>Still recovering from being absolutely obliterated in WWII
>Indochina literally on the opposite side of the world
>Enemy used fairly unconventional warfare
>Even America got its ass handed to it
>"France losing Indochina was pathetic! France sucks!"
Look at the circumstances, anon
Okay, Pierre. Hope you feel better now.

France generally doesn't get shit on for losing in Indochina. That's America's job. Now surrendering to Germany on the other hand...
>mfw a bunch of pathetic little Maoist peasants were able to beat two western super powers
>America got its ass handed to it
No it didn't. It kicked the shit out of the NVA and Vietcong at an incredibly disproportionate rate.
>>989988
and still lost
Should have just went the British way and gave them Independence in return for trade agreements.
France fucked up hard.
They went into a lot of battles with no fire support. They should the locals wouldn't have heavy weapons of their own or be organized.
The real tragedy is the US getting involved. We knew well ahead of time that Vietnam was going to be a shit show. The OSS(precursor to the CIA) worked with Ho Chi Minh during ww2. Minh told them that he was going lead a fight against foreigners until they left. the OSS agents believed it too.
>>989997
No doubt, but saying it got its ass handed to it is just plain wrong. By every conceivable measure the North Vietnamese got their asses handed to them by everyone involved except the South Vietnamese. Even the French beat them to shit for a time until they stopped sending reinforcements and refused to evacuate the remaining forces. They had them fight a battle they were expected to lose because high command considered it preferable to giving up without a fight.
>>990012
KDR is the measure by which ass handing is measured, yes.
>>986875
>Even America got its ass handed to it
Except we didn't "get our ass handed" to us. Quite the opposite, but c'est la vie. Whatever helps you sleep at night, frog.
>>989988
the real mistake was leaving the South Vietnamese high and dry after Nixon got the boot.
the NVA got decimated after the Tet offensive, and the bombing campaign against the north sure wasn't helping.
>>990220
The real mistake was getting involved in a war that could only be won by treating North Vietnam like Nazi Germany when instead they tried to treat it like a game of tower defense.
The ONLY way the North would have stopped fighting is if they all died or were removed from power by force. Full on invasion or full on genocide, probably both.
We should have backed Ho when we had the chance to, instead of all but ignoring them. He wasn't a Communist, he went to them because they cut him a deal to get his country back together. Communism died in Vietnam shortly after reunification anyhow, none of the leaders had any love for it, and the ones that did didn't live or keep power for too long.
>>990220
The Democrats got control of Congress in the Mid Term election, thanks to Watergate. Then in an act of petty politics. They cut all support to the South, to spite Nixon and Ford. Even though treaties said we would continue with material aid.
>US lost in Vietnam
>b-b-but muh KDR!
If it mattered the history books would have said differently.

Losing after 20 years as a superpower in a war that almost crashed the nation fits the description of "getting its ass handed to them"
>>990401
>almost crashed the nation
Lolwut
The casualties suffered were extremely minimal especially since it was over a 10 year period and it had absolutely no impact of the economy. If anything, it helped the MIC back at home stay strong and healthy and is a contributing factor to US military dominance today. Wild Weasel units were bred in Vietnam and the lessons and techniques learned there made Iraq an absolute cakewalk.
The US came out of the Vietnam war a lot stronger than when it left. A bunch of whiny college kids who pretty much shut up by the end of the war since they were given everything they demanded even unto peace did not almost tear the nation apart.
Watergate was a bigger impact to stability than Vietnam ever was.

USA did not have a fuck up as big as Dien Bien Phu.
If anyone on this board actually studied Realist International Relations they'd realise why both the French and the US were beneficial in leaving Indochina.
Seeing that everyone on this board has a hard on for complete and utter "glorious" victories militarily, no one will ever understand why they took the choice to leave.
>>990609
>took the choice to leave
You make it sound like they had a whole lot of choice
>>990609
>>990614
The French had little choice as it was really unable to fight the insurgency well, and certainly unable to sustain the troops needed to fight a full fledged war.
For the US, it was held by the balls by its own politicians, and then by the US public, and never allowed to achieve a win condition. The US certainly had the ability to stay, but the political climate would not have allowed further involvement.
>>990614
The US could have kept waging war had they truly wanted to. France not so much.
In Dine Bien Phu, we lose! In Algeria, we lose! In Indochina, we lose. But here, we don't lose! This piece of earth, we keep it! We will never lose it! Never!
>>986875
Oh I think France made a great call in not going to war over it. It's just not worth it.

Well that explains it
Both amerifats and frogs got their ass handed to them in Vietnam
By excusing them, you try to find excuse for yourself too
>>986875
Unlike America, France's failure in Indochina was on the military aspect
Their military hadnt recovered from WW2 yet and gravely underestimated the Vietminh
A war that would be comparable to America's Vietnam War for France is the Algerian War
They absolutly rekt the shit out of the FLN militarily speaking, but they still gave up Algeria for political reasons (war unpopular at home, pressure by the US to end colonization...)
