This helmet (plus the replica) is perhaps one of the most amazing archaeological finds of all time. I cannot express how amazingly bad ass this thing is, it's like one of the greatest examples of Saxon/Anglo-Saxon/post-Roman Germanic culture we have.

The Kavacha, or combined armour of chainmail and plate was worn by noblemen horse riders to protect the torso and arms.
This piece is built in steel and features both a chainmail tunic and lamella plates in the torso and back areas. With long sleeves and coming down to the knee, it is remarkably well preserved, with no tears or mending.
The armour displays two engraved inscriptions – one, in the outside part of the top right plate, and another, on the inside, in Hindi and Indo-Aryan script, and in devanagari Persian writing, revealing that it was captured in 1689, in the spoils resulting from the Adoni siege in the Deccan, where the famous battle between the Mughal army and the Deccan Sultans took place.
This Kavacha was part of the group of arms which made up the arsenal of the Bikaner fort, capital of the Adilshahi dynasty, which was captured by one of the generals of the Aurangzeb (r.1659-1707), the Maharajah of Binaker - Anup Singh – when he defeated the last descendent of the Adilshahi dynasty of Jaipur.
Anup Singh (1669-1698) was the oldest son of the Karn Singh Rajah (1631-1669), the house chief of the Aurangzeb Emperor.
The very high quality of the manufacture of this armour shows that this was a piece worn by a high dignitary.
The manufacture of this sort of chainmail tunics, which belonged to the arsenal of the Bikaner fort, was traditionally associated to the city of Jaipur, in the Deccan.

Mail shirts reinforced with steel or iron plates appear to have been developed first in Iran or Anatolia in the late fourteenth or early fifteenth century. Variations of mail-and-plate armor were worn subsequently throughout the Middle East by the Persians, Ottomans, and Mamluks. The style probably was introduced into India early in the Mughal period due to Ottoman influence on Mughal military practices.
The armor is part of a large group of material that comes from the armory of the maharajas of Bikaner in Rajastan, northern India. An inscription inside one of the plates gives the name of Maharaja Anup Singh (reigned 1669–98) and the date samvat 1774 (A.D. 1691). Anup Singh was a general in the armies of the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb and led a series of campaigns in the Deccan in the 1680s and 1690s, including battles at Golconda in 1687 and Adoni in 1689. The date on the armor indicates that it must have been taken as booty during one of the Deccan campaigns.

This shirt ranks as one of the most beautiful surviving Mughal armors and is among the earliest dated examples. You can pierce armour with a spear, but it depends how much force there is behind the strike, the angle of the strike to the armour, how sustained the strike is (just a stab, or sustained force?), even whether the armour is damaged already, or is pristine. The exact location of the strike is also important as some areas have more metal behind them, or are under more or less strain from the shape than other parts might be.
And if you think chain mail is padding, then you're sadly mistaken.

I can only speak for chain mail, but there have been a great number of modern weaves developed long after chain mail was last used. A lot of the new weaves sacrifice favorable aspect ratios (AR) for a denser, thicker weave. AR is the ratio of wire diameter to ring diameter. The smaller this number the stronger the ring, however the higher the number the more rings you can connect to it. The most common weave you'll see in this thread is called European 4 in 1 (E4-1) where each ring has four other rings connected to it. However Japanese 3 in 1 and 4 in 1 have also been historically used, as well as logical progressions of European such as 6 in 1. This is a picture of a modern weave called Unbalanced European 4 in 1. The advantages of this weave include all of the advantages of balanced E4-1 including efficient area coverage per ring, relatively lightweight, and easy to make. Its main unique advantage is that each individual ring is harder to isolate when attacked, spreading out the damage across all the rings in the area and effectively making it harder to break. Naturally battle-ready armor would be riveted or welded whereas this sample is not.

What the hell are you talking about? I was in the army only 10 years ago and full pack was 50kg, not even including anti armor armament such as mines and bazookas, which would weigh an additional 12 kg each.
In the nordics a standard "test" if you will involved biking and mostly marching 100-120 km within 24h with that gear. Standard, as in the most basic of soldiers were expected to make it.
50 kg is literally nothing if you get it properly distributed so much of the weight is on your hips, like proper gear does it. Granted, some 30kg of that is in a big backpack that can be dropped in times of combat, but still.
