This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make stylized work in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, have fun!

how do I study rendering materials ?
>>
>>2379652
the ref chin is wider. work on that. also your thighs might be a bit too long, and work on the knees. another thing i'd say is that the calves ar a bit too small in your drawing. put on some meat on the bones.
>>
>>2379693
try some of these material studies. use references look up contents of your material. get your whole mind around what you're trying to put on canvas.

your thumbnail reads well and it's colors are perfectly fine, the problems you have there are your foundations for that drawing
the drawing is weak, right now it lacks form or structure
the values are pretty random, you are not really thinking how things should be, you're just doing shadows randomly every time there's something convex over that area, that's no foundation
choose the position of your light source, choose if it's close or far away (directions from the source can be paralel or conic), then draw those lines doing tangents to your forms, so you can calculate something beilable

then, do values, keep in mind that the core shadow is the darkest area of shadows (except the places where light can't even get in)
At the moment, even if the contrasts are good, the shadow zones doesn't get brighter to the left, where the ambient light would bright that up
Last, but not least, when you color, mind that the most saturation areas are next to the core shadow, before the midtone that's the area of max saturation

your attitude is shit, completly, so if you're willing to drop something, you must quit that attitude
who cares how shit it is, you don't realice how many thousands of drawings like that everyone else has been doing too at some point when they lacked education
You want to hear a harash coment or what? you're masochistic
If you want to learn to draw learn some humilty and be smarter (it's a choice), ask for help rather than asking for negativity, and read the sticky, and then use this site www.drawabox.com with discipline

If you want to draw animu at that point use references, measure and use your construction, but learn to draw ovals, right there the base for that face is a broken oval, they're not perpendicular with the outsidie shape, they're tangent (use google if you don't know yet)

don't practice frontal views, if you wanna grind, you have to grind each fundamental individually, if you don't know what to do, learn what to do first of all, as that's the obvious first thing to do you need
>>
>>2379650
So how do you draw this? Not talking about the brush, but this would require constant straight lines, what tools are you using?
>>
>know whats wrong with drawing
>try to fix it
>fuck it up even more

What would be the best place to get exposure for Animu? At the moment I have a Pixiv, DA and Twitter accounts. Not sure if I should get myself a instagram/facebook/tumblr one, what do you think of those?
>>
>>2381853
I've never taken the class, but I'd imagine it'd cover things like
>How basic shapes and silhouettes affect peoples' perception of your characters
>How contrasting color schemes affect characters
(people with similar colors or misc. similar features tend to seem like they're on the 'same side', etc.)

You could probably figure out all of the same things by just studying Disney/Pixar characters' designs for a while. (Or alternatively, something closer to your current style or that you REALLY fucking like.)
Note the shape language used in villains vs. in protagonist characters or supporting roles.

Character design is a really subjective topic, though. It involves a lot of changing minor things until you're happy and you have something you can draw consistently.
>>
>>2381167

I can't into colors, but don't you think the skintone is rather saturated in contrast to the feather and scales part?
>>
>>2379693
look at materials, realize the difference between each one and how your eye recognizes which material this is, generally the main thing to study is how the material interacts with light and the shapes/textures
>>
>>2382125
>DA
BAD place to gain exposure, in my opinion. They have some seriously sketchy rules around using peoples' art to market and other users tracing/stealing art. BUT, since it's an art site specifically, a big chunk of exposure could be soaked up here. Shitty for mass-posting images.
>Tumblr
will get you the most exposure in general, assuming you draw lots of fanart. The site owners are pretty cool about theft, etc. but a big chunk of the users are trashy. You can get out of it by refraining from posting shit that'd piss off SJWs (or anti-SJWs.)
>Pixiv
Sorry about this one, but your art most likely won't stand out too much here. Most animu artists fall into the same sort of generic styles and it's very hard to stand out among them unless you're pushing in a different direction.
>Twitter
I don't have a lot of experience with this, but it seems a lot less consistent than Tumblr or DA for gaining exposure.
>Instagram
Again, not a ton of experience. Seems even less consistent than Twitter, but you can post photos and traditional art pretty easily here.
>YouTube
Good speedpaints get some serious views. Animating here will fuck you, though.
>Newgrounds
Not a huge amount of views, but if you're really good you might get a chunk of cash from here once in a while.
>Facebook
Seems like a shitty place for art unless you're previously famous. And even then, it still seems shitty.

Everywhere has its ups and downs. I'd recommend getting a Tumblr and deleting your DA. If you're really diligent, you could try to rock all of them.
>>

> Pixiv : Sorry about this one, but your art most likely won't stand out too much here.

I have almost 400k pages views and 2.600 followers at the moment, so I don't think it's too bad, only problem is that, well, it's still a japanese website.

