Van Gogh did his first painting at the age of 27, u good 2 go mate
>>
>>2399382
I have no experience at all, and I can't draw for shit. It's always something I wanted to get into like most forms of art though.
>>
>>2399382
I have little experience, I do like drawing and i want to make money from it.

before you die, given you die of old age? yes

>i want to make money from it.
by when you are 23? no. 24? no. 25? no. 26? maybe, how much can you sacrifice?
>>
>>2399388
Oh, I don't want money from it. I just want to try to be great at something especially with art.
>>
>>2399388
Why so late tho? Cant you try really hard and get first shekels in a year or two?
>>
>>2399375
just give it a go whats the problem? do you need fucking approval from some random strangers on internet?

I started later than you and im fine.
>>
You can start at any age really, just be prepared for 3-5 years of daily drawing/painting for hours on end to become highly skilled. If you're okay with that and have the time/resources to allocate then it's all good.
>>
>>2399391
yeah you've got plenty of time

>>2399393
It takes lots and lots and lots and lots of practice. Fucks come here all the time like "hey /ic/, i have really good work ethic and I'm smart. What's the route to being good? I know most people are just dumb or lazy, but not me! I'm willing to do whatever it takes, as long as I can be john singer sargent tier by tomorrow."

The answer is that you basically have to dedicate your life to it.
>>
>>2399384
This. And he sucked absolute dick at it for the next several years. Also very few people saw all those paintings and only his brother wasn't completely negative about it, he was just like "meh". He was poor as fuck and still dedicated his time to painting even when he was shit and nobody appreciated his paintings.

OP, you are more than good to go.

>>2399393
Yeah, imho if you are able to focus on the practice, organize it well so that you hit all the things you need to learn and dedicate couple of hours of focused and effective practice every day, you can get to a very good level within 2 years.
>>
>>2399375

you totally can, i started at 20, never hold a pencil before, after 1 year drawing maybe 20 hours a week i started to like what i draw, just go for it. i remember when i was 13-14 i thought "meh i can't start this or that its too late", stupidest thought i ever had. just fcking go for it
>>
>>2399406
That's the problem though, coming up with a gameplan for yourself is hella hard if you are a beginner, I myself have no clue what to focus on and there's so much of everything I can't help but feel a bit overwhelmed.
>>
>>2399418
Care to show us something?
>>
>>2399375
if you enjoy it and are willing to put work in to it, it doesn't matter when you start

>>

holy moly, thanks for sharingu
>>
>>2399403
I'm not lazy at all but dumb as fuck, is there a chance for be to git gud? not op btw
>>
>>2399375
This question is and always will be retarded, if you want to draw you just do it. No, drawing doesn't take 80 years to become good at, but you must expect progress accordingly to way you learn and time you dedicate to honing your skills. If you're going to die tommorow then you'r pretty late, I'm sorry.
>>
>>2399375
Are you alive ?
Do you want to ?
Fucking do it then.
There are no " lost causes ", don't be weak willed.
>>
>>2399375

Anon, as long as you rule out having a wife and kids, you can achieve anything in relatively short time.
>>
>>2399393

Have you seen the furry/scalie community?

They spend all their money on comissions. Draw furry porn. Those people will eat it up, regardless of quality.

If you didn't start by the age of 6 then you have no chance. Enjoy your wagecuck life ;)

>Van Gogh did his first painting at the age of 27, u good 2 go mate

Yes he started PAINTING at that age, but he was already drawing and interested in art from a young age, the hardest part was behind him.
>>
>>2399895
Not appreciating the subtle lighting, delicate sculptural strokes, modest use of colour and eye-leading composition.

Yeah you're right, maybe if we photobash some toasters and rifles onto them, throw in some lens-flares and and neon strips it will really sing.
>>
Well, I was 23 when I started and couldn't draw stick figures, but now I can safely say I could easily draw that stupid fucking duck you posted.

It depends on what you want, what you need, and how hard you're willing to work to find yourself somewhere in the middle hating yourself enough to give up, but you can't because you're almost there, and then you'll start to truly hate yourself and improve, but at that point you'll never truly like your own work no matter how good you get which will keep you improving whether you like it or not. At that point you'll start making money and keep at it because you'd rather draw than flip burgers for fat faggots all day at a Mcjob.

Then you'll pick up another hobby... sharpening knives, growing cannabis, building PCs, cooking... or something.
>>
>>2399375
Listen m8, unless you're so old your muscles have started to not work you'll be fine.

This doesn't have to be a bad thing.

Hitting the viewer right on the head with "LOOK AT WHAT THIS IS" isn't always the best course of action.

This.

