YOU! Yes, YOU RIGHT THERE! I don't give one fuck if you're tired, uninspired, masturbating, seeking advice, or feeling as if you will never be good enough! You will STOP! NOW! I want you to DRAW! You must draw something - anything - and make even the slightest improvement! Then, you will do it again. Not because I'm telling you, but because it's the reason you picked up a pencil in the first place.

also atleast you're aware of what you need to improve upon. Use that as even more motivation because in the case of art like that you really want to create a product that is aesthetically pleasing to yourself, and nothing creates that more than actually spending time and working on it.

Even if it takes 50 hours to render the perfect nipple.....especially if takes 50 hours to render the perfect nipple

>>
>>2255236
Motivationanon, that's just the tip of the iceberg of what I need to work on though. There's proportions, (self confidence), animals, etc. so much I need to work on. Then there's comparing myself to other artists even though i know they had to work years to get good. It still feels like I'm not working hard enough or I'm doing something wrong. How do you do it anon? Keeping positive and motivational all the time.
>>
>>2255244
My trick is to be so depressed that you NEED to work on something constantly to use the focus as a barrier and coping mechanism. Like running around to stave off being tired.

The best trick to getting shit done is actually getting up (or in this case sitting down) and putting in the work regardless of how you feel. At some point it just becomes second nature.

As for not working hard enough, compared to what? To others? To an imaginary status quo? Downtime is as useful as time allocated to productivity. Just work on what you can when the idea pops into your head. Don't believe the christians, deth metal isn't the work of the devil lathargy is.
>>
>>2255269
I guess you've got a point. I just wish i was at a better place is all. Working hard enough with compared to others I mean. I fear I'll either end up in an /ic/ cringe thread or be like those dA artists who never improve despite drawing for a decade. I lack confidence anon, and I some times wonder if I'll make it. But something tells me you believe I will and will say I should just believe in myself. Whatever you do to be so positive I want to know anon. I could use it.

Motivation has to come from within, what is your goals with doing something?

https://www.ted.com/talks/dan_ariely_what_makes_us_feel_good_about_our_work?language=en

Recognition & meaning! We want people to recognize our efforts and do meaningfull (to us) life work.

I paint because I'm a hedonist and find the act itself enjoyable. If I don't like doing it I don't do it. Just work with what you have and find joy in that.

I know this pain
Why do lock yourself up in these chains?
No one can change your life except for you
Don't ever let anyone step all over you
Just open your heart and your mind
Is it really fair to feel this way inside?

[Chorus:]
Some day somebody's gonna make you want to
Turn around and say goodbye
Until then baby are you going to let them
Hold you down and make you cry
Don't you know?
Don't you know things can change
Things'll go your way
If you hold on for one more day
Can you hold on for one more day
Things'll go your way
Hold on for one more day

You could sustain
Or are you comfortable with the pain?
You've got no one to blame for your unhappiness
You got yourself into your own mess
Lettin' your worries pass you by
Don't you think it's worth your time
To change your mind?

[Chorus]

I know that there is pain
But you hold on for one more day and
Break free the chains
Yeah I know that there is pain
But you hold on for one more day and you
Break free, break from the chains

Don't you know things can change
Things'll go your way
If you hold on for one more day,
If you hold on
Can you hold on
Hold on baby
Won't you tell me now
Hold on for one more day 'Cause
It's gonna go your way

Don't you know things can change
Things'll go your way
If you hold on for one more day
Can't you change it this time

Make up your mind
Hold on
Hold on
Baby hold on

It makes me wonder if there are any great artists that didn't draw in their childhood. I read from a couple of old masters who said it was essential.
>>
>>2255220
i took a month off drawing with my dominant hand, because of some wrist pain. during that month i drew with my non-dominant hand. now my non-dominant hand has wrist pain. when should I legitimately take a break from drawing? wrist exercises dont seem to be effective. maybe I should exercise my wrists more?

>It makes me wonder if there are any great artists that didn't draw in their childhood.

It's hard to find any plumbers or electricians who never drew in their childhood. EVERY child that didn't grow up in a fucking war zone drew shit when they were little. Not even sure why this retarded argument always comes up.
>>
>>2255417
Brad Rigney did start late. He was interviewed years back and I remember him talking about how he fucked around in his 20's, didn't do much art, playing in bands and crashing on friends couches or something like that. In his early 30's he started to get serious about his life, with a wife and kids for part of it along with a day job he spend most of his 30's just studying and getting better and didn't break onto the scene until close to his 40's. I'd have to listen to it again to be 100% on the details but I know he didn't start until his 30's. Here's a link to the convo I think he talks about it in.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mEU03Q5H5sU

>>2255401
The reason they're great is because they've had more years drawing than the people who didn't draw much when they were young. It's not that people who never drew as kids can't become great you just have to make up for all that extra time they have on you. Plenty of artists, including young ones haven't draw much as kids. It's all about putting in the hard work /long hours however old you are.

I'm at the point right now where I've accepted that my work will never be perfect, which is a good thing because that means there will always be something I can work on. I'm pretty ok with actually stopping to work on stuff, but it's more about finding time really. I admit I do still succumb to the "I don't know if I can do this" mentality, but I know that logically that's even more reason to try.

No guys guys chill. Hyper activeness is often mistaken for motivation and excitement but it is a dangerous thing and can lead to failure.

What you need to do is relax, just calm down. Okay you're not drawing enough right? You want to draw more? The thought of having drawn alot and having skills is exciting it makes you wanna just jump at and start drawing. But we all know what happens after that. 10 mins into your power montage of studying you get bored and you stop and sometimes even feel like you're not up for the job, that you're a failure. That's the hype. You wanna avoid it. It's immature

What you should instead is calm yourself, slow down your excitement. Think about why you want to git gud, think about how you need to git gud. It's gonna take a long time. And then realize that it really is going to take a long time and accept that. And then, with a calm and collected mindset, do some serious studying of whatever you need to do. Do about 20 minutes, and take a short break with a glass of water and do a little more, and do as much as you're comfortable with.

You have to be reasonable with yourself. If you don't work hard enough, you don't make progress but if you work too hard in a short period of time you burn out. Calmness is the ultimate emotion, all other emotions decieve us to be biased towards one or the other causing us to make poor decisions but calmness is logical and correct.

Art is a journey that needs to be worked at just a little bit at a time. You have your entire life ahead of you to make it, there's no need to rush

>TL;DR
Don't fall into the hype, think clearly and do what must be done to succeed in a realistic way.
>>
>>2255403

what do you mean by this? art is not uniform, its expressive regardless of style, culture, or method the only thing it should always do is capture the beauty of the image, we practice only to keep our dexterity on handling the pencil, that's all it is to know
>>
>>2271532

Enjoy the work. You might not consciously realize it, but you've decided that the work is a chore. Exercise was terrible for me until I decided to appreciate what I was doing, and to savor all of the feelings that I thought were negative. Enjoy the process, have fun with it. Take little breaks here and there to doodle something fun, maybe after you finish a study, or when you lose focus.

The only way you can work too hard is if it starts to physically impact your health, your financial situation, or your relationships. All the psychological nonsense going on in your head telling you that you should stop studying when you don't need to stop, has to be dealt with.

Try to go over fundamentals everyday, for 15 minutes, then 30 minutes, then an hour. Always try to go up, if you can. Remember always try and apply what you've learn, this can usually be in the form of imagination drawing after an exercise to see how much you've recorded. You can improve rapidly by doing this.