Don't feel your list helped much though, none of those seems interesting when you put it like that.
>>
>>2382164
It'll get you the most exposure, though. I don't really like it either, but the site itself is all-around better than DA and not a lot of people even check most of the other sites.

>>2382171
I think Pixiv is one of those things where everyone follows everyone because everyone is pretty good. I'm not really sure, though, it just doesn't seem that useful to me. I'm glad you seem to be doing well for yourself on it, though.

>Don't feel your list helped much though, none of those seems interesting when you put it like that.
Yeah, they're all pretty shitty in their own ways, but there isn't much else when it comes to putting your shit out there.
Making an art-only Tumblr would probably get you the most exposure out of any of it, but again, only if you spam fanart.

What's the best time to post on pixiv? Normally even my shirt stuff gets attention, but I recently posted a piece that was crazy successful on other social media. My interaction rate was great on pixiv; more comments, favorites, and followers per visitor than ever before; but it got like no views? A relatively popular series, and it got way way less views than any thing I've ever posted, even shifty originals or obscure series etc. Like, just the normal views you get for posting. My only explanation is that I posted it at a bad time, but maybe I fucked up elsewhere?

>>
>>2382191
Don't draw for validation. Views and likes mean nothing unless they translate into income.
>>
>>2382200
That's sort of arguable. Getting a decent following could translate to commission-based income in the future, and the people who hire artists do look at the artists' personal sites/galleries/etc.

Exposure is not validation.

I don't understand.
The color harmony is pleasant.
The line weight is uniform and pleasing.
The composition is pretty fundamentally solid (mid, mid).

But....its...
...just, really quite bad, baffling really how someone could grasp those other aspects of the work at such a journeyman's level but when it came down to the actual "drawing" and subject matter, they fuck it up.

This is what tumblr is doing to kids i swear.
Just robbing them of potential.

I don't think it's bait. I just think it's bad. Changing coloration just for the nose looks bad. I know it's a meme and all now but seriously. It's not even cool or appealing as a style. It's just... dumb.

Like, I applaud you for trying something different and showing it off to such a harsh community, but this style isn't working. Try something else.

I'm the guy that drew it, I use paint tool SAI and liberal usage of ctrl-z.

>You could probably figure out all of the same things by just studying Disney/Pixar characters' designs for a while. (Or alternatively, something closer to your current style or that you REALLY fucking like.)

I have some styles I really like, but never knew how to study them. What's the best way to approach studying them? Any advice on that?
>>
>>2382344
It's weird because you're obviously into something here. I mean, your coloring, the idea behind your compistions, those are allright-- it's the drawing itself that looks weird.

You should try and loosenn up a little, study artists that you like and then go ahead with a style of your own.

Think about it as if you were learning to play guitar. Would you strum mindlessly tryng to come up with a song, or would you study songs that you like and then, after being more experienced, write your own?

Yes , so much better , see what you can do to the eyes ... Experiment with them . What i mean is , take the face , copy&paste it a couple times on a new canvas , and try to draw the eyes different . Try to make them a little bigger , or keep the same size bu change the amout of white next to the iris . I would really like to see the results.

>>
>>2383248
That face is off , the teeth are weird the nose... is generi , the hair si so not diverse and the eyes are way to animu shit.
My advice is to stop working on this and do this . First , you fuckin draw cubes and ciliders and balls and shadows and stuff and i bet you kinda did that but do them again , do them again and again and again until you start crying. then you go to the portrait (i know you want to draw animu shit but you can't without knowing the basics faggot) . Also , it seems to me that you combined a realistic nose and a realistic mouth with shitty anime eyes and that's a no no .
I can tell you that i spent 3 months drawing only bodies and shit and i cried 4 times because of my frustration but now i understand the body so much better. GET BACK TO THE BASICS!
>>
>>2383262
When something was off i used to take breaks and then get back to the drawing and i just noticed my mistakes really fast . Now i don't have to leave i just stare at the reference and at my drawing until i see it

If you are going for a realistic kr0n style it would be easier to rip off kr0n. This is borderline uncanny it is very difficult to pull something off in between animu and a real face without making it look jarring and unpleasant.

Consider pic related she is probably the closest thing for an animu face because of how far apart her eyes are which gives her appeal.
>>
>>2383392
oh-h

>>2383262
the boobs look like they're sagging. and you should've check the back again. the difference between your pic and the ref is that there's a visible trapezoid on the photo but in your pic there's none.

also consider verifying the whole figure sketch before starting the rendering process. that'll learn you to save time instead of polishing turd.

You could put some texture/more shading on the left one. It would look great I think. Btw,the strap from her quiver is missing. Also the way her cape bends makes her shoulders looks super large (on the left one). This might be only my taste but I'd make her shoulders smaller and her hips a tad wider so she'd look more feminine. Neat stuff! Tumblr?
