405'th plane off the production line and made in the year 1988. Must be a block 40. These babies only cost 28 million dollars, fully loaded. We could buy 9 or 10 of these for the price of one F-22.

so should the A-10 be kept over the F-35? I know a bunch of people are arguing that (such as war is boring, god that is a shit blog), and the arguments seem somewhat convincing, however I don't know much about aircraft to really argue one way or the other

Welcome fellow J-fag. Very nice pic.
>>2507395
Pretty loaded question. You'd have to 1) look at the cost to maintain and even upgrade a fleet that has been around since the 80's vs. purchasing a new fleet of technologically advanced aircraft and 2) what are our current needs. 2 is a bit more difficult because it is hard to predict the future. The A-10 is fantastic at air to ground destruction and covering troops, which is what we are currently involved in with schwacking small terrorist groups at a time. The F-35 would be a fantastic air to air deterrent , which will be required if Russia or any of the other hot heads decide to do something stupid. Itd be a waste of money to use the F-35 in single strikes. I advocate for maintaining the A-10 honestly but see the importance in a powerful fighter like the 35.
>>2509700
I'm on the side of the argument that the F-35 is an overpriced turkey and in the event that a country like Russia starts a war it's not going to hold it's own against Russia's air force.
The A-10C is already an upgraded variant of the A-10A from the 70's, and the A-10C upgrade happened in 2005 so they're still very much up to date aircraft. Also consider Russia copied Northrop's model in the A-X competition and made their own Su-25 Frogfoot with the design, which makes it a very close cousin to the Warthog. Just goes to show how valuable a dedicated attack aircraft can be. My money's on the US keeping it.

>>2506731
That price is decades old. Iraq paid well over 100 million each for their downgraded block 52 jets. That includes maintenance, spares, and some weapons, but that's still lots of money. The F-16E's sold to UAE where somewhere around 70-80 million each.
A F-22 can shot down F-16's without the F-16's knowing what the fuck happened.

Straight up aerial combat. Fighter vs fighter. Which plane is best in the world now?
I'm asking because I was checking the planes out.
Britain is relying on the Panavia Tornado introduced in 1979.
America isn't doing much better
It's still using the F15e ( 1988) F15C (1976) F16 (1978). The F22(2005) is awesome on paper but people say it's awful in reality.

I'm guessing it's F22 raptor, then Eurofighter, then Mig35. If russia wanted to start shit the f22 would be used to gain air supremacy and then tactical strikers/bombers would clean up? Is air supremacy basically best plane wins most of the time or could a well managed, larger fleet of older aircraft win out?

F22
The F-15 is flawless in dogfights and something like 160-0
in combat sims the F-22 can go 1-5 and come out alone without the F-15s ever knowing where the F-22 was

F-14 it's nothing dude. just the best naval fighter ever made.
>>2520967
>ignoring the fact BVR missiles can end a dogfight before it starts.
>>2522048
I think he means politically. They are fairly easy to shoot down by any decently armed enemy. They were hit so hard in the first Gulf War that they were removed from the front line and sent to secondary areas while F-16's did their job without a loss. A-10's are good against those without guided weapons.
>>2526244
When you enter a dogfight, any plane can win. In training today, F/A-18's are beat by A-4's and F-16's are beat by F-5's and even a F-22 can be beaten by an EA-18G. That doesn't mean the ancient planes are better, it means a good pilot can trick inexperienced pilots into playing their game.
The whole point of the F-22 and F-35 is not to enter dogfights. They decide when to fight because they have stealth and better situational awareness from their various systems.

(2nd last paragraph )
>Gruene said the Raptor excels at fighting from beyond visual range with its high speed and altitude, high-tech radar and long-range missiles. But in a slower, close tangle—what pilots call a “merge”—the heavier F-22 is at a disadvantage. “As soon as you get to the merge … the Typhoon doesn’t necessarily have to fear the F-22,” Gruene said.
Onboard video of a Rafale pilot shooting down an F22 in test fighting
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KOswfrc7Xtg
so as an air dominance plane ( assuming equal pilots ) the f-22 is best so long as it can fight at long range?
>>2528576
The whole point is to fight at long range or with some other superiority. That's why soldiers fight with rifles instead of knives. What kind of moron gives their enemy a fair fight? A Rafael will never even get to the merge unless a Raptor wills it.
Rafale's don't even have one of these. India wants to install an Israeli helmet mounted display system in the Rafale's they want to buy, but France won't let them.

