Can we have a "rate my gallery/portfolio" thread?
Criticism based on:
Does the gallery itself look interesting/captivating? Do you want to see more or click away? What turns you off about it, if anything?
What could be improved in showcasing work?
Could be dA, tumblr, personal website, anything.
I guess I'll start.
I made my dA last year but migrated to tumblr recently, looking back on it now there's a lot of ugly white space. I never really saw that before.
posting mine again, as I cleaned it a bit, but it's still a bit random

random reminders
>paint has the word pain on it
>studying has the word dying on it

Da is for fandom only. post your oc or sketches and youre doing it wrong
>>2374203
it looks like art studing work, you need to study fundamentals and start setting challenges
>>2374228
lets put that to the test
im gonna draw something pokemon and street fighter related and see how much people care
>>2374203
Try drawing something other than a headshot or a character standing and looking to the left
>>2374218
Good shit. I notice that you have a lot of wips/super sketchy stuff though? Employers definitely like seeing work process but I would keep those as extras under the actual finished piece. Or do one post with a ton of sketches, so that they don't take up most of your portfolio space.
I know ic doesn't like super cartoony shit, but might as well try anyway?

how to post OC?
>inb4 make your website.
No, I don't know how.
Where's a good site to upload your works?
>>2374288
Paintery stuff looks out of place
People keep telling me that my sketches look better than my digital work.

thanks for the feedback, I've gotten that response before from people, not really sure how to branch out but I'll try some different mediums maybe.
>>2374574
The silhouettes and shape languages of your characters tend to be the most similar thing, I think. I would also try doing some more backgrounds or scenes.
>>2374218
lacking consistent quality. the beige and red armor guy and the fish girl are the highlights
>>2374288
same as above actually. some of your shape design choices are nice, but when you actually get down and dirty the piece is a mess
>>2374557
nice and clear direction. Enjoying the shapes. are you doing life paintings though? I feel like there's a lot of stuff you haven't internalized yet from life that would benefit you, even though you're going for a heavily stylized look
>>2374602
the most bang for your buck would be doing life studies. it can be a simple as setting up a couple fruits on your desk and using daylight. there's always stuff to improve like your anatomy as such, but going by your stylized designs it doesn't stick out as much, while when you try painting is very obvious you don't understand the intricacies involved when light is hitting an object

That's eerily similar to what my art teacher at school says. I live in Jamaica, full of great things to draw so really there's no excuse to not do it...
>>2374531
>first 3.5/10
Any comments?
>face when I went to art school
My school gallery looks better, but the works actually have backgrounds there. How do I make a gallery of doodles/sketches look ok?
>>2374634
to be honest I didn't comment on yours because it doesn't really look like you're trying
>>2374620
>>2374597
ignore the link... accidentally pasted.
these are a few of my 'slides' I did for my first semester of IB: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1L6_mhPkHm6dlLW-VYj2nF5FVgNdAKxhdBHH1NO0dJyU/edit?usp=sharing
that's pretty much the extent of my life drawing, there are no figure drawing classes in Jamaica so even the 'life drawings' are really just from images.
>>2374218
do not show WIPS or fanarts. unless you're applying for a company that you want to prove you can emulate the style of. It's highly unprofessional. Directors are looking at your worst work to judge if you're up for it. Having unfinished work in your Portfolio in all places just says you're undisciplined and can't be assed to finish your work before you show it.
Overall inconsistent work. Reduce down your portfolio to 6-10 works at best. Right now your best work is that egyptian chick portrait. finish it up , make 5 more in the same finish and you'll be acceptable
>>2374288
Your environments are very sub par to everything else. First figure out if you want to be a character or an environment artist, then focus your portfolio .Your characters need work as well but they're better than your environments
>>2374477
keep studying. You're un hire-able at the moment
>>2374655
You mean with studies or what?
Also be as harsh as possible, it's hard to get a realistic perspective.
>>2374680
I'm not really in a position to give that great of advice since I'm still developing myself, but I think you should probably practice your fundamentals? Your form is off (is that the right vocab word?) and also I think you try to emulate the typical 'anime' style when really you should be studying the masters/life and in turn your own unique style will emerge.

>>2374750
uh, yes. un hire-able. the perspective is deplorable.

