Reads more like a storyboard than a comic

It is true. I have no very clear as to take advantage of smaller vignettes. I am a scientific illustrator and I know just a little comic.

I don't normally do comics, but I got excited for the next season of Daredevil. Respect to legit comicbook artists, was a lot of trouble for me.

I'm going to draw my 2nd hentai comic this year and maybe couple more. Last year was really lazy

I like it, but it doesn't read very well with all the bright magenta. It took me a minute to stare at it and distinguish what was what. Maybe throw something else in to give some contrast between elements, desaturate it a little. If the background elements were more desaturated, I think that would go a long way.

>decide to draw first comic
>doesn't matter if it turns out shit, it's just practice
>try to think of the most basic short story so I can focus on the art: A guy enters a bar and grabs a drink
>start drawing a sketches with no details
>realize I don't know how to show a character sitting down on at a bar stool
>attempt to draw it multiple times, can't get anything decent
>research it a bit but can't really find anything that helps
>ask on /ic/, get no reply
>ask someone IRL, he doesn't know
>give up and draw other things

Thinking about it now makes me a bit sad.
>>
>>2351771

>google "man on bar stool"
problem solved.

References. Every "pro" comic artist does it and with much more frequency than amateurs.
>>
>>2351776
I mean the action of sitting down on a bar stool. A static guy on a bar stool is no problem.

It felt weird going from the frame above to the guy instantly sitting. When I tried to draw a frame of him sitting down it looked a bit like he's floating. I also tried adding things like speed lines as a crutch, but it just ended up very awkward.
>>
>>2351778

You could download a movie where there's a scene where tired-of-life man after all those failures that happened to him goes to a bar and asks for whiskey.

AFAIK basic mechanism is putting your right foot on the front of a ring that goes around the stool, leaning a bit forward, putting your hand on the stool or on the bar and pulling (more like pushing) yourself up both with the hand muscles and straightening your leg while other leg lifts itself from the ground.

Tricky part is that you basically twist your body 90 degrees unless you pick up the "pull yourself from bar" variant where you already have your body oriented properly to sitting.

If I had to draw it, I'd draw a pose at the beginning of the motion with leg and hand prepared for pulling yourself up and another frame just before the end of a motion or after it when character "adjusts" himself on a stool.

Frankly you should research movies where there's quite a bit bar scenes.
>>
>>2351797
That's a good idea, thanks!
I'll give that a go sometimes.
>>
>>2351771
its because its a compound movement that happens in several stages, its like trying to draw a journey in one image.
one frame of the motion may well look strange, just watch people and try to understand how it works.
>>
>>2348011
Man no one would've said anything if you just made all the shadows in the last panel flow together.
>>
>>2349281
Your cover artist sucks. Every pane element is just oddly stacked together.
>The foreground:
where are the zombies coming from?
What are the 2 guys standing on?
>The background:
The perspective of the castle building thing is odd.
The Nosferatu and witch are alright, but what is the idea for the blood oozing from the sky?
As a brand design and motif, that blood could work as a recurring theme.

>>2349283
This is great. You need to get this artist to draw your covers

I thought a Comic would be a good project to work on for practice but couldn't settle on one story so instead i'm going to do some short one shot stories. I don't really have an aspiration to be a comic artist so trying different settings will give me an opportunity to design different things and try different art styles.

Problem is I've hit a brick wall when it comes to digital art, I've always been a paper and pencil person so making the leap has been hard. The sketches come out ok-ish but I can't ink for shit, really struggle to get smooth curves and lack the precision needed.Any tips on technique or tool settings worth knowing? or is it a case of 'Git Gud' and just keep practicing?
>>
>>2351755

>Literally everything about comics (lettering, paneling, thumbnailing, bubbling to composition) makes me feel like dying a little.

I do comics professionally. It doesn't get better. The worst thing about it is that your drawing is always significantly worse than when creating single illustrations, for various reasons.

