Questions go in the QUESTION THREAD
This is for posting studies & getting critique.
>Thread study: Try to draw/paint the opening or any other following images.
Feel free to post your originals as well.
TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - there are many studies left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.
Respect those giving you advice and if you suck don't give advice.

hi there
i've been drawing on and off for a while, but i just came to the realization how bad i really am because i was trapped very early to depend on reference pics. i'm making an effort to draw from imagination. any tips? any resources recommended?
i used a random noun generator, and it gave me 'soup'. i sat for a minute or two and thought of a scene. what are you guys' creative thought processes?
same guy as >>2336432
could use feedback
>>2336434
>>2336432
keep drawing stuff you love or want to draw from imagination and incorporate reference as you go to improve on whatever needs to be improved, whether it be anatomy, proportions, color, etc...It's the best way to get better and not get stuck doing random studies that mean nothing in the end
>>2336462
will do. thanks for the advice.
Currently doing the Erik Olson perspective videos, what else should I be studying in my off time? What's a good reference for learning individual features of the face because all of my features look bad.
I need to draw more because I love this but I can't get myself to.
Please tell me anything that might help. I'm sure there are a lot of people in the same situation as me.
To those who went through this what happened that make you go forward and draw more?
>>2336590
>I love this but I can't get myself to.
If you loved it you should be wanting to.
Either way, the best way to get over procrastination is to just start. Set aside half an hour a day and you might find once that 30 minutes is up you still feel like continuing.
Don't wait for the perfect idea to come to you, just start slapping shit on paper. None of your good ideas will come out the way you want them anyway when starting out so get all your thousands of bad drawings out of your system sooner rather than later.
There's not a magic solution to shitty motivation. Just schedule time to draw and draw.
>>2336590
You know the regret that you know you'll feel later?
Feel it now.
>>2336590
Force yourself to do it everyday, for at least 20 minutes. No matter if you feel like it or not. Never skip a day.
The reason for this, 20 minutes is enough to get you in the mood for it, and If you don't feel like drawing after 20 min, no worries, you will eventually start drawing more and more as you keep doing this everyday.
>>2336735
Probably the best advice for any beginner. This is how drawing become a habit.
>misplaced anon's advice from one of these threadsthat helped me get out of my slump and actually start drawing and was pretty inspirational overall

I've been reading some Bridgman lately, now I'm trying to apply some of what I like about his stuff to other figure drawings. Trying to do some (relatively) less messy sketches. I think I fucked the hips up pretty bad on the third one.
I've been up all night so hopefully they're not embarrassingly bad and I'm just not noticing.
>>2336898
better than anything i can do. Im still trying to get stick figure proportions right.
Anybody got any tutorial recs? Ive been drawring my whole life but it was always while looking at a picture of something.
I finally decided to try and tackle the thing im the worst at.
Drawing humans. Hands, feet, legs, arms, torso and god help me...faces. FUCK faces. Cant draw a face to save my life.
Any techniques for basics would be great.

Here's how I've been spending the morning. That statue thread is absolutely awesome. Feedback so far?
Can anyone point me to good rendering techniques? It takes me a long time of tweaking to get to this sort of result, which I think doesn't look terrible, but is also kind of muddy and could be achieved more quickly. Is it just a question of practice and building confidence with my values and strokes, or is there something wrong with my rendering technique on a fundamental level?
Also, how do I into faces? Lots of failed attempts of getting the likeness in this drawing already.
>>2336926
smudge tool?
>>2336938
Are you asking if I use it or suggesting that I should? Thought it was frowned upon, and I find it kind of shitty.
I do a typical mix of opacity and solid strokes, trying to follow the method shown in >>2328957 but I've no idea how to get that economy of strokes and solidly-defined shapes.
Should I draw skulls in perspective or just keep practicing heads?
>>2337028
Probably do some skulls because you clearly don't understand it at the moment and that will affect your head drawings.
>>2337049
I think you are quite right about not understanding the skull. it seems the head constructions (ball / plane etc) ended up hurting me because the heads looked very flat and I couldn't progress them past Ironman masks.
When I built from the skull my heads don't have that problem. still needs a lot of practice obviously but I feel like I'm on the right track now at least.

