Well hiya fellas, I'm new around here and was wondering if I could get a critique from y'all

This is my most recent painting, in acrylic, I practice stream of consciousness or automatic painting
>>
Put more of your consciousness into it by putting your head up to it and blowing your brains out.

That would sell

Hello new friend!

Don't listen to this faggot>>2304538

Unfortunately /ic/ is a naked model and space marine critique board. It's against The Code Of Loomis to make any critiques based on modern art.
>pic related
But don't be discouraged! we have a sticky http://hubpages.com/art/how-to-draw-learn

When you can "feel" the drawings you know you've made Vilpu proud!

>They grow up so fast ;_;
>>
It would be a lot stronger without those pseudo figures in it imo.
>>
>>2304559
In automatic work it all starts as pseudo-somethings or others.

Do you feel like I should've left them only as suggestions as they originated, or that I should more fully render them?

Contemporary art is garbage. OP you can still save yourself. Look at the sticky and you can start to do proper drawing.

Are you really op?
If so, we may have gotten off on the wrong start. Contemporary art isn't something anyone can critique. Anyone, even a blind person, can throw paint on a canvas and claim it's art.
This board usually focuses on things that takes time and study to master. What where you looking for in this board? Aside from a very likely bait thread?
>>
>>2304601
This is op, I'm looking for a critique, it is a critique board after all

The college I go to, most if not everyone there is a contemporary artist and we have no issue critiquing one another

Also this isn't splattered paint, are you blind?
>>
>>2304575

That is garbage. Crappy perspective, bad anatomy on that skulll, bad everything.

The point still stands. Learn real art OP.

Before 1930s most people learned from the greats from Leonardo, Michangelo to Dante Gabriel.

Don't study the 65 years of garbage art.
>>
>>2304607
Perspective, anatomy, got it - thanks, not the piece I brought here to have critiqued but I appreciate it I'll study up on that

I might reiterate that that was my 3rd painting so yeah my skills have changed a bit

What do you think of the piece I brought here for critique?
>>

looks like art student hipster trash
this is coming from a guy who digs abstract art

try less doodling more thinking.
>>
>>2304653
That's an interesting comment. Thinking about what exactly? When I was making that I was strongly tuned into the process of creation.

Could you also point me in the direction of art student hipster trash that this looks like?

And while you're at it, tell me if this also looks like art student hipster trash, I consider it one of my most successful earlier paintings.
>>
>>2304605
>>2304661

If you're going deep for expressing "emotions" then I would say the figures and the head is way to literal. IMO, the key is to have the shapes remind you of a human figure, but you shouldn't be able to consciously "read" it as a human.

But that's coming from a design student who deals with perspectives and 3d forms, so take the critique with a lot of salt.
>>
>>2304666
Well I actually practice stream of consciousness or automatic painting as I stated in the OP, not the expression of raw emotion.

But I like the idea, I might try doing a painting where I leave only implications but use contrast to draw the audience's attention to them.

Thanks Anon

>stream of consciousness or automatic painting
most people call that "doodling"

abstract is fine, but I want to see dynamic compositions, bold interplay of color, huge scale or heavy texture, etc.

this has none of that. it's just tucking doodly shapes into each other until you have a a web of lines that lead the eye nowhere. no point of focus, no implied narrative, interesting juxtaposition of shape and form, etc. just nothing really to look at and hold on to.
>>
>>2304680
It's actually a very specific discipline of surrealist work; but your critique is solid, I'll taking notes and taking it to heart, thanks
>>
>>2304684
I'm aware of the technique. it led Masson to create "battle of the fishes", which has a lot to look at, interesting materials and texture, implied narrative, a sense of space, etc.

I don't hate your abstract work, but it does bore me, and I think you could take it to the next level.

also the inclusion of figurative elements here:
>>2304661
is a distraction, as your skills in anatomy/rendering aren't up to par with the rest, so the face just ruins the image. perhaps if it were more abstract, like Masson's fishes, then it would not be as bad.