>Implying that cant be fixed in 5 minutes with a ruler
how about an actual portfolio?
I need to work on the padding and filling up the page correctly. But this is my website.
Ive gotten some solid critque, my work is too sloppy and needs mote clarity and sharpness.
Its sad how much shit I have to filter out, but then again its not about showing off all my "precious" art
http://www.tropzilla.com
>>2374759
Well then. What do you think about my newest sketch?
>>2374819
sorta cute but that's it. anatomy (especially on Disgust) is wonky, and the linework is meh (no variation in line weights)
>>2374855
Post your work.
>>2374819
the proportions are really off, even if the aim is to have a stylized piece of work. Like, for shoulders the rule of thumb is that they have the same width of the head (as in, each shoulder's length should comeout a head's-length), while here you have shoulders that aren't even the width of a single head.
but I mean keep chugging dude, It's still better than the average person I'd say.
also is there any context to this? just curious.
>>2374864
yeah, ok.
>>2374872
i should really start learning backgrounds.
>>2374873
>>2374866
>Like, for shoulders the rule of thumb is that they have the same width of the head (as in, each shoulder's length should comeout a head's-length), while here you have shoulders that aren't even the width of a single head.
>>2374880
you made disgust's waist too wide and it made her shoulders look too narrow in comparison; the other anon noticed it but pointed out the wrong error.
going for the stylized look and making the shoulders narrow is fine if you modify other proportions accordingly to keep the whole body/object/whatever looking appealing
>>2374407
FA is the most accepting of OCs even human characters but it has the severe downside of being a site for furries. Spare the debate here about furries, regardless of whether or not all furries are "like that" you'll still run into those who ARE so it's not really worth it.
>>2374750
Yes, unhireable.
Instead of acting like a spoiled brat , do yourself a favour and actually sit down and study instead of derailing the thread with your poor art just because you didn't like what you read.
>>2375037
I refuse.
>>2375037
I can argue against a critique if I think its wrong. The fact that this makes you so mad isnt my problem.
>>2374563
extreme perspectives 1up composition,anatomy, rendering
>>2374634
ya, use guidelines, stop doing easy poses, anti rendering
>>2374828
which one is better? the guy who plays it safe and uses reference or the one who uses thousands of hours on a bad piece? I dont know which one you think is better, probably the first 3.5
>>2375077
its not wrong, you're roughly 1/7 of the way to a level where anyone would may it be consider hiring you.
>>2375079
>plays it safe and uses reference or the one who uses thousands of hours on a bad piece
which one is which
>anti rendering
what is this?
>>2375083
Critiques can be wrong. In the end, theyre just opinions. Saying whatever you want wont make me change anything.
I love the way that I draw, and ill continue to improve my stylization.
>>2375093
2bh if you're having fun with what you're doing that's all that matters.
Unless you want to sell your work or "make it" like everyone's trying to do here. You don't have to care about that though.
>>2375093
>>2375039
ayylmao
>>2375077
that's a poor mindset for improvement; you should instead have a rational attitude towards criticism and use it to improve your work. if someone tells you that you should fix X, try it, and if it doesn't make you better, whatever. life moves on. at least you tried something new.
if you always block out negative criticism, you'll get yourself stuck in an echo chamber and delude yourself into overestimating your skill without improving.
>>2375093
you can't improve your stylization without first working on your fundamentals. people who focus on their 'style' too much only end up limiting themselves (re: 99% of Deviantart)
but hey, do what you want.
>>2375099
If I think drawing bobble heads and skinny bodies looks cool, ill do it. Most people here would consider cartoony styles awful anyway.
I dont care. I draw because its fun.
>>2375093
for your own sake I really hope your trolling because you can't even render a rudimentary form yet which is something you learn at the start of taking art seriously... 1/7th way there is generous desu
i dont want to come off as an ass but I think you could try a little harder
>>2375103
>I dont care. I draw because its fun.
no problem with that, but why are you posting ITT then?
>>2375103
>I don't care
>please here's my portfolio , critique it
you're a complete retard buddy and you should just shoot yourself
>>2375109
Thats a good point actually lol
I should never come back here.
Just kidding. I'll still come to advertise in the promotion threads. Because why not.
>>2375114
Thanks. Love you too boo
>>2375115
Well this isn't a promotion thread, this is a critique thread.
