I considered posting this go /k/, but they seem to be mostly concerned with firearms and modern knives.
I'm curious to know what some of your favorite historical weapons are, /his/.
Preferably not firearms, though early firearms are fine. And I'm interested in specific types of weapons and not just "sword" or "spear".
For instance, while my favorite historical weapon is probably either the couched cavalry lance or perhaps a partisan, I also really like cool and interesting version of the various clubs and maces that are prevalent throughout history.
For instance, does anyone know if kanabo were ever actually used widely in combat in Japanese history? I've always heard that the most common weapons used by samurai and peasants alike were spears like the yari and simple bo staffs or the yumi bow. The katana (and wakizashi, as a daisho pair) I've heard were mostly backup weapons for samurai during battles or sometimes for self-defense when going about their daily business. But does anyone know how common the use of the kanabo or any other types of blunt weapons like clubs and maces were in pre-modern Japan?

There's not a lot of informations about such weapons and almost no ryu-ha teach them (and those who pretend to do are a bit obscure). It seems to have been some thing of an exotic weapon, it's talked about because it's weird and all, but overall, nobody used them regularly.
Kanabo and others typically weight 10 pounds or so, it's really much more than needed, even for a large two-hander, practical long swords never weight that much.
Besides, the use of a blunt pole weapon in Japan isn't as big as in Europe, where there is a big tradition of poleaxes. The japanese armor typically was still open enough for sword and glaive cuts or spears thrusts, so the reliance on big blunt weapons didn't really catch on. If needed, you just had a bigger rokushakubo and that's it.
Mallet and the likes were used sometimes, just like in Europe, when you had to make brief fortifications or during sieges, since a big two-handed hammer, as unwieldy as it is, will still fuck you up big time if it connects.

Greek fire. Was there recorded terrestrial use? Flooding a battlefield then lighting it up?
>>982902
Not exactly this greek fire but a proto flamethrower was used during the Delian siege in the Peloponnesian war (iirc), according to Thucydides.
Probably a kopis/falcata. It's basically an inbetween a sword and an axe. Also I like the shape of it.

Flawless weapon

Consider also that weapons like the tesubo were probably more popular before 1450 before the formation of most ryu.

> It's basically an inbetween a sword and an axe.
no, its not. None of these "its like an axe" idiotic claims are true. Falchions are not "like axes". Falcata are not "like axes. not even Khopesh are "like axes"
you know what's like axes? Axes.
Here's the cross-section of falcata, showing that they include extremely thin, or very complex-fullered blade cross-sections which remove much of the mass, so they are light, thin cutters.
I always found kamas quite good in sparring sessions against most other people

Did always want to learn the tinbe rochin too though, looks like it has really quite interesting techniques
>>983026
Armor was less covering and less developed why would they be more popular ? I'm not saying it ain't true, but it ain't so convincing.

I think they are like axes in the sense that you chop with them rather than slice or cut as you would with regular swords.

Care to explain the difference?
>>983674
because the introduction of massed formations of pike men radically changed the nature of Japanese warfare.
where as before warriors preferred huge weapons that could be used to smash as well as cut, weapons that allowed you to fight in a tight melee became more popular, even the naginata was a niche weapon by the end of the warring states.
Do you think I'm maybe compensating for something ?

Only issue is you can't get any equipment over here, you either use kendo armor (which doesn't really work that well) or you import armor from Japan and pay a hefty import tax.

I like the Seax.
I also find it amusing that the broken-back seax was more-or-less reinvented 1200 years later by another Englishman looking for a better way to gut someone.