Sargent made many subtle paintings. It makes for an intresting experience when you have to look deep into the paining to recognize hints at the subject. I think the subject wasn't always compositionally readable so that ¨the beholder could take part more in the creation of the image.
>>
>>2400007

So the mere interest in art is enough to get you going faster?
>>
>>2399375
First start practicing every single day, 20+ drawings daily, use references and in 2 to 3 months you will know how to draw. And then just keep improving

The best time to get married is like late 20's early 30's ain't it? Pretty much a death sentence right there.
>>
>>2401515

Who the fucks bothers with marriage these days, especially men?
>>
>>2401548
Especially women. More and more women are making the decision today to never have children, myself included. Marriage is only really a convienience for some people for things like health care. It's the only reason my fiance and I are getting married (And to be honest, I want to wear the big poofy dress)

but we both agreed our dreams come first and we won't make one another sacrifice a dream for the other person, and I think that's the mistake most people make when they get married is they think they can't still live.

A looong time ago, when I was inclined to visit deviantart, I remember this one guy who had barely decided to go into art while he was in college, and he got damn good in I think ~6 years. He just kept drawing everyday. Anon, do that and also just remember that you learn something from every shit drawing. And always try to understand every stroke, mark, scratch etc.
>>

grandpa pls

learning to draw is over-hyped. There's like every artbook here, and you can torrent whatever's necessary.. Literally every tutorial is on the internet. If you wanted to be pro, you could do it in a few (1-4) years, regardless of age.

If you think you don't have time, you do. You actually don't need to draw all that much to improve. If you're learning, you should be mostly be reading,
Even if you draw 2 hours a day, you could be pro in a couple of years.

The way Io improve is simple:
1.read shit
2.try drawing shit
3.fail
4.Your hands suck? Draw that shit until you get it right.
5.TL;DR? Read that shit and try again.
6.Circle where you fucked up
7.repeat from step 2 until you understand what you're doing.

If you focus your time on understanding the art fundamentals, then you'll learn how to draw anything, really well.

TL;DR give up. there is no god. kill yourself. You aren't gonna make it. :)
>>
>>2402267

>Even if you draw 2 hours a day, you could be pro in a couple of years.

Thats not even close to true , starting from nothing it'll take at least a couple thousand hours of practice to get good enough for professional work. (not talking about deviant art commissions)

And that's if your talented. Realistically at 2 hours a day of practice it'll take about 10 years to go pro.

At OP what matters isnt age but the amount of quality time your willing and able to put in. If you can quit work and live off savings for 4 years while studying 12 hours a day then you'll be pro by the end of that 4 years.

If you can only spare a couple hours a day its gonna take you a decade unfortunately.
>>
>>2402743
This sounds a little extreme, I do about five hours a day and can see myself being quite skilled after 3-4 years (on my second year now and it's going really well).

12 hours a day is overkill, you won't be able to put in focused quality time for that long daily, it's not just about pure time clocked, it's also how that time is used. But again maybe that post was sarcasm.

For instance the people at Watts Atelier recommend a 40 hour work week (5-6 hours a day) if possible, then about 4-5 years down the line you will be really good, that seems realistic by many accounts.
>>
>>2401567

But will you have a prenup?
>>
>>2399375
Depends on when you'll die.
>>
>>2401515
>getting married
>not dedicating your life to art
This is bait, I hope it's bait.
>>
>>2403043

I have no idea what level your at so I'm just guessing but most people think there going to be good in x amount of years and it ends of being much slower progress than they thought.

I agree its not about pure time clocked but mileage is important, I was exaggerating a bit for effect but honestly its not far from the truth.

as far as a 40 hour week being enough to get good in 4-5 years I agree its possible if you have a good teacher and instruction and know what to learn. Most people don't have that.

It's also super dependent on what you want to do, if all you want to do is paint/draw accurately from life it doesn't take as long to learn as painting from imagination for example.

Its dependent on a shit ton of variables and can't really be fit into a short text post , but I think the idea you can be pro in a couple years doing 2 hours a day of study is completely ignorant how much work it takes to get to become pro level.
>>
>>2405319
Agree with all said.

Simply the 12 hour remark that was a little off-putting, two hours a day is definitely on the short side and not good enough.
>>
You're not dead.

Pick up a pencil and start doodling.
>>
>>2399375
You're probably gonna live to 70-80+, that's at least 50 years to learn art.

go for it faggot.
>>
If you were motivated and had the time, you could surpass almost everyone in /ic/ in LESS than a year.
>>
>>2405620
pretty much this
>>
>>2405495

I'm glad we could find common ground, also forgot to to add that as you improve your perception of good increases.

I'm a better artist than the people I admired years ago yet I perceive my skill level to be mediocre.I'm just comparing myself to better artists.

This also ignores "the industry" which is a whole other debate. Suffice to say what level you need to make it largely depends on how good at marketing and networking you are as much as skill just like any other job.
