I getcha man I like the idea of it but I'd like to find a nice middle ground between that and all the details I do, I will try to work on what I have as far as doing I don't know if I have the time since this is so on the 19th and I wanna take my time with the markers, I will however try to change the lettering into that example, but thanks a shit ton man that's a great example.

You're welcome dude and yeah like I said I didn't expect you to try and incorporate it into the one you're working on right now. If you do any more stuff in that style though, you should definitely check out actual street artists because there's a good way of having really fine interior lines while having super thick outer lines that I think would work well for what you're doing. Good luck in the contest.

Hi,

I was wondering if you design the porait like this deliberately? if so, why, whats your approach? Do you feel like the likeness is accurate in your drawing compared to the modell? I would greatly appreciate an insight to your process. And nice job btw.

Take a pic of your hand resting on a sword like item.

I sketched this at the wrong angle, but maybe something more like this. I would rely on your picture to nail what you really want, though
>>
>>2271492
from a design aspect I actually think this is the strongest portrait I've done. I measured the top of her hair down to her chin, then measured that amount down to pick where to end the drawing. I also tried some cool stuff with making the scarf on her shoulder extend down past the rest of the drawing.

as for likeness this is probably the best face i've done of this woman. I find symbol drawing is the best way to capture likeness. Everything rendered an equal amount usually leads to a generic face.

Unfortunately since this wasn't someone I know, I didn't have the opportunity to draw right in front of her ( I'd have been in the way of other artists), and have her look me in the eyes while I drew which I find is the best way to guarantee the model doesn't drift from the pose, and that I can make out subtle shapes for facial features. I was probably a good 10-12 feet away from her and ideally you'd want to be 3-4 feet away from someone for a portrait.
>>
>>2271463
You are thinking in contours rather than constructing the forms, which is typical to a beginner. Caring about anatomical mistakes like
>pretty sure I made the pecks too high
at this point is pointless. Go back and review the loomis books, they help you get a grasp on form.

>>2271420
Symbol drawing at its finest.

>>2271443
Are you even trying?

>>2271451
Flat and 2 dimensional, no depth

>>2271465
It looks like what its supposed to, a graphic design. No sense of form. Also the thick brush is too much and you're using it inconsiderately at points, the hands for example.

>>2271496
I've tried this a lot in the past but it never quite seemed to work. I think you really need someone else to model so that you can focus on capturing the exact angle and pose you need for the image. If you put the cam on your table and pose yourself it's never going to be accurate enough. Your sketch makes me want to try a little harder with the hand though... it really looks awful atm.

your stuff is always too jaged and angular. its very consistent the way you draw but its not very aesthically pleasing especially for drawing faces and figures. I would suggest trying different methods. use more curves to break the monotony of your angular drawings. look at drawing by sargent and other artists you like for what to aim for.
>>
>>2271523
Better scrap this and star over rather than trying to polish that turd. It won't get better by morphing it.

>>
>>2271520

>>
>>2271525
i think that can be alleviated by making the lines less shaky. If i'm using a lot of straight angular lines it would probably be more aesthetically pleasing if they were actually straight. Same with curves. It's a refinement issue, and me not focusing on the individual parts of the whole...

but >>2271523
that guy is hilarious. that looks nothing like the model I was drawing. That nose is huge and you ruined her cheek bones. Don't try to adjust other peoples life drawings in photoshop. The features are those shapes for a reason

His faces aren't unappealing because of jagged and angular shapes, it's possible to make great portraits using lines and shapes like that. The problem is he pays no heed to good drafting principles like solid construction and measuring proportions, that and I think he just doesn't have the mileage to know how to make that stylizing subtle.

Timidly stepping out from the beginner thread in hopes of getting shit on in a more productive way here. I consider myself a beginner but I don't tend to get much critique over there.

Additionally, does anyone have suggestions for rendering in manga studio? Right now I'm mostly using the brush named "Watercolor brush" because I really like the blending, but I feel like it makes everything kind of blobby and messy, and I wouldn't mind something a bit cleaner.

Also I know the horse looks pretty derpy.
>>
>>2271764
your values are mostly 1 and 10. You need to work more with middle-values to organize your contrast and give a heirarchy to the features of your image. Right now there's maximum contrast (a 10 immediately next to a 1 value) all over the place and its very jarring.

also your forms and construction are weak, but thats a practice thing. Study hampton and draw from life more.
>>
>>2271778

Thanks for the tips. I wanted to make the armor appear shiny with more contrast but I see what you mean by overdoing it, I think I went too hard on the values right at the start and left myself nowhere to go.

There's something appealingly casual about how you did the fur scarf(?) and her top and the sleeve. It reminds me of Lindsay McMinn (@cactuswax on instagram) and that sort of careless style.

That being said, the face doesn't work out as stylized or realistic. I don't know where you want to take your art, who your inspirations are etc, but if you want to do more volumetric and realistic then start thinking more about volume. The hair as ribbons. The "cylinders" of the clothing wrapping around her body. Draw through.

basic perspective is fucking you up m8. also line quality. if you can't draw perspective approximations without going off at completely the wrong angle use a grid. Even better. get a grid, hide it, try and draw the correct line and then check yourself (you'll improve real fast).

