Territory in itself isn't really any mark of the military skill of a society, especially if you limit it to the extant of land held.
However it is historically true that harsh territory tends to make a society more feriocius and thus create better warriors. The personal skill of the individual fighter is however no guarantee for sucess in war, as leadership, equipment and supplies are much more important determinators.
Basically, the size of the country doesn't really matter, as military competence and ability are the deciding factors in war, both of which have no real connection to the size of the states in question.

Pretty easy question really. I'm assuming you mean militarily:
If it's centralized and has a guaranteed source of tax revenue and a stable government.
If it has a disciplined and loyal army and loyal/well educated officers.
If it's fighting a defensive war that makes a huge difference too. Not only are soldiers more likely to fight harder but they're also fighting on home terrain and have defensive benefits.
If there's public support for the war.

Start Teutonic order, then re-start until Austria allies someone who you can rival, then rival that country (normally Poland or Bohemia). Use the mutual rivals relations boost to ally Austria, boost your relations to +159 and add Koenigsberg to the the >H>R>E to join. Congrats, you now have a friend who is big enough to stop Poland from raping you to death, the world's your Oyester now, either use Austria as a meat hammer against Poland until you can eat them or casually burn your way through the HRE, once you get Prussian Speesss Mehrines you're unstoppable and Coalition wars turn into "I'm not trapped in here with you, you're trapped in here with me".
Harder but more rewarding way is to pick up easier allies closer to home (Bohemia, Bavaria, Pommeranida, Brandenburg, Livonian order, Riga, and outright win your first war against Poland-Lithuania (they will basically always war you as soon as you're able ~2 years in). Strat is basically to blob you're troops together with the biggest allied doomstack (normally Bohemia-Silesia's), win the first big battle hard and then aggressively pursue retreating forces. Take out loans, go over the force limit, you NEED to win this war, and you NEED to cripple Poland-Lithuania in the peace deal, make them release nations ideally.
