handle and draw whenever you can.

I'm also drunk so sorry for any typos or nonsense
>>
>>2488696
My intention is only to do it as a hobby, and I agree that it would be best to deal with my personal problems first.
>>
>>2488698
I think a few people are misunderstanding, I don't want to do anything professional and make a living off it. Or am I misunderstanding you?
>>
>>2488696
after doing something for 20-30days, it becomes routine, so continue doing are after that point you wont need to motivation, instead of playing video games you will start doing art, and honestly theres like 0.1% that you will become someone good, and thats a low chance, but its still far better then playing video games and doing absolutely nothing. You think being 30y is to old to start doing art? 60-70y artist still do art until the day they die, start doing art now in 10-20years you might be a master and suddenly everyone admiring you and shit.

>I am becoming 27 in a month and I've barely picked up a pen since I was in elementary school.

Same here, I'm 27 right now anon and I just recently decided to git gud

>I can't afford fancy wacom tablets,

I got a cheap shit tablet for my birthday and started to draw with that, try a goodwill or some second hand store or the Internet.

>Depression

Have you tried Dopamine dietary supplements? they might help get rid of the cloud over your head if you haven't decided to talk a shrink yet. They're also cheap so it's not a big gamble if you don't like them.

>I need to get a job or start school

Do you live with your parents? either way you need to try and find a job, yeah if your resume sucks it's gonna be hard but you have to keep looking, imo a lack of school/job makes you feel directionless so see if you can start doing one or the other if not both.

>I should deal with my weight and stillborn social life, and I have little motivation.

Don't overwhelm yourself m8, tackle what you're up to tackle now then gradually add more as you go. Doing everything at once will just stress you out and more depressed.

>All I want to do is draw porn and design characters. Is it too late for me?

If you give up before you start, yes. So get up brah, you're only gonna make it if you allow yourself to brah,

As someone who is depressed and overweight and started a year before you.

Grind the fundamentals as best you can. Drawabox, learn anatomy from books like Artistic Anatomy by Dr Paul Richer and then once you finished that go on Gerge Bridgeman anatomy books.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k3Al7QAS89s
Here is a good video on learning on your own.

You don't need a fancy wacom tablet, for the first few months you can use cheap pen(not pencil) on paper, then get a cheap bamboo tablet.

You should look at getting a job. Maybe look at warehouse work.

Maybe this is me, but I wouldn't work on your lack of social life and depression. Just eat less and maybe do couch to 5k to lose some weight

My life is pretty much do wake up at 6am, grind 2 and half hours, work 8 hours in a boring office job, grind from 6:30pm to 11:30 and then go to bed. Grind 32 hours on the weekend. On holidays I just grind 16 hours a day.

I'm planning to make it in the next four years.

Lets face it the only way you gonna catch someone with 10 years experience is to do more work than them.

>>2489659

Your describing me except I was trying to get a social life at the time. Bit depressing thinking about it. All that time trying to get a social life and lose virginity and end up depressed.

Now stuck in a soul sucking job and still no social life. Anyway, back to grinding fundamentals.

Hey friend!

It's never too late to start art, it's always rewarding to pick up something new, in spite of or even because of the fact that it's so difficult. Making it a habit will make it a lot easier, even if you can only draw for 15 minutes a day, make sure you do those 15 minutes every single day and pretty soon you'll be instinctively drawing all the time.

Also, speaking as someone who's had 4 family members/close friends hospitalized for depression in the past year alone, make sure you see a doctor about it, if you haven't already. Depression is very serious but it isn't insurmountable, and I want you to make sure you get the help you need!

Good luck, and go pick up a pencil and paper right now and start drawing!
>>
>>2488613
It is never too late, OP! Focus on your health first though, and the motivation and discipline to get really good at art will follow.
>>
>>2488702
Well geez OP, if it's only a hobby then of course it's not too late! How would it ever be too late if all you wanna do is just draw smut on the side? You don't even need that long to get good at that, if you stay on it and draw everyday you should be passable in a year, and fairly decent in two.
>>
>>2488613
fuck frank cho
theres nothing wrong with saggy tits
>>
But why the fuck does it have to be porn for fucks sakes?!
>>
>>2488613
It can never be to late.
If you draw and enjoy it, then you have already succeeded. The level at which you draw will improve as you learn to look at the world in new ways. Probably the biggest being planes and prospectives. It's pretty incredible when you notice the world in front of you is not flat and how objects change in relation to your perspective.
>>
>>2489750

this is pretty true, it's incredible to me that I could have gone my whole life without seeing the world in this way.
>>
you literally only need printer paper and a pencil everything else falls between the useful and conveninent if anything get some color pencils or some cheapo crayola watercolors. i really only use my tablet when i have time but thanks to my weird as fuck schedule its really only in the middle of the night.
>>
You're never ever gonna git gud while suffering from depression and lacking motivation. Won't happen.
>>
>>2489750
>It's pretty incredible when you notice the world in front of you is not flat and how objects change in relation to your perspective.

