Oh man, if you want the full timeline, that's going to be quite a few separate and different volumes, starting with Rev. Neville Barker-Cryer's York Mysteries Reveled. Then maybe going on to Rev. George Oliver or similar before diversifying into specifics.
There's also Mackey's History of Freemasonry, but he's American and it's American focused.
Otherwise something simple like Jasper Ridley's The Freemasons will give you the gist.
You really have to start with the study of alchemy and the history of Hermes Trismigestus.
