Study Western masters. Araki drew heavily from Italian artists like Da Vinci and Michelangelo.
Look at fashion magazines and draw from them too.

Are you being sarcastic?

Araki drew his first manga for a friend when he was about 10 years old. He's 55 now. So my advice is to draw for 45 years, and to work non-stop day in and day out for around 30 of them.

He still looks like he could be my nephew

Definitely disagree, symbol drawing is a thing, but claiming Araki suffers from it is pure unfiltered shitposting.

Symbol drawing essentially means drawing from imagination without being good at it.

I think symbol drawing comes as a side-effect of how we take in visual information and break it down into concepts to make it easier for our brains to understand. It's the same reason why we're able to read text in different fonts without a problem, without having to look at the individual differences in each character first.

'Symbol drawing' is the most forced meme on /ic/
>>2457255
Its not a side effect, its called not knowing how to draw.
People can't draw hands because they don't know what hands look like, not because some mythical "symbol drawing"
>>2457388
you sound like one of those no-progress autists
>>2457423
I'm just tired of that stupid meme.
>b-but once I tried to get rid of symbol drawing I got better!
no, you started wanting to git gud so you practiced and got better.
Stop calling shit symbol drawing and just call it shit.

You know exactly what people mean when they talk about 'symbol drawing'.
By definition of 'symbol', you could call any drawing a symbol, or a series of symbols, or a complex symbol.
In case you're not trolling, what people mean by symbol drawing is when an artist uses flat shapes in attempt to describe form, instead of using 3d forms(or the illusion of) to describe form.
Everyone knows what human hands look like, but not everyone knows how complex forms come together to shape them.
>>2457439
>what people mean is that its flat
no, because people call it flat when its flat.
people call it symbols when its bad.
if people want to say its using flat shape they should say they're not constructing it with 3d shapes.