The thing is I'm already trying hard everyday learning a new language, been doing so these past two years, so usually after I'm done with that I don't have enough energy left to get myself to draw.
I'll do my best though. I suppose I should try to see it as something enjoyable rather than something stressing.

Use basic forms and describe what these forms are doing in space, what is in front, behind, tilting, moving away form you, or towards you. Study how others use gesture and how they build on top of it much like a sculpture uses wire frame for structure. Remember to try not to copy but instead build the figure up with these forms.
Know the bony landmarks to help you keep proportion in check and in relation to parts of the figure (hand is the size of the bottom of the chin to the brow for example)

I don't get it, what the fuck is wrong with you, why are you so fucking bitter. Are you a troll? What you said is correct, the feet he drew are blobs, which is kind of weird considering he is paying attention to form in every other part of his drawing, but can you not be an asshole and tell him like a normal person? Something like "You should take your own advice and try to pay attention to the form in the feet, they really don't fit with the rest of the drawing in terms of quality".

Not sure how to deal with the cheeks and dimples and such. If I try to draw them with lines, the face ends up looking like a hideous monstrosity from wikiHow.
>>2338100
She has no proper cheeks or chin which resulted in her having some kind of 'weird approximate too big' mouth.
>>2338100
>Not sure how to deal with the cheeks and dimples and such.
It's an interesting problem, isn't it? Deciding what to draw and what not to draw.
At the end of the day, a pencil stroke in a certain spot isn't a real representation of the lighting or color of a source image. It's just there to imply the idea of something. It's very abstract.
Even though the eyes in your image are almost a one-to-one reproduction of all the curves that the eye has, the idea of the eye can be represented so much more simply.
Look at the threshold image. This might be what you see in extreme sunlight or something. But the shape of the eye is so beautifully simple in stark black and white. And you can instantly see that it's an eye as well.
I modified your image at the bottom (crudely). Even though it took a lot of work, look at how much you can take away from the eyes and still have it be meaningful. But maybe you chose to detail the eyes, because you want to draw attention to them. That's what personal style is.
As for the cheeks, it would be a shame not to highlight them somehow, since the cheeks in the source are so prominent. A small line near the mouth seems to highlight it well.
Again, even though it isn't a true representation of the clear, dark line from her mouth to her nose, the point is to convey the idea of a protrusion in the face. And it can be conveyed that simply.
Drawn from life, any critique or advice how to approach life drawing?
Hey guys I want to get back into drawing, I always used to do it when I was a child but during high school I never really learned anything, art class kind of killed my interest in drawing so I stopped trying and my stuff wasnt very good anyway.
Here is one I kept of Balamb Garden, it didn't take long desu. I used to like smudging and monochrome images, art teacher used to complain about that.
Please give some advice, I never learned anything about art other than copying other images badly.
Is it worth getting back into it?
>>2338177
the sticky is all you need to get started.
And nobody can tell you if its worth getting back into it, that all depends on you.
>>2338100
The next step for you is to add value (greyscale) the drawing, this should do the work with the cheeks, cuz light and darkness add depth in drawings
Hello, not sure this would go into the question thread, since it doesn't look like it's up, but what the best exercise for line weight? Whenever I draw with a pencil my lines are always too thick, and I really can't control pressure on my tablet either. Anybody got tips, or do I have Parkinson's?
Hope this time i will do it regularly
>>2338100
I think you failed to commit far enough to rendering the mouth accurately, leaving its right corner to far into the cheek, at least suggestively.
See how the corner of her mouth is tucked away under a wrinkle that connects subtly down toward the chin? Now see where your rendition turns upward at the corner instead. I'd say this was a good choice if your aim was more for cartooning than photorealism (nothing wrong with that), but harmful if you want to keep going with the cheek development and tacking on more shading.
tl;dr I think the problem is the corner of the mouth turning up instead of down.
Oh, and her jaw's a little off.