But look at your drawings. They are unconvincing because they use ugly, blocky, poorly composed shapes that don't attenuate properly in perspective not because of value. Values come afterwards, if your drawing is bad no amount of painting is going to save it.
>>
>>2272163
YEAH! you tell that fucker where he belongs.
>>
>>2272163

Thanks, I see your point. I've been told by teachers that I was too stiff with my perspective since I usually plotted everything, so I'm trying to get the hang of doing it without constructing every little detail, i.e. freehanding perspective.

Could you do a redline on where my perspective is off, if you have a minute? Also, any advice on line quality improvement?

Apart from all that I'd still like to learn about value, since it needs a ton of improvement either way - so that question still stands.

haven't redlined every instance of the problems as they're too pervasive and I would encourage you to look for the rest of them yourself. Perspective stuff is just practice, I don't think you were thinking.

I think you've failed to realise that your line work implies a massive amount about the way light is hitting an object and about the depth of an object. At the moment your value painting and line work are working against each other. There are multiple instance where your line work is thicker even though your painting is implying that light hitting that area the most i.e. thinner lines. Also in terms of building objects in perspective that point where I wrote "no" is a really good example but there are others. A thicker line implies that you are closer to the viewer. So when you carry that on you are saying "these things are equally close to the viewer" and I don't think you meant that. If you did then that's poor design and I would encourage you to change it. I think you'll be surprised how much better your values look if you fix the overlay.
>>
>>2272014

That's so fucking cool man
>>
>>2272244

Fuck man, thanks a ton - that helps a lot.

That comic-y feel really annoyed me - never thought that inappropriate line weight was to blame for that. Didn't realise how much my lines mess up everything else, I'll work on that and keep your advice in mind.

I see the perspective flaws, but was under the impression that for loose thumbnails they are not severe enough to matter. But yeah, I definitely should have done a properly constructed clean drawing before throwing any values on top for the final one.

Much appreciated anon.

Your work isn that bad though. The construction on your main figure looks worse than the concept sketch the the left of it, like you got lazy making sure your forms wrap around and interlock with each other. Try doing studies from chavez, start with a toned canvas and copy his work. If you're diligent about getting it to look the same without the eye-dropper tool or tracing/horizontal/vertical rulers, You'll learn some of his methods. Then you can go back and apply them to your work.

I think maybe you rely on outlines to define form, you just need to learn to use value/light/shadow contrast to define form. Try painting that beetle's shell just the way it is in the photo. Just paint it by looking at it, don't use lines, just colors.

I think it could benefit from some compositional changes and moodier lighting. Maybe crop in close, have some shapes in the extreme foreground, and is whole back can just be in heavy shadow with some rimlight. Pic is from Jae Lee's one-shot of The Sentry, in case you want to look at more. I'd also recommend maybe looking at screenshots from Gravity or something for inspiration.
>>
>>2272460

I tried with a more direct and brighter light, but the contrast was too high that I would need to render everything accordingly. Maybe I'll post another version later so you guys can see what I mean.

About the pose, I dunno, I tried rotating him in a lot of positions and that was the one I think best fits. Dunno how I would make it look more like he is drifting.

Your approach is symbolic at the moment, what I mean by this is that you are thinking in lines and contours rather than figuring out why they're there. This results in lack of form and perspective. Construct everything first and think why certain lines are there and what they're supposed to describe. You should review the sticky.
>>
>>2272587
Perfect, that's pretty much the way to do it, when it's still easier to make changes and corrections. I knew you'd get past that in no time. These designs are looking pretty cool, I'll be watching to see how they come out.

your choice of colors always seems a bit unfortunate. but i see you do that so much that i figured it's a conscious stylistic choice. is it? because if it's not you might be working with a horrible decalibrated monitor. also i would make an effort to group values more clearly. grouping values is the reason catbib and ruanjias work looks so gorgeous.

i do love the vibration in you've got going on the checkered sleeves though. that works rather nice. oh also exercise some restraint with saturation... less is more imo. it's easy to overdo it with stylized characters because he feel like they should be overly colorful.
>>
>>2272613
Looks pretty nice so far, if this is a block in. The only thing is the face somehow looks like a little kid with a prop mustache to me. I'm not sure what you could do for that, maybe more definition around the eyes and cheekbones.

Your wip hinted to something different, it reminded me to the way Rapoza's Lichman is colored, I also feel a bit uneasy regarding the Nebula-cloud, for me both are very different in terms of scale and hence placement, so seeing it in this way is very odd.

Yeah, I wasn't sure about going more cell-shaded or rendered looking, I told it when I posted the WIP. In the end I thought that more rendered would make more sense with the subject matter and have a more "heavy" feeling than the simplicity of cell-shading, even if desaturated.

And I agree with the cloud. I wanted to make him fading in the background but couldn't find a nice looking way that would fit without darkening the image too much.

I'll mess with that image tomorrow with fresher eyes and see what I can come up with.

Things to do:

Finish the character.