Here's the reason why western aircraft are so formidable in air-to-air combat, not individual performance. Western pilots have better information, and are put in better positions for interception. This will get even better with the F-35, which has a crazy level of intelligence gathering and interpreting.
>>2507044
hugeeeeeee disappointment. I can't believe how much money was sunk into these for them to suck as much as they do.
>>2529618
>2) F-35A/C
HEEEHHEHHEHHEE
>>2530425
Developing the next generation of fighting takes time and money. We know that stealth is good. We know that helmet mounted displays are good. We know that sharing data between aircraft is good. We know that electronic warfare is good. A fighter of the future needs to do these things, and better than existing aircraft do.
>>2530836
>We know that stealth is good
Sorry grandpa, stealth is dated.
>>2532250
WTF? Stealth is awesome. If Russia or China had some magical stealth-detecting system and thought it was crap, why are they both designing stealth aircraft? And stealth drones? And stealth ships?
You are always better off with stealth than not.

>>2506398
Won't happen. Boeing has just told Canada that the F/A-18 production line will be shut down before the new competition takes place. Trudeau will have to chose the F-35, F-15E, or something European. If it it the Rafale, then every bomb and missile in Canada's current inventory will need to be replaced. If it's the Eurofighter, then most of the bombs will have to be.
And if they really don't buy the F-35 they will have to give up all the production contracts and technology sharing. That means lots of money and jobs lost.
>>2532260
Agreed. No point or reason in giving your position up to the wrong people.
>>2530425
Keep something in mind about their suckage. These planes are made for export, and we need something good enough to blow them out of the sky that we keep for ourselves.

Chiliean Air Force rare EB-707 Condor AEW
EL/M-2075 Phalcon is an Airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) active electronically scanned array radar system developed by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) and Elta Electronics Industries of Israel. Its primary objective is to provide intelligence to maintain air superiority and conduct surveillance. The Federation of American Scientists stated that the Phalcon was the most advanced AEW&C system in their 1999 article.[1] It was surpassed by newer versions - the EL/W-2085 and the EL/W-2090.
>>2535281
When they were making the F-117 they had a more primitive ideas of how to deflect radio waves. The B-2 and F-22 are based on more advanced ideas. The F-35 is better still - just about as stealthy, but soooo much less maintenance to keep it up. Those earlier planes needed putty and tape applied all the time.
There was talk about installing the F-35 coating on F-22's. I don't know if they are still planning on doing that.

>>2530425
Your view is ignorant.
Yes, they cost too much. This has as much to do with how government procurement works as inherent development costs or 'greedy contractors'.
The F-35 is the first true 5th generation fighter - meaning that it is part of an overall system. F-22, though it has superior flight characteristics, is at best a 4.5G fighter. No other country is really very close to this capability.
Drones do seem to be the future though.
>>2543508
Its ability to deliver on basics is outperformed by aircraft from the '60s, and relies on being super complex and "secret classified stuff" to remain competitive, but the Chinese hacked and stole the dev data already, and the more complex a system is, the easier it is to bring down.
Also, look up the conditions under which Lockheed boast that it's safe to eject while wearing an F-35 pilot helmet, and look up the conditions Sukhoi boast about being the minimum acceptable.
Healthy at every size.
>>2543935
>Its ability to deliver on basics is outperformed
> by aircraft from the '60s
Like how a F-14 couldn't out-turn a A-4 or out accelerate a F-5. But in a war situation the latter two would be spanked by the turkey.
In modern war Russian aircraft are always spanked because we have the more capable systems. Wars are not won by turning tighter, they are won by knowing more and making sure the enemy knows less. The F-35 is the ultimate expression of knowing more and making sure the enemy knows less. It's a good thing the Russians can eject in all situations because they will do more of it if a fight breaks out.
