I'm confused. Can anyone describe Civil War history in detail?
I still don't understand why Virginia didn't reunite with West Virginia after the war.

Yes, Virginia was a confederate state.

Montgomery Alabama and later Richmond Virginia served as a temporary capitals during the war. The intention was they'd eventually set aside ten square miles somewhere to serve as a capital district like DC, but they lost the war and it didn't happen.

No, the Confederate government did that. They had their own central government complete with president and congress.

It's always funny that Oklahoma is considered "Union" when so many Indians owned slaves and the infighting of the Cherokee was so one-sided that the Union-supporting "Home Guard" were basically forced to operate out of Kansas.
I guess we don't like to think of our Native population as being slave owners who oppressed blacks or, later, black Buffalo Soldiers who played a major role in the "genocide" of the Indian Wars as oppressing Indians.

OP's map also excludes the confederate "Arizona Territory." Basically every area on the border of the two sides had a dual-history the history books might or might not acknowledge.

Virginia would rather have gone with the south than the north if their was a war. They voted against secession until Lincoln ordered an invasion of the south, that's when they switched.

well it wasn't a state so it never really seceded. Also the North only recognized the unofficial indian leaders who were loyal to the north.