Does there exist a drawing book for absolutely inept total beginners?
One that starts with the absolute basics like drawing a straight line or circle and then takes small steps so that you don't get overwhelmed? One that holds your hand and explains everything to you so it's clear to you what you do?
Every book I looked at yet felt like pic related to me.
I don't fully understand the purpose of the exercises, how good I should be doing them before moving on and what skills I am supposed to learn from them. The explanations sound vague and subjective.
Anyone got any suggestions?
>>2338306
How to draw like a boss.
I normally wouldn't recommend that book but in your case this might exactly be what you need. You can't find a slower approach than this.
You can most likely find a link for it in the previous thread, or the one before that. If you can't ask again and I'll upload it for you.
>>2338306
You can already draw a straight line, really. You just don't know how. As for drawing a "good" circle, that's something that takes years, especially because you'd be mad to make that a goal.
Sounds like you're overthinking this whole thing enormously. Pick up Keys to Drawing and just do it.
>>2338315
I see the reviews here are negative but maybe because everyone here is so smart.
>>2338320
>Pick up Keys to Drawing
Well I have a few questions then. Just how good am I supposed to be able to do the exercises? Like when you get told to draw an apple. Does it have to be photorealistic? Just when do I move on? This is what I mean. I can't find a clear goal. Like if I am studying math I need to solve the exercise problems that have solutions. Because I solved all the previous exercises correctly I know that I have all the tools I need to solve the problem. If I solve the problems correctly I move on. If not I keep practicing until I do. But here what is the goal? Maybe I should try looking for art courses. I seem to be lost without an instructor.
Draw this two days ago while going through Drawing on the right side of the brain. Turned out OK I think but it took way to long. Any exercises I can do to make my drawing more like sketches on not a full on drawing everytime.
You already know how to draw a straight line and a circle.
So for someone who wants to be able to do stuff similar to pic related, and who is currently maybe 1/10th through Keys to Drawing, what should I be practicing? I still have trouble with very simple things, so it's a long way away but I'd be really appreciative if anyone had advice on things that'll be good or a waste of time for me.
I'm aware that somewhere down the line I'll need to get a tablet, but I feel like the better I get with a pencil, the better it'll make me when I finally decide to invest in a tablet. Is that incorrect thinking?
>>2338345
in all likelyness youll never reach this level, if you do its probably 4 years off if you draw everyday, you can practice whatever it doesnt matter.

start with small. make small goals. you can always look up to great artists, but if you've just started off, you should look at people that are a bit better than you, but not too much. from a masterpiece like datura's you will not learn anything. it will just be pretty. whereas when you would look upon a piece created by a person of similar level, you could see their mistakes and ways of revealing form that you could learn from and maybe interpret into your own creations.
the thing is, you have to have a target in mind, but it shouldn't be too huge.
i started out by just taking 2 hours a day to draw. at first there were days when i'd just want to do anything but draw, but determination and grinding is the main propelling engine of progress. read books on perspective, read books on composition, read books about tones, surround yourself with an atmosphere you can learn from.
adios
uggh i'm pissing myself off because i can't even do fucking gesture posies right

It's a beginner book. It will have clear descriptions and pictures of what you're supposed to arrive at. Seriously, you sound like you're half in a panic or something. Relax, stop overthinking this. Pick up a beginner book and go through it. Practice, practice, practice.
As for goals, what is your goal? You have to answer that, not /ic/. Why do you want to learn to draw? Do you want to run a webcomic? Be a concept artist? Draw porn? Whatever it is, that will be your ultimate goal. Take porn. To draw really attractive porn, you need to be really good with figures. Proportion, gesture, anatomy, form in general. That isn't the only thing you need to be good at, but now you know what to focus on. You can now begin drawing figures every day for years to get that good. So your goal may be to draw 100 gestures and 10 figures in a week. Or it might be to just figure draw for 1 hour every day.
>>2338533
i'm supposed to do all this in 60 seconds?
>>2338543
if you cant make it in 60 boost your timer. Kinda like i used to do hands in 2 minutes and not have enough time and now i never finish the counter if its just the basic form.
>>2338540
>It's a beginner book. It will have clear descriptions and pictures of what you're supposed to arrive at.
Not always. And some look to be honest a bit too ambitious for a beginner to me. Like how the apple has good shading when I haven't even been taught shading yet.
>As for goals, what is your goal?
To get really good at (realistic) figure drawing from imagination. With a focus on detail. Don't really care much about anything else right now. I would like to be able to create photorealistic 3D sculptures as an endgoal. I assume I need a very good understanding of anatomy for that and be able to replicate the sculpture on paper.
Do I need to finish a beginners book like Keys to Drawing first before starting a figure drawing book? Are there any figure drawing books for complete beginners? I tried fun with a pencil and it felt too advanced for me to be honest. I had a hard time making up any faces on my own. I think I lack the visual library and creativity.
>>2338519

That's pretty neat actually. The cockpit looks kind of sloppy though, and I feel like the exhaust is awkwardly placed, and maybe too short. The tail of the plane could do with more shape to it, just a bit. There's perspective issues all over, but I can't really get specific about them.

