Legitimately one of the greatest warlords in history.
Of course, Caesar was greater.

He arguably did more to change history (including the scores of libraries burned) than anyone else in Asia.
>>
Yes. He conquered vast lands but did so with very little lasting effect.

He was a great military leader, that's it.

He was also cosmopolitan. He admired Diogenes of Sinope, the first SJW NEET.
>>
>>991922
That's debatable. And his legacy is more negative then positive regardless.

Negative has nothing to do with greatness.
>>
>>991549
Not really. He was a random guy who conquered a shit load of land in a short period of time really quite easily and then he died. Thats what he's known and rated for, nothing more.
>>
>>993292
It has a part of it, which detracts from his "greatness". Face it, there will never ever be a universal precedent for how Genghis will be viewed.
>>
>>993336
No it doesn't.

>>993299
You could reduce anything to something that appears to be of low value.

"Hitler was just some random guy who ruled some random country and killed some people one time"

"Jesus was just some random guy who lead a small cult and got killed"

"Washington was just some random politician in america"

"Atilla was just some random guy who conquered some places and died"

"Julius Caesar was just some random statesman who invaded some places and wrote a book"

"Muhammed was just some random religious dude who died"

"Guatama Buddha was just some guy who sat by a tree and died"
>>

Not overrated so much as respected for the wrong reasons. He wasn't some kind of military savant or anything, it's just that Macedonian pikes make for a great anvil and Greek cavalry make for a good hammer. Alexander was one of history's great men and he attracted other impressive people to his cause as well as inspired his men with intense and unwavering loyalty - and THAT is why he was able to conquer Persia.
>>
>>991922
Sure, if you rate by influence genghis deserves to be rated to high heavens
If you rate by competence, overrated. The world was just ripe for his armies.
>>
>>993374

thats pretty much it tho, all the rest is history

>>
>>991573

I'd say he is a tad overrated. People give Genghis a lot of credit for stuff he didnt really do. He's a bit like Philip of Macedon in the sense he laid the ground work for the real conquests.

Ogedai is the real badass of the mongols.

Kek same faggot edited the article from Greek losses being "heavy" to "moderate"

Holy shit

While conquering Persia, he recommende his men to take Persian wives and unite the cultures forever.

That alone makes him based.

Imagine the glory of a Greco-Persian Empire. Imagine what could have been.
>>
>>995977
His attempts to impress Hellenistic culture on the Iranians pretty much died with him. Also Cyrus the Great did multiculturalism and tolerance a hell of a lot better then Alex did.
>>
>>991549
No. Really, no. Eurasia was permanently and massively changed by his actions.
>>
>>991549
When Alexander died, his successors fought for his corpse.
Ultimately it was put in a mausoleum in Alexandria. It survived the fall of Egypt to Romans, Arab conquest and likely Ottoman Empire taking over.

The last somewhat believable record of it being there comes from 1498 the last person who claimed to see his body saw it in 1611. So for almost two thousand years, he was considered to be great enough to have people maintaining his mausoleum.
Even more - almost half of that time was spent under muslim rule, and muslims generally don't like the idea of preserving remnants of older, pagan cultures, let alone remnants of pagan kings. They didn't just continued the preservation, they actively venerated his remnants.

Overrated or not, this was likely one of the most respected figures in known history along with Cyrus the Great

>His attempts to impress Hellenistic culture on the Iranians pretty much died with him.
That's the tragedy. If Alexander hadn't died so soon, history could be quite different.

>Also Cyrus the Great did multiculturalism and tolerance a hell of a lot better then Alex did.
He was inspired by Cyrus and met an untimely death, I'm frankly not surprised that his legacy in that regard doesn't quite live up to Cyrus's.
>>
>>997594
>He was inspired by Cyrus
I know.
>and met an untimely death
So did Cyrus. In fact we know Cyrus spent most of his life fighting his enemies, expanding his new empire's boarders, and building new towns and cities but he never really had the same sort of "peace" that Darius had to really govern but he still managed to do a lot in his time span.

But still, I'm not sure even if Alex didn't die young he would been Cyrus' match in that regards. Who knows, its all speculation really at this point.
>>
>>996055
>His attempts to impress Hellenistic culture on the Iranians pretty much died with him.

Thats not true. Parthians were heavily influenced by Hellenism for a couple of centuries.
>>
>>997737
At the very least, a merging of Greek and Persian culture could be expected.

I don't know how that would have affected Rome though.
>>
>>997740
No they weren't. By the middle of their reign, they removed Greek as a court language and started returning to Zoroastrianism and native Iranian religions. The main reason for the rise of the Sassanids was due to their ability to slander the Arsacids as being "Aryan traitors" for their forays with Greek religion and culture which the Arsacids never shook off even though they themselves removed Hellenism from Iran by then.

Also even "hugely" might be an exaggeration.
>>
>>997945

Thats still ~300 years after Alexanders death.
>>
>>998234
And it was just limited to the Arsacids and a few of the Parthian Royal Clans~
