Are there any fortresses that have never been taken? Or at least went uncaptured for a period longer than Constantinople (874 years in sea attack, 1123 to actually break through the walls)?
>>
I'm guessing that to qualify, the fortress needs to have been attacked at least semi-regularly over its history? Also, does starving out the defenders count?

This one :^)

Not talking in specific attacks, like the Siege of Candia, but in the whole history of the fort. And anything goes, so long as it got the attackers outside inside in the end.

Konigstein, at least as far as I'm aware, never fell - although a few battles happened outside of it, I'm not sure if it was ever directly attacked. Would have been a bitch to take though, had a water bore in the middle of it, and even had one of the largest wine barrels in the world built into it (capacity of something like 250 000 litres).

Well equipped to maintain morale during a long siege, certainly.

Wouldn't this count?

>>

Malta itself wasn't taken by the french, rather the french Garrison was besieged by the Maltese themselves.
So no, it doesn't count
>>
>>968332
That'd be fun, attackers outside guys, let's see if we can finish this barrel before they get in
>>
>>968385
Wouldn't the French capture of Malta in the first place count then?
>>

Paris has a pretty good track record.

Sacked by vikings in 845 and taken by the Burgundians around 1415 although I am not sure if that was a siege and after that not successfully taken again until 1814.

At the end of XVIIth century, fucking Savoyards were devastating the High Provence. So the king sent Super Vauban fortifying the Alps. He did so well that the forts have never been attacked. So well that the life in this fort was maybe the most boring of the kingdom and so the place detains the record of desertion rates. So boring that during the Revolution, the foreign prisoners there prefered to enlist in the French army.

Japan.

200 BC - 1945 AD

The last known conquerers were the Wu refugees who established the Yamato kingdom.

The Koreans who brought alot of bronze/iron were settlers, and after around 500 AD, refugees from Baekje.

It wasn't really a siege, the Knights of St John were mostly French themselves and the Knights decided not to contest the occupation
>>
>>968285
I don't know if it count since it's not really a fortress, but Venice was never taken until Napoopan arrived, so that's 11 centuries. You could actually argue that Napoopan didn't actually conquer the city, even tho the nation surrendered to him, and the same goes for the austrians with Manin's repuvblic, so arguably the city is still untaken.
>>

But all the fortresses in Japan were regularly being taken, burnt and rebuilt for much of that period.

>Japan
Nobody fucking wanted to conquer Japan, you git. It's right up there with "Conquering Scandinavia for Land." = a useless exercise.

The only time people bothered was
1) A Mongol Khan felt insulted by its existence. Since Insult to Khan = Insult to State, he attacked it.
2) America pretty much attacked it since it attacked first. Didn't even have to set foot on the place to conquer it.

As he arrived, Perry ordered his ships to steam past Japanese lines towards the capital of Edo, and position their guns towards the town of Uraga.[10] He also fired blank shots from his 73 cannons, which he claimed was in celebration of the American Independence Day. Perry's ships were equipped with new Paixhans shell guns, cannons capable of wreaking great explosive destruction with every shell.[11][12]

Perry began a campaign of intimidation, by sending boats to survey the surrounding area, and threatened to use force if the Japanese guard boats around the American squadron did not disperse.[10] He also presented the Japanese with a white flag and a letter which told them that in case they chose to combat, the Americans would necessarily vanquish them.[13][14]

Perry went ashore with considerable pomp, landing with 250 sailors and Marines in 15 ships’s boats after a 13-gun salute from Susquehanna. Major Zuilin’s Marines presented arms, and a band played Hail Columbia. Perry's squadron eventually departed Tokyo Bay on 17 July for the Chinese coast, promising to return for a reply.[16]