Dunno how you measure and draw, but a trick is to figure out where the hands, feet, knees and elbows are placed in relation to the rest. Draw them in, AND THEN draw the legs/arms. So you know for certain the destination and you don't end up with wacky arms and legs.
Also, don't stress too much about getting it pixel perfect. As long as the pose looks solid and correct on its own it's all good. Pixel perfection comes with time.
Posted a little bit ago about how I went back to drawing on paper from a tablet since I'm just beginning.
This is my drawing and reference. One thing I noticed that I am having a little trouble with is getting proportions right. Most of the process of drawing this was trying to measure out everything to an accurate proportion. While this overall was an improvement from what I was doing on tablet, I'm unsatisfied with the proportions. An example would be that I drew the forehead a bit too small.
Is this something that just needs some grinding that I'll get the hang of eventually? Or is there something specific I should be doing/reading.

Agh, what you did with the eye there is like next-level drawing for me. I have no idea how to simplify these things and what lines to erase after I'm done constructing, so I tend to leave most of them.
Do you have any advice for this stuff? Or is it just play around\find what works\look at how other artists solve these problems?
And thanks for your feedback!
>>2338203
>>2338205
I'm terrified of value. I can't move from rendering spheres and cubes to applying that knowledge to faces, even though I at one point memorised the planes of the face. I understand that once I learn how to do that, though, the cheeks would become easier to deal with.
>>2339046
it's not grinding
it's starting to take measures and try as many ways as possible, some with a ruler, some with your eye, some by thinking about simple shapes, some with a sixth sense you'll develope
once you try them enough times you'll instinctively pick the most effective for each situation
in my case this one would be solved by doing a triangle and a couple verticals to see that everything is aligned, others would for example take measures from the head and compare to the rest of the pic
just don't mindlessly grind, it's a waste of time. unless you're actually developing a skill, spending time doing stuff hoping that somehow knowledge will fall on its place may work but is a waste of time. be goal oriented, always try to either try something new, figure out what's wrong about something you did, or polishing a technique. that's what studies are for
>>2339056
From the sounds of what you've described, its what I meant by 'grinding.' Perhaps better wording on my part would have been good. It's something I'll pick up over time as I draw. Not something to focus on learning. That about right?
Is it possible for an old fart to lean how to draw? Or is drawing like learning a language, once you're past a certain age it's hopeless?
>>2337942
depends of the style, remember if you wan't to be realistic that's not the way but that look like a "cartoon" style then i can't see anything bad.
>>2339091
Whoever tells you that learning is related to age don't know what they are talking about. It's related to ambition, drive and playing.
>>2338922

