Anyone figured out how they "did" BB-8 without digital fx yet?
I mean, I could guess the head is affixed by electromagnets, but surely that would leave some nice scrape-marks on the body.
I could also guess the body is a gyroscopic ball, which would then allow the electromagnet at the top to hold the head on straight... except, the head is rarely on just plain vertically

Ball bearings are a wonderful thing. Also an armature inside containing the magnets would be useful for puppeteering just the head.
Once you see the prototypes of having the gimbal inside the first ball, everything else seems a bit easier to understand. So much so that it really did inspire a lot of people to try and make their own.

Easy:
Inside the sphere is a weighted robot using omnidirectional/holonomic wheels (commonly found on forklifts). The movements of this weight cause the 'ball' to roll around in a controllable manner. All shots where things ;extend' from the ball use a hero ball that just has that component, and has no ability to move.
The 'head' is effectivley an entirely seperate robot. It has it's own powered wheels that move it on top of the ball. When moving forward it automatically balances on the ball, but for stationary shots the weighted robot in the ball is sufficient to keep the ball stationary while the 'head' moves about on top, allowing BB8 to 'look around'.