Add vegetation to the foreground and middleground.

you don't know how to draw. take a pencil and paper and look at your hand, or someone else's hand and try to draw it. post what you draw so we can critique it. obviously you know some slick photoshop tricks to give your illustrations the impression of a naturalist atmosphere, but that doesn't, and never will make up for bad drawing.

"you are not allowed to make decent looking work unless you're a master draftsman"

that's my whole point. it isn't "decent looking", and the fact that you're willing to skip over a fundamental skills for glitter and special effects shows where your values lie and how committed you are to the art form.

So, my point remains. He can't draw. He can dress up bad drawing in global lighting, textures and weak, partially fulfilled gestures, and make it appear to have a naturalist effect, but that doesn't mean his drawing isn't still bad. The programmer who wrote the software that allows him to overlay transparent gradients to integrate the lighting and the palette had a larger hand in making this guy's drawing than the guy himself. He's using the tools of Photoshop to prop up lifeless, sloppy drawings.

So no, he is not a persecuted genius, no one is trying to stop him from "making decent looking work". I, and I'm 100% certain that every professional artist I know would with me now as they have in the past, that if you want to make illustrations of anything, you need to know how to draw.

Also, "typical"? You make it sound like someone telling you that you need to learn how to draw is some kind of juvenile irritant. Do you really think you know better than all of the Renaissance, Baroque, and Neoclassical artists, that somehow, because you have this powerful tool, that you are suddenly gifted with more wisdom on how great art is made? You are a fool if you think that.

And yes, there are no shortcuts to "getting good". A bicycle that is poorly welded falls apart and is not "good". Likewise, illustrations made by people who never learned how to draw are not good, no matter how many effects you pile on top of them.

Learn how to draw.

I feel ya.
>>

I don't actually have much constructive criticism, but I did want to say that your face, although unfinished is well constructed and feels like it could come to life, like it could be part of an animation. the expression is dynamic, and the only bit of anatomy that seems slightly out of place is the bend in the neck, the placement and size of the collar bones, and the shoulders seem a little too narrow.

I can see him slowly raising his hands up while his eyebrows undulate, and eventually he lets roll from his sagging jowls, "Oy vey!".

Are you an animation student?

Still chipping at this, trying to figure my guys out. Gere is based on a bearded vulture, while Fregar is based on a magnificent frigatebird. I'm not quite satisfied with Fregar, but I'm not sure what to do with the design. Gere is a little closer to what I want, but I'm not happy with his lower body and boots.

Have plans to add two captains and two lieutenants to be their sidekicks, respectively.

I'm doing traditional (acrylics, pastel and charcoal) but it takes a while and since I'm even less versed in that media I prefer doing studies like >>2271894 and >>2270570 at least for the moment. I do have an imaginative acrylic piece in progress but I think I can improve it much further before posting it again.

>>2273331
No, I sincerily thought it would not be visible with that kind of twist and pov.

Lol no, do you think that because the way her belly is shaded, its shape, both?

I'll also agree with it, that shit was cool and I'm tired of the whole "everyone who compliments or just doesn't say something negative about something is clearly just op" meme.

>>2273441
I get what you mean on Fregar's design. Basically his major design flaws is the bulging throat, really strange if the character is a soldier.

Try giving his a bit of a neck and drop the weight onto his stomach.

I want to keep the bulging cloth because it made the chest look large, this majestic look. I don't mean to backpedal, but a lot of what I'm thinking about changing isn't in the interest of realism, but more to do with silhouettes and making sure they have an emphasis in their design to keep them from being evenly proportioned.

In any case, I lowered the chest piece like you suggested. How's this?
>>
>>2273474
>silhouettes and making sure they have an emphasis in their design to keep them from being evenly proportioned.

Are these birds dress as knights, or knights dress as birds? Fregar is the only one that stands out as a 'bird' then the rest. Honestly if it isn't the latter then stick with the original.

>>
>>2273486

It's the latter, guys as birds, sorry, I should have clarified that earlier. To get a softer, feathery look, I had the thought of making them have these metal suits, but with fabrics woven through and on top of the plates.

Thanks, mate. You're right. I reviewed the sticky and I think the problem lies in that I need to review perspective studies.

To explain why I did it symbolically, though: I'm doing the Watts atelier course, which has heavy emphasis on copying the drawings of Jeff Watts first. This was one such master copy. One way or the other, it seems to be a working system, since my work in general has improved a lot.

But thank you for the feedback, I will keep it in mind.

What is up with the Draw Thread this time? Really cool stuff in here
>>
>>2272795
Well, I base the anatomy from the reference I used. Her proportion may not be ideal but they were real. Thanks though.

>>2272819
Yeah the definitly look better, especially if you add some occulusion further in the neck to define the jaw line a little better. The reference had some exadurated darks I think, I don't actually know If they occured like that naturally or if it was editing but i prefere the more subtle gradiant in yours. Great input, thanks!

>I don;t know what's going on.

It is supposed to be a fisherman on a boat from frog perspective, you can see the guys rowing and a bit of ocean as well, it not very clear what is happening I'm afraid.