First of all, if you're asking for crits, do everyone the common courtesy of flipping your image and making sure the page is placed flat, getting rid of the useless background would also be appreciated. Best option is to scan, of course.
I'd say you have a lot of work ahead of you in terms of measuring angles, negative spaces and proportions. The wrong direction of the folds on the boy's shirt also indicates you have problems with perspective.
You might benefit from altering your workflow, starting by sketching out a very simpified but proportionally accurate frame and then moving on to details.
>>2338620
i guess it's the artist, Gatchaman Crowds is the series and Tatsunoko productions is the studio.
>>2339091
Don't be silly, of course it is. And so is learning a language. It's a matter of putting in the hours and not quitting.
>>2338922
>>2338955
>>2339101
Just admit you traced it bruh
>>2339072
focus on trying new stuff or trying to notice what you did wrong and figure out how to do it right
>>2338336
you have clearly learned how to SEE
I would suggest you learn how to draw the basic forms now.
>>2338985
Understand what symbol drawing is beyond "le symbol instead of reality"
I swear I'm going to have nightmares about those cheeks.
I think I messed up the tilt of the head slightly. Any pointers\crits\anything would be welcome.
I've been hype fit Pokémon Go, so I drew a Char. Feedback appreciated.
>>2339267
the shading under his head makes it look like his head is popping out of there, leaving the idea of the body being an egg.
>>2339273
Sadly, that's pretty accurate.
Stupid question but what exactly is preventing me from drawing what I see accuratly? Why do I end up messing proportions?
>>2338990
either do a better job or shut your whore mouth
>>2339286
The same thing that's preventing you from doing anything perfectly from the start. Comparing proportions by eyeballing things simply is a skill you need to hone.
>>2339286
You draw what you focus on as being larger because you feel it is more important. It's just a subconscious thing people do automatically, like they make the face on a head too big.
Plot out imaginary vertical and horizontal lines to see where things line up and this will help keep things in relation to each other. Never put anything down before making sure it is correct compared to everything else.
>>2338742
Remember that feeling because you're going to have a lot of it in the future too.
>>2339286
Some people just have an easier time taking what they see and putting it on paper, while some specialize in drawing from within. It's a specialty and approach thing, trial and error as well.
>>2339284
Yeah, but the neck needs better shading, or the underside of the head needs stronger shading, because it's really hard to understand if he has a long neck or if his head is coming out near the hands
>>2339286
take measurements and consider things like negative space and relationships between angles and shit
a good example of doing so is using comparative measurements between your ref and your drawing in progress. not literal transfers of measurements though cuz the scale is obviously different
so let's say you're trying to figure out the width of the shoulders on a body; on the ref you'd take a pencil or something and you measure the width of the head, and find out that one head over from that equals a shoulder. you then go to your drawing, measure the head you have on your page, go one head over exactly and put an indication of where the shoulder is. it's a simple method to check proportions and all that
>>2339296
I personally think this is the best thing to do atm. Draw the absolute raw base and work your way up from there.
>>2339298
Yeah, I see what you mean. I went for a heat mirage effect but I obviously sacrificed the details. Thanks for the sweet feedback m8

same boat, i wanna draw cool shit but it's... study. Boring. I don't wanna look at a half naked dude and study his ass or look at flat chicks and study her shoulder.
But I forced myself to draw for at least half an hour a day, I still skip a day if I'm busy but make it a habit. I've kept all my sheets I've used to draw and some of my early stuff looks like complete trash, so I know I've improved, even if it is a tiny bit.
Tried drawing hands for the first time. Is it a bad habit to find other features in the drawing to aid in measuring and determining what goes where?
For example the red line I noticed (on my arms at least) the outer line of arm sort of goes through the middle of your pointer finger.
I also used the outer line of the thumb and realized the inner line is parallel.
When I do gesture drawing I also find for stuff like this, like if the elbow is in line with the chin, if the left foot sort of matches up with the right ankle etc.
>>2339317
Sort of badly worded. To clarify, I drew the hand first and in order to determine where to draw the arm lines, I looked at my own arm and I noticed the outer line for the arm goes through the middle pointer finger roughly.
>>2339317
not really sure what you're asking
using angles and 'plumb lines' is fairly good. it allows you to get proportion measurements right. a lot of artists look at their own hands while drawing to find little things exactly like those you are describing
>>2339306
go alt thread you graduated from beginner.
>>2339325
oh ok i didnt know there was a term for it
pretty much just been lurking around /ic/ and watching/reading stuff
One minute gestures today. I polished some of them for maybe half a minute past the pose. I am dangerously satisfied with some of these, so please beat me down before I get arrogant.
i have a few quick questions with this one so i dont end up putting in too much more effort if it sucks.
first is, how do those leaves look? basically i made a layer and painted a bunch individually with different angles and colors and such, copied the layer a couple times and adjusted, flipped, warped etc.
second perspective check on the ionic column. i think i got it but i want to be sure.
lastly, loomis check on the statue head.
if everything checks ill continue putting more detail into it
>>2339345
also this isnt how the final comp is going to look at all. incase someone brings up composition.
Tried drawing Magneto looking a little from above and some stylization but slaughter it pls.
First drawing
I'm wondering how the hell do you draw hair. I see artists create lively, flowing hair, but I don't understand what gives the hair life.
>>2339345
1. Looks like they floating in lake of blood
2. If you can't check perspective by yourself, then you doesn't know anything about perspective.
3. Clown lips, nose too long
Values is too dark.
>>2339353
Right hand is missing a finger
Eyes are way too high and just looking into empty space
Weird thick pointy feet
The light source coming from the hand shouldnt be making shadows on his hand, it isnt really illuminating much past his leg
Cape is a mess but i know you wheren't focusing on it so whatever
Try using some finer brushes and more broad strokes, less scratchy ones.
Apart from the the pose is nice and the lighting's ok. The mouth has some nice detail too.
>>2339334
I think I must have been feverish when I posted this. It's fucking garbage.
>>2339382
where is his penis
Hello again beginnerfriends! I'm planning on making a sort of tarot card set. I want to do something elaborate and intricate, but I'm hitting a rut Looking through some references, they either have bland borders like mine currently, or they have elaborate designs that I have no clue how to re-create. Would any of you be willing to lend a hand with this and help me make something like this
>>2339571
into something like this (shoutout to exitmothership, the one who created this and is a pretty big influence)
>>2339571

