Yo /ic/

how do you hold your pen/pencil/whatever? Pics pls

Because I really can't help but wonder something. i mean shit i wonder a lotta things but yanno

Could the way I've been holding it since as a child be affecting my drawing? Pic related. Sorry it's a little harder to tell the difference, but to me, it is a huge difference.

Left pic which is the "correct" way that I never learnt is pretty much holding it between your thumb and index. It feels really stiff to me and awful and all.
Right is holding it between my middle and index, then... "closing" it up with my thumb... dunno, hard to explain, you know.

Either normal tripod grip or holding the pencil on its side. I tried the Jeff Watts way but found it way too awkward, couldn't even draw a straight line like this.

A calligrapher's grip is more like OP's left pic, but with the pen more upward, resting on the finger instead of the hand itself.

Usually tripod, but trying to practice "overhand" grip.

Straight lines I can draw better with tripod, ellipses with overhand. For odd reasons.
>>
I honestly tried experimenting with holding my pencil differently and found it uncomfortable. Some positions make sense to become comfortable with for traditional art (I definitely hold a paintbrush differently depending on what I'm doing on the painting) but for straight drawing my default gives me the best results.

i hold it the proper way so i can Tilt it
sorry owners of no tilt capable tablets
>>
...So how you hold your pen CAN affect your drawing?

Damn. First time I'm hearing this, actually.

If you hold it like this you're wasting energy with a finger which you don't really need.

The optimal way is to hold it in this position is to use three fingers, no more no less, with all fingertips as close as possible to the pen. If the tip of your thumb is not touching the pen you're doing it wrong, no matter what position you employ, since you're losing a very important movement.

Come on guys, this is not fucking rocket science.

To the OP, I advise you begin training with the first position in your picture. It might be a bit hard at first (been there, done that), but depending on how you draw it can pay off in the end.

The 'correct' way feels stiff to you because you're not doing it correctly.
The index finger should be bent slightly and the pen should rest lower on your hand.

It doesn't seem like there's many people use a true tripod grip.

Am I retarded? I've always held it like this. The tip of my thumb is closer to the pen than in the pic though.
