I think practice would be a better word to use, and Illustrator a better program (at least if you're talking about Adobe).
You needn't "study" to learn techniques, especially if you're an autodidact.

Indeed. AFAIK it's actually his concept art for the kingdom in Disney's "Tangled". I don't think the film did his painting justice.