How do I make Loomis fun
I'm finally beginning to get a grasp of creating form, but drawing these basic shapes over and over until they make sense only holds my interest for so long.
Should I just take a break? I kind of want to go on since I have nothing else productive worth doing, but I'm feeling a bit burnt out. I'm eager to apply my newfound knowledge to more interesting drawings, but I don't feel at all confident in my abilities (which is warranted, I certainly need more practice) so I just end up half-assedly studying shapes for 15 minutes at a time before procrastinating..
>>2339586
>I'm eager to apply my newfound knowledge to more interesting drawings, but I don't feel at all confident in my abilities
Do it anyway. There are things you need to improve upon alongside form and doing form exercises over and over won't tell you what they are.
>>2336432
Oh fuck..
Ive been drawing for a month now doing loomis like the sticky told me and I just realized I have not drawn from my imagination since I was like 8 thats like 20 years ago. All I have been doing is drawing from reference?
The thought of drawing from the imagination is jarring.. How fucked am I?
>>2339595
Not much at all, I don't see how anyone but experienced people can draw without references.
Drawn from a wood figure on my desk. Any comments?
other noobs email me: [email protected]
lets help motivate each other
:)
>>2339595
Loomis tells you to draw your own things, but with his methods
That should be enough to give you the confidence to stand on your own feet
>>2339603
Will you then hack me anon?
Messed up the positioning, but drawings the new years resolution, alright for day 5?
>>2339608
Just keep practicing angles and negative space. Then it will turn out okay
>>2339606
No I'm serious. I really just want somebody to talk to about this stuff. I don't normally talk to people online outside of 4chan but I thought this would be a good idea to help stay motivated and talk with other beginners on a deeper level.
>>2339608
too much contour drawing, needs villpu
>>2339625
send me a message at [email protected] im sure i have a position for you.
>>2339657
Well memed :^)
>>2339661

