I'm usually astonished by the enormous difference in referenced and non-referenced art among artists who rely on reference.
For artists who primarily rely on their imagination, the opposite is true. They can draw well from their imagination, but are able to draw effortlessly from life/reference as well.

you're asking the wrong question.
It's not what brushes did he use. But what brush strokes did he do to get this kind of look.
But the brush was probably square not round and edges were soft but not airbrush. So either wet edges or just opacity. Try it out.
I think the most important thing that he did here is to not blend with the brush. By that i mean he put the color down. Picked the color, removed the stroke and put it again, this time with the color he wanted at full opacity.
If blending was used, he probably put the stroke on an other layer and reduced the opacity.

sometimes it's 3am and you're just barely keeping the stylus in your hand. You give up for the night and come back to it in the morning, but then when you look at it, you get sick of it, so you touch up for literally 5 minutes, throw a light filter, fill the background and stick it up.