If this is something you had to learn, there's probably something wrong with you.
>>
>>2488613
If you're posting a stupid ass thread like this at your age, then yes, you are too old to do anything worthwhile with your life. Quit now.
>>
>>2488630
fucking really? Is this some new meme?
>>
Anon just don't rush either too lazy
Art is taking a long time
When i was absolutely piece of crap i feel discouraged yeah, and i'm still shit and drawing fucking loomis shit but fuck other people, make a art only you can draw and study
draw easiest thing first (not fucking loomis)
>>
Find good drugs and medicate. Even if your delusional you might be happier and more creative or better yet off your ass.

Why does it rustle your jimmies so? Get over it.
>>

>I can't afford fancy wacom tablets

If you haven't drawn since elementary, you don't need to be worrying about this. Get your drawing skills down. Get good. And when (and IF) you're ready to move to digital, get a tablet.
>>
Than do it.
I draw for myself for almost 10 years now and i never really uploaded my stuff somewhere.
Most important thing is that you have fun doing it.
>>
>>2488613
>stillborn social life now

You will have close to none if you are truly serious about studying.
>>
Drawing isn't fun for me, but maybe it might be fun if I wasn't shit. So I should at least try, right?
>>
>>2493597
keep in mind it takes like a year to start to not be shit
>>
>>2488613
Never too late. It may not come to you as easily as it would to a kid or a freakishly talented person, but as long as you can draw lines you can practice and improve more and more.

It's never too late there's no age restriction that stops you from ever trying to get better. Just pick up a pencil and constantly try to improve your craft.

> I have depression

Boo hoo. You're probably depressed because you keeping making excuses like that. Just fucking do it. The most common advice for easy ways to combat depressive tendencies: exercise, healthy diet, creative hobbies, and socialization.

'But those are why I'm depressed' you say! Tough shit. Go for a walk, cook some food (lightly seasoned chicken breast with rice is cheap and easy), work on something (draw faggot), go to a cafe (listen to conversations in between reading or something, it helps in a lot of ways.) Everything sucks at first. Including being social and healthy. Feeling sorry for yourself is just wallowing in depression and feeds back into itself. Medication helps sometimes, but if your lifestyle is depressing you the only guarantee is to fix it.

And who cares if it's 'too late' to start art? Why not just learn anyway? You aren't doing anything better at the moment. Are you afraid you won't live up to your fantasies of being an idol? Get over yourself. Earn it. When you die at least you can say that you tried to live.
>>
>>2488613

You should see a Dr. about how you are feeling really.
>>
>>2494471
This is solid advice despite being rude, you could've worded it better.

It's true that you just have to force yourself to do shit when you have depression. If it's severe, get some pills. i've been having depression for at least 5 years and nothing helps more than being productive.
>>
>>2490128
Must people don't give it any real thought, is what he means I think. Actually taking the time to notice it and take it in is a little different.
>>
>>2494682

Yeah, I meant to be harsh but that came off with more frustration than I intended. I've seen too many people fall victim to completely externalizing their solutions, whether it's to medication or something else, and never getting better to not get a bit rash about the whole thing. I've gone through periods of worthless depression as well, so I guess that crept in also.

That's not to say that all depressive qualities (and their ilk) can be waved away with hard work. But hard work won't hurt. Doing stuff, real stuff not DotA tier grind-labor, feels good in a basic way, helps with all forms of art, and slowly reintegrated you into society. It doesn't have to be all or nothing. I still binge watch stupid, weeb-shit anime, but hedonism unending becomes more pain than pleasure.

PS
Remember to keep expectations reasonable. No 'I'll get famous and rich from art/anything and then escape this sad life,' keep it 'I'm going to learn how to make this face look more like reality,' or 'I'd like to produce a couple pages of a graphic novel each month.' Don't teeter into 'and then that will sell well and and and.' Read some Camus and take joy in the effort itself, because any other way lies denial and unhappiness.
