Stephen Silver recommended basically doing blind contours for caricature. Makes them much more unique.

These are really great. I love your use of shapes!
My only suggestion would be to work on your lines, especially in the hair, it gets a little busy in an unappealing way. Try using a brush pen maybe. Be more confident!!!
Look at Silver's lines, they have weight and confidence!
>>2269349
Thanks! I've been working on my confidence forever; still got a long way to go. I'll try using less lines for the hair.

your anatomy drawings are really good. Do you practice with references?
>>2269823
nah it's all from imagination, that's why it gets wonky sometimes, but I like it like that. Mostly learned anatomy from medical books. I will move on to studies lifedrawing someday though, don't know when.

Not on paper, but even still.
anyone have tips for avoiding this inside a sketchbook?
>>2271618
It's unavoidable really. Put a piece of paper in between.
Or just hairspray it when youre done, I don't fucking know.
>>2271618
I used to cut them out, put them in plastic wallets and then stick them back in
>>2271657
I really like the style. I'd love to see more of this but maybe with a little bit more fluidity.
Pretty good though.
>>2271618
Buy workable fixatif spray. They sell it next to all of the art shit at Walmart. It's only like $5 there. It kind of blew my mind when I found that out.
You can also spray it with a bit of hairspray. That sort of has the same effect.
How do I get over only drawing comfort zone in my moleskine
>>2271825
I never really have that long of a period where I am not drawing that I am afraid of doing bad work in a new book, but maybe if you went ahead and shit on a page you wouldnt care any more? Just take a big ol poo inbetween two pages and smash it hard like a fibrous smelly smore.

Make sure the graphite goes inside the tooth of the paper properly by going over the drawing with a brush. It will help prevent the smudging from happening at least at a minimum rate, but it wont stop it from happening.

Decided to ink a sketch for a card for my bf. As soon as I started inking it I realized the heads seem kind of big... Never worked too much with perspective before either :s Thoughts?

And because I'm bored, here's a proportion sheet for the top half of her body (which I can see you have slightly outlined in the picture). Think in terms of head size.

I look like a child irl ;-; But (hopefully) probably not as young as my pic may look. Maybe once I add shading I can make myself look more of-age hahah

These are really helpful, I never thought about the elbow-over-head thing. Thank you! :) Also I really like how you drew that arm over the head.

>>2274573
We begin to enter autism territory.
1st day of sketching in a sketchbook with references.
Most proud of the shading on this one.
So I have a habit of not drawing shapes leading up to the final image. I just draw an edge and go from there. Is it bad to do so?
Because I feel perfectly comfortable where I am now.
>>2270467
i think you would benefit from maybe not defining the lines so distinctly as much as letting the light define where the lines should go. Its in a way as if your drawing outlines around predominate features of the face
Actually, now that I think about it, I only do it when I have to make it look like the reference. If not then I do use shapes, especially if starting from scratch.
>>2274722
construction is your friend.
Haha, yea the fact that I could've brought a sharp pencil for drawing and a dull pencil for shading went over my head... yes, for an entire year.

it's based off insecurity of having your sketchbook judged by others. There's no reason to show anyone your sketchbook, if you want something to show to people then buy a separate book that you can use as your portfolio "sketch" book... so you can impress your shit friends and tell them it's just your "sketch" book ... ugh disgusting but I won't judge, there's your answer anon >>'

The form of the heads are decent but it looks like you gave up on the bodies. Do form and anatomy studies bruv. No use getting good at drawing heads if you can't draw the rest of the body to an equal level.

tattoo artist reporting in..
Aside from your lack of knowledge in anatomy, your shading needs work *im not even going to talk about the perspective of that crown, please look at people wearing hats as reference of it*
Anyway, if this is supposed to be tattoo flash art (and it totally looks like this is what you're trying to draw here) You need to work on your dark areas. When it comes to drawing pencil flash art, it's better to create a deeper contrast, your shading, some may say, is alright for a drawing, but for tattoo flash, it's too light. You need to push dark areas. I would suggest using your 6B pencil really dont be afraid of putting the blackest areas down in ink too. Really makes your flash art pop.
Please work on your text. It should flow, and each letter should be around the same size in width. Always plan ahead with a grid for text. I would practice by writing one word, over and over again in different 'fonts' until you can do it effortlessly.
Please for the love of god, reference, reference, reference.
Aint no shame in looking at the thing you're drawing sweetpea.
>>2280832
Does being a tattoo artist give you free pussy, kind of like a photographer does? Assuming you're not a carpet munching vagina bearer yourself.
>>2280851
Im sure if I were male I would be elbow deep. But yeah, I've seen it a lot. Most girls who come for the odd, infinity symbol, or kids names want a bad boy and well.. doesn't get more badass without disease or a prison sentence than a tattoo artist. But usually in the high end studios that doesn't happen. In the gritty down town ones, yeah all the time.
Its funny, were i work right now, the guys married and has kids, still see the girls trying to get money off for a blow job and shit. I just sit at my station and laugh, cos he's one of those guys dedicated to his woman and family.
But yeah, if you wanna get free pussy, but wanna be more talented than a photographer. Probably good career to get into, just don't open or work in a studio in a nice area and bam, you're swimming in the pussy.
Just got a toned sketchbook, christened it with this.Thoughts?

tattoo anon here.
Looks good so far, you should look into developing line weight though, gives simple line-art depth, thicker lines where there would be shadow. Just gives tattoo line art a bit more depth and direction
This is an okay example of what I mean, if i find any better ones on my travels around the interwebs ill post them here to you so you can get a good understanding. If you have instagram, just search #tattooapprentice or #tattooapprenticeflash and you'll find a shit load of really good references to what i mean, and you'd be able to see where you think your skills sit, I always thought that helped, seeing where you were in a group of peers, you wont really get that here in /ic/ not many tattoo artists kick about. Let alone people who are looking, or have gotten an apprenticeship.
Hope I'm being helpful.
>>2281394
oh and stop chicken scratching your lines in, you have to be proud of your lines, like uhm, what am i trying to say, bold holds man.
Strong, one pass lines are a must. They must be clean, and sharp, best way to do that is stop drawing with your wrist and use movement from your shoulder and elbow, dont be afraid to turn the page rather than your body to get a single stroke. Dont stay in the one place with your ink, or you'll get ink blobs though. That completely breaks the line.

very nice! what are you using/reading to study?

>>2283187
I think this'll just be a nice big advice post.
I don't read many art books. When I do read them, I'm mostly bored and not entirely paying attention anyways. A lot of the time, I just look at artists that I admire (erik gist, jeff watts, kim jung gi, frazetta, ruan jia, etc.) and analyze the way they make their marks, the value range they use, their edge control, and whatever else I can pick out that makes their work unique. I watch some Feng Zhu stuff for inspiration, too.
I used flickr for the deer and the heron claw (I made a yahoo email account a while back, apparently the two are connected somehow so I had an account on Flickr too). Easy website to use, just search for the thing you want and you get tens of thousands of high-res pics. Pretty underrated imo.
The bottom two came from a current body thread on /fit/. 4chan is actually a really good resource for references- I use /s/ for women in general, /fit/ for fit men and fit girls, /hm/ for men in general, /fa/ for clothes, /soc/ for faces, so on.
One more thing- I've only been studying every day for about a year now. Pic related was my very best back in December of last year. Big advice piece: definitely draw every day. If you miss a day once, don't bug yourself about it; just try to draw again the next day. Find your weaknesses, have a go at them, and try not to be scared of the whole process. You'll fail a bunch of times, but you'll learn a lot of stuff, which actually is almost as good as succeeding.
>>2281978
What a cunt.