>>2339672
I always knew you were gay but not that gay.
>>2339683
only when money is involved. What am i some fucking capitalist scum? My country has social programs to pay you if youre gay.
What's the best setting guys?
Don't know how to use Photoshop.
I'm using a 27 inch monitor
>>2339715
I tend to just use A4 size and it suits me fine, at that size you basically need to scale it down to a third of its size anyway.
That image size you have is really big. Which can be good but I think yours is too big, especially if your PC can't handle it. Your computer might just shit itself every other brushstroke.
>>2339715
>12k x 7k
4k max should be enough
>>2339725
4k by what, sorry big beginner here.
>>2339745
That depends on what you want to draw, I usually go for 3.2k by 4k but it's completely up to you
>>2339218
Alright.
Now can I have some real advice?
>>2339825
>>2339469
thanks man, great stuff.
well this is just sad
>>2339831
Looks typical for that exercise, so I wouldn't be upset.
>>2339828
That's only going to help someone that's not even aware of the concept of symbol drawing
>>2339825
The underlined part is what generally makes the difference between advanced symbol drawing and clean drawing. Think about it, use your brain. If you still don't get it I can explain it to you in a more condescending manner
>>2339831
The funny thing is even if you do the exercise spot on perfect it'll still look retarded because the image looks retarded.
>>2339842
>That's only going to help someone that's not even aware of the concept of symbol drawing
Which is a substantial amount of beginners.
>>2339854
Clearly the guy he's replying to isn't one of them
And don't give me "That doesn't mean it's not relevant to this thread," I never said it ain't
What are some good tutorials on teaching how to value in the basic shapes.
I need help finding something to study. Literally nothing appeals to me right now.
>>2340044
Here you go anon! Do a study on this.
>>2337065
Abstract impressionism? I'd pay for the right one in color oil if I'm reading it right.
I tried drawing Falco. Crit? This is one of my first drawings using a tablet, I'm really loving the precision of it
Drew the opening. Kind of disappointed that it took two hours.
>>2336422
Starting to get into coloring, I would love critique on how I am doing, not just on the color itself but also on structure and the sorts. I've never bought an art book before, any suggestions?
I meant for this to be on the "what you did in the past hour" thread but this seemed more appropriate.
I just got finished reading Fun With a Pencil, and now I'm at Drawing on the right side of the brain's exercises.
I'm having some serious problems with drawing a self portrait. I just don't know how to start.
I've also never drawn from life before.
How do you guys start your portraits?
>>2340159
Take a still picture of yourself for reference and use that. Do not do this is it an exercise of memory/creativity, just role with whatever you can think of if that is the case.
I usually work outside in or inside out, starting from outlines or starting from the nose. Usually you start from the outlines if you are doing it to learn. If it is for the soul purpose of learning make structural connections about the body, if you can make out muscles or generic form then work off of contours.
someone please fucking help me, im so miserabl bad and am getting nowhere
what am i doing wrong i cant render for shit
2 1/2 hours and this is the best i can do
what the fuck is wrong with me
>>2340163
So, no mirrors?
Alright, I'll give it a shot.
>>2340164
Technique and practice gives to greater results in smaller time allotments, you just have to develop it. Prepare for frustration and hopelessness because unless you commit and understand where your flaws lie then you will have trouble progressing
>>2340164
what's wrong is you're a lazy shit that probably didn't read a single book on anatomy or painting.Rather than renderring your concern should be drawing an appropriate torso ,,,fucks sake
>>2340173
i was trying to design an overly muscular male, and was using this as a reference
i could post some more examples of my work if you want to see those
i really like your torso though, damn i hope i can get to that level
>>2340169
>you just have to develop it
someone told me this a few threads back when i posted another drawing i did, that at my level its more about putting in the hours
what do you think about >>2340173
should i really go back to reading, and where do you think my flaws lie?
>>2340173
Nice arms and torso, but holy shit at the backwards thumb stiff hand
>>2340187
the thumbs not backwards...
>>2340188
Are you blind
>>2340192
are you ? you can clearly see on the redline that its drawn correctly. I just didn't bother putting in contrast to push it behind the palm. Fuck's your problem ?
>>2340194
Try not to rip your cock off when you suck on it.
>>2340200
>called on his bullshit
> o-oh yeah ? well you're a poopyhead
real smooth anon, cancer like you is why there won't be any descent critiques on this board. At least I bothered to give a crit. You just shit on me.
>>2340203
Hey, I'm not the blind retard here. I couldn't care less when you start crying.
>>2340205
>muh projecting
First time doing an actual still life, critique and general advice greatly appreciated
>>2340187 anon
look closer. the thumb's not backwards. it's just a quick example. no need to act like a child.
Also, >>2340194 anon, stop encouraging the twat, you're being just as childish.
>>2340196
>I thought the concern had been about coloring and shading
Yea thats my biggest concern
I get why the other guy had a problem with my torso though comparing his to mine i see my mistakes even though i was using a unique source material
Idk just trying to be honest with my art
But yea i definately feel fucked
When it comes to coloring
>>2340219
>>2340203
Im the guy who originally asked for help with the torso. im not >>2340187
>>2340217
Yea the advair isnt purple you jackass
>>2340228
The one i used for reference was a white training one
Before i start colour/render.. is there anything that could be better/less shit?
>>2339483
i actually think some are really good
How do i into good penicl rendering? I really like the style of karl kopinski, dave rapoza or toolkit04 but i when i go for a more 'sketchy' style with hatichng it alway looks off and i have to smooth it out later
>>2340083
I really like this but the perspective on the bench is fucked, it looks like its pointing upward
>>2340299

>>2340256
work on your anatomy for a few months then do it again. if you want to get good you shouldn't waste time rendering shit drawings. spend your time doing things that will help you to be a better artist tomorrow
