The Irish had a very defensible strategic position. The Norse wanted to humiliate the Irish general by defeating him on top of a mountain sacred to his ancestors. By the time they even reached the Irish line they were scattered by javelins and tired to the point of exhaustion
Máel Sechnaill was one of the best generals of the period. He's not mentioned as much in history as Brian Boru because he was at odds with the church, but he was an immensely capable leader
The Irish fighting force would've more or less entirely been well-trained and well-equipped noblemen, while the Viking army was mostly made up of Dublin townsfolk and Irish slaves, who weren't very enthusiastic about fighting their kinsmen. This isn't normal Norse tactics but this was essentially a fight for their survival in Ireland as a people so they threw everything they had at them.
The Irish were using better weapons at this stage, according to the annals, though you always have to take this with a grain of salt.
