Nobody really does hangouts etc. To be honest it's just funposting 95% of the time and 5% art. Most people don't even draw (if at all ever) and just want to talk; which there is nothing wrong with that. You'll meet the faggot beginners who don't want to listen to solid advice from the upperclassmen. The side-dish queers who talk about their sex life and how much of a pimp they are. The wannabe famous chatterboxes who brag about their notes and how famous they'll be. The picture spammers who spam uninteresting photos and or memes. Being in several groups like these, I'd advise all of you not to expect that much productivity in the actual chats. What we do most of the time is find a few people we get along with there, and then you PM them and can go full productive. Because when chats get large, it's impossible to control everyone and force them to be productive/on topic while still keeping the chat alive.
So maybe those of you complaining about chats being unproductive are just kept out of the more private conversations. Though I'm not in the groups that were mentioned in this thread, so I can't be sure.
But because you can find individuals to talk more with privately in those chats, I'd say it's a good experience. That way you get critiques and advice from people who know you, see a progression in your work, and not people on /ic/ who only see one piece of your work. You learn a lot more from it and you get friends, of course.