Comics are a logistical nightmare and a twisted bastard of a medium. It's like trying to make an entire film single-handed, and everything about comics basically works against you.

You have to be a real obsessive piece of shit to even get as far as I have (not very).

The panelling is much better than I could ever hope to achieve as an amateur. It seems like you've got some experience in this field.
I've gotta wonder though, why's the little dude so sweaty? I assumed that it would be because he's nervous, especially since the panels seemed to zoom in at one point... Maybe it's contextual.

Rider and a horse feel very flat, especially last three panels seem like you just pasted them on the background. I think what stands the most is second to last panel, there's just no climbing motion in a horse figure. Rider also should lean forward and not just sit as he is glued at 90 degrees.

I have been doing a webcomic for a few years now. Due to circumstances I was forced to upload stuff directly from sketchbooks with minimal clean up and comic sansing the dialogue. It's a challenge to get a strip up every other week or so,and someday I will return to a more produced strip. But I try to pour real effort into what I do create. At least I am adding to the Lore and Canon with what I do.

Some practical advice: flip panel two around, so Bianca's on the left, and ekans on the right. This helps the flow of the comic, so where she's facing is in the same direction as the reading direction. It helps to make it less choppy, and improves clarity, it's "in front" of her.
>>
>>2361281
The amount of shading and detail, coupled with the large dialogue boxes makes it king of hard to understand what's going on in the panels. Prague Race is a good example of how to do a black and white comic. Check that out.

One more.

Real old,but what I "should" be doing, not these strips drawn directly from sketchbooks with minimal cleaning. It's from the graphic novel I was working to produce 20 pages at a time so I could sell them as comics then collate them as collections like Cerebus the Aardvark. If you want to understand this stuff...go here...

Working on one for class.

It's a super rough, slapped together thumbnail rn.

The story is basically Zeus talking to Hermes about all the times he got game because Zeus does some wacky shit and Hermes was cool with it at first but then he's like nah brah.

I'm generally aiming for this fucky clip art style, so the final would just be a cleaner version of this, maybe fix up the dialogue.

What do you guys think?
>>
>>2370298
Also, does it look too autistic?
it's supposed to be shitty but I feel like as of now, it looks bad shitty instead of good shitty. I'm thinking of dropping the idea but then I'd need a new one because by the end of the class, we have to have a physical copy of the comic and I can't draw so yea.

>>
>>2356548
Not much I can really give tips on. You'll probably come to realize most of this on your own but some revelations I've had is be prepared for lots of back and forth editing especially if you're writing a serious story. What I mean by this is that something you write in the beginning shouldn't be set in stone and you shouldn't intend for that either. Because further down the line you're going to get the hang of writing, and really be into it where ideas naturally come together and as a result, you'll find there'll be some discrepancies between what you started with and what you have at the present moment. So you'll have to edit the beginning to match what you like and so on. Basically don't limit yourself to what you have in the beginning because lots of great ideas will come about later on.

Do lots of research. I did a whole year of researching the history of my setting, bought tons and tons of books and read quite a number of them all to help me get a feeling for how things will look when writing.

For coming up with ideas, be very open minded. Always have your story on your mind at all times especially when watching a movie or reading a book or whatever. Sometimes you'll see a cool scene and want something similar. Sometimes a scene will trigger a train of thought that leads to a great dialogue scene and so on.

I want to, but I'm torn between two ideas I have, maybe you guys can help me decide?
The first one is about a kid falling into the underground world of knife fighting and him trying to legitimize it as a sport.
The other is a man losing everything and befriending an alcoholic wizard, and the wizard taking him through various journeys just to convince the guy to kill himself.
Which sounds more appealing as a read?

The second one sounds similar to Rick and Morty. Alcoholic scientist takes kid on adventures, after which kid probably want to kill himself. I guess just be aware of ways that your characters could be samey. Also should watch Ralph Bakshi's Wizards if you want some good material to parody.
