We used to have character design challenge threads all the time where OP would post an interesting photo and then we'd draw something loosely based on that.

This muh free work paranoia is really ruining what used to be the best part about /ic/, the challenges and study threads.

On a serious note its a good way to improve and get critiques on your character designing abilities.
Its one thing to guess what they were going for when they post their image, its another to compare it to a topic (set by the OP) and see how they came to their design, as well as letting them see how other people go about it.
These type of threads are very beneficial to artists looking to improve their character designing skills as well as other topics depending on what the subject is.
