Why is it said that Machiavelli created the modern world?
He had sex with prostitutes and then puked on them.
>>961371
That one was particularly ugly though and he was drunk iirc.
Because those people have a very basic view of the world.
>>961378
Doesn't change the fact that he did do it though does it?
>>961398
No, but context is important.
>>961521
the context to puking on a prostitute matters?
>>961331
Because it's his name attached to the idea of politicians fucking each other over for personal gain.
>>961537
Yes. Extremely. Puking after a night of high rolling in Vegas on a few 10k/night call girls is way different than puking on a weathered old shrew after a night of heavy drinking.
>>961371
thanks this answered it
no one says that
Before Machiavilli it was expected that a politician should "do the right thing" even if it doesn't necessarily lead to the state's growth. He also pushed the idea that the masses are idiots who have no memory of events older than 2 years old.
Now they can lie, cheat, and steal if it's good for the country. He's basically the god-father of modern politics.
>>961821
>it was expected that a politician should "do the right thing"
Christ, that's surprising.
>>961843
Yeah, before him princes' education was being told that if they were good Christians and acted as such that God would simply make things go smoothly. Machiavelli basically just pointed out that things don't actually work like that.
>>961875
Yeah he basically said God doesn't intervene in politics. He even says the real reason Moses succeeded was he had good leadership skills, not because of the constant miracles.
People literally assumed that if they were were "good Christians" than God would just make their state prosper. Machiavelli said the only way it's going to happen is by direct action and you are allowed to do "evil" things to accomplish it.
People like to type-cast him as someone saying you should "only be evil" but that's not what he wrote. Politics is neither good nor evil, you make try to do the winning move every turn regardless of the "morality" of it.
>>961909
So, he was the start of realpolitik?
It is mostly because people are idiots and love to make vapid statements and attributions to historical figures vaguely related to what they are saying.
>>961331
What is he holding in his left hand?
>>961910
Yes.
>>961947
pyramid head voodoo doll
>>961947
His pair of glovies.
>>961909
It's like the Confucian vs Legalist debate all over again.
>>961331
he applied the beliefs founded by the scientific revolution to politics
>>961992
Reading some Fukuyama?
>>961995
bait
I can't see how a satirical book could create the modern world but maybe the current state of politics with politicians seeming more and more like cartoon villains is not so far off

Find me one credible source that ever said that
